Man United: Van Nistelrooy would thrive now

Last season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 24 goals for Manchester United in all competitions, their leading goal scorer by quite some distance.

This season so far? The 37-year-old has scored just once for the club as he continues to play an almost peripheral figure in Erik ten Hag’s new-look United team.

Following the 6-3 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City, the manager claimed he left Ronaldo on the bench “out of respect” and with his future uncertain amid a transfer request over the summer, the Old Trafford side badly need a goal scorer.

One of Sir Alex Ferguson’s finest ever United signings could certainly thrive under Ten Hag, and going back in time, would have been exactly what the club needs in the present day.

Ruud van Nistelrooy would shine

The Dutchman knew exactly where the goal was, his talents didn’t extend to that of Ronaldo’s but if the ball broke loose in the opposition penalty area, it was almost guaranteed that Van Nistelrooy would score.

The striker arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2001 for a British record fee of £19m, although injury had prevented him from joining the club a year earlier.

He soon made up for lost time, scoring an incredible 80 goals in his first two seasons, leading United to the Premier League title in 2002/03.

30 more goals followed during the next campaign, winning the FA Cup in the process, but his goal tally soon decreased, finishing on totals of 16 and 24 in his final two campaigns at the club.

The Dutchman broke Denis Law’s European goal record at United and scored 150 times in just 219 games under Ferguson, a truly remarkable record.

Defender and former teammate Rio Ferdinand claimed Van Nistelrooy was “the most devastating finisher I have ever played with” and his goal tally alone makes it hard to argue with him.

He couldn’t quite hit the same heights post-United, although winning two La Liga titles with Real Madrid proved, as Ronaldo did, that he could shine away from the Premier League.

Ten Hag would surely love his fellow countryman back leading his frontline and there is absolutely no doubt he could thrive in the top flight.

How many goals would he score? That is up for debate, but it would surely be more than the 24 Ronaldo scored last year and the measly one that he’s managed so far this term.

He would have been perfect for what United are trying to build now.

Spurs can secure Eriksen heir in Maddison

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has provided his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s reported interest in Leicester City ace James Maddison, following the Englishman’s sparkling early-season form.

What’s the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider suggested that the 25-year-old could well prove to be a potential successor to former Spurs star Christian Eriksen, with the latter man having left north London back in January 2020 to join Inter Milan.

Amid reports that the Foxes playmaker could be a target for the Lilywhites, O’Rourke stated:

“His stats and numbers for Leicester this season have been superb as well. So, I think he could possibly go in and fill those boots of Christian Eriksen that Spurs have lacked since his departure.”

The former Norwich City man faces an uncertain future at the King Power Stadium with his existing deal set to expire in 2024, having also been the subject of interest from Newcastle United over the summer, with the Magpies reportedly seeing a £50m bid rejected.

Eriksen heir

Signing a new creative midfielder had seemingly been on the agenda for Spurs sporting director Fabio Paratici over the summer, with there having even been reports that the club were keen on bringing that man Eriksen back to the club on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old genius – who has since joined Manchester United in the recent window – had enjoyed a successful stint in the capital prior to his move to Italy just over two years ago, scoring 69 goals and providing 90 assists in 305 games in all competitions after signing from Ajax in 2013.

The Denmark international had been a key figure for the club during Mauricio Pochettino’s time at the helm, before going on to enjoy success at the San Siro under Conte, helping the serial winning coach to the Serie A title during the 2020/21 campaign.

The 117-cap gem’s time with the former Chelsea boss had seen him operate in a creative role in a 3-5-2 formation, with there no doubt a void in the current Tottenham squad for a playmaking asset to take on that berth – a problem which Maddison could well be a solution to.

The versatile sensation – who can operate on the flanks, in a number ten role or in central midfield – has lit up the Premier League in the early weeks of the season for Brendan Rodgers’ side, scoring five goals and laying on two assists in just eight top-flight games thus far to emerge as something of a “talisman” for the Midlands outfit, as described by journalist Rob Tanner.

Like Eriksen – who has been lauded for “amazing quality” on the ball by Red Devils legend Bryan Robson – Maddison has routinely been praised for his set-piece delivery, having been described as “world-class” in that regard by Three Lions boss, Gareth Southgate.

While there may well be a scramble for his signature moving forward, the £110k-per-week man would seemingly be an ideal addition for Conte and co, particularly as Spurs look to fill that Eriksen-sized void in the side.

Newcastle have £200m deal on the cards

The Premier League’s fair value committee will likely limit Newcastle United pumping money into the club, but a new stadium naming rights deal could still end up totalling £20m a year.

The Lowdown: Stadium talks…

As per The i Paper, Magpies CEO Darren Eales recently revealed the north-east outfit intend to utilise the companies linked to their Saudi-backed owners as a means of expanding their commercial revenue.

Furthermore, Eales also suggested the Magpies are considering the possibility of a naming-rights deal for St James’ Park, which would allow the club to boost income under financial fair play rules.

The CEO insisted supporters would be consulted over any potential naming rights deal, and Plumley has now shared the type of figures fans can expect to see.

The Latest: £200m deal?

Plumley believes that over the course of a ten-year agreement, Newcastle could earn in the region of £200m with a stadium naming-rights deal.

Speaking with Football Insider, the football finance expert claimed:

“I think this will come down to two things.

“Historically, we’re looking at deals that have been done before. The other thing is the background of the Premier League taking a closer look at deals and seeing if they constitute fair value. that links to the ownership at Newcastle, as we know.

“As a result of that, it won’t be outrageously high because they will have to play the game a little bit.

“The benchmark was the £40m-a-year City deal with Etihad. But if we look lower than that, some of the figures that are doing the rounds with Everton and Tottenham are around £20m.

“We know money is no object to them and if there were no regulations then a naming rights deal could be worth anything. But they have to fall in line with regulations.

“The other interesting thing is we have to look at the history of that stadium’s name. We know people refer to it as St James’ Park, whereas with Spurs and Everton, those are brand new stadiums. The naming rights become more attractive with new stadiums.

“So there is plenty to go off there, but I think around the £20m figure is what we’re looking at.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Mixed reaction…

While a £200m boost in income would allow the Tyneside club to improve their squad and facilities without breaching FFP, it is likely fans will not be super receptive to the naming rights deal.

St James’ Park has been the home of Newcastle United since Newcastle East End and West End FC formally merged in 1892.

Having kept the name ever since, the only time this was ever abandoned was when former owner Mike Ashley temporarily renamed the ground the Sports Direct Arena back in 2011.

However, with huge backlash coming from Toon fans, this decision was quickly reversed. As such, this may not be the best idea for PIF to explore, as supporters may change their currently positive opinion of the new owners.

Who Will Win the EPL 2022/23

Will Manchester City strike again and become Premier League champions in 2023? What are the chances of a revived Liverpool FC, which was just defeated in the preseason, regaining its form and winning the EPL?

With Erik ten Hag as the new coach, might Manchester United finish in the runner-up spot and surprise everyone like Chelsea, Tottenham, or the Gunners?

Let’s deep dive into the current EPL action and to bet on Premier League bookmakers, click here. But for now, let’s see who’s got the best odds this year.

Who Are the Premier League Favourites 2022/23?

The current Premier League winners are heavy favourites to repeat in this 2022-2023 season. Manchester City’s fortunes have significantly improved thanks to Erling Haaland and its famously successful coach, Pep Guardiola.

The Skyblues will return their primary attention to the Champions League after the 2021 and 2022 English championships. The Abu Dhabi franchises’ owners are still committed to bringing home the championship.

After their 2022 near miss, Liverpool FC immediately springs to mind. At the same time, the Big Six’s other four pursuers are receiving a lot of scrutiny. Is Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, or Tottenham the team that will ultimately win it all?

Will This Be Another Citizens Year?

The reigning champions, Manchester City, are heavy favourites. The Citizens had a tough time securing Erling Haaland, but he’s showing everyone that he’s the star player. Additionally, Kalvin Philipps, the powerhouse midfielder, is doing his magic.

Man City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, is aware of more playmakers in his squad, which has lowered the club’s prospects of losing the title. A proper number nine like Haaland has been elusive for the coach since Harry Kane left the team last year.

The rest of the squad is loaded with top-notch players from all around the world. Examples of players that deserve credit for their roles in the May 2022 title win are Ilkay Gündogan and Kevin de Bruyne.

Does Liverpool Still Stand a Chance?

In 2020 and 2021/22, the Reds continued to defend their crown. But within minutes, the Citizens had won the day. However, the Reds have shown that they are a worthy opponent.

They hope that an actual number 9 and the resulting tactical shift will help them recover from the devastating loss of Sadio Mané to FC Bayern. However, Mo Salah is now joined by Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan was brought in as a new striker, but other than that, virtually nothing was acquired from the transfer market. Maybe they already have the second-best Premier League title odds due to the quality of the players they have on hand.

After all, Virgil van Dijk, Thiago, Salah, and Robertson have all been at LFC for some time. If everyone performs at a high level on the field and Klopp’s squad avoids serious injuries, they can get back on track again and fire up to the top.

Will Chelsea Finally Win the League?

When it comes to Premier League futures, Chelsea is the undisputed favourite. Indeed, the 2021 Champions League winners are essentially the same as in 2020.

However, it appears that the club takeover has halted any activity on the transfer market. All of the clubs’ target players seem committed to other organizations.

Raheem Sterling’s transfer from Manchester City is showing some improvement in the Blues’ offense. However, most of us still doubt that Thomas Tuchel will be able to win the league with only that.

Can Man U Do Wonders?

Since 2013, Manchester United has been eagerly awaiting the return of the English Premier League.

Many other coaches attempted to replicate Ferguson’s achievement, but none were able to do so. Will Erik ten Hag’s leadership bring them success?

Lisandro Martínez is currently a valued member of the Ten Hag team. The Argentine will hopefully strengthen the Red Devils’ porous defense throughout the rest of the season. Ajax’s rivals, Feyenoord, also helped them obtain Tyrell Malacia.

Nonetheless, there are still plenty of mysteries about the establishment. Cristiano Ronaldo, United’s leading scorer, has reportedly expressed a desire to leave the club in January, which has caused some concern.

What the Underdogs Have to Say

The bookmakers provide similar championship odds for the underdogs in addition to the favorites.

Both North London teams are favorites to win the English Premier League. Although both Tottenham and Arsenal possess talented rosters, they have struggled to maintain a consistent level of play as of late.

And now that they have a legitimate striker in Gabriel Jesus, the Gunners are doing their best to remain at the top for as long as possible. But for now, we’ll settle for nothing less than a top-four finish. There is a lot of rivalry over this as well.

Thiago ruled out of Liverpool clash

Liverpool midfielder Thiago will miss the Reds’ important Champions League clash with Ajax through injury, as shared by James Pearce and Jurgen Klopp.

The Lowdown: Big game for Reds

The Reds are still reeling from last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, but focus now turns to European action.

Klopp’s men make the trip to Ajax on Wednesday evening knowing that a win or a draw will secure a place in the knockout stages early next year.

Injuries are continuing to plague Liverpool ahead of the game, however, and one big blow has come their way.

The Latest: Thiago ruled out

Taking to Twitter, Pearce said that Thiago wasn’t part of training on Tuesday – stating:

“Nunez and Konate in training at Kirkby but no sign of Thiago.”

Thereafter, Klopp then confirmed the Spaniard would miss tonight’s blockbuster clash in the Netherlands – sharing news he is ‘still out’.

The Verdict: Injury-prone figure

Thiago is a wonderful footballer, being hailed as ‘world-class’ by Gary Neville, but his injury record continues to leave a lot to be desired.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

Fitness issues have been a problem for the 31-year-old throughout his career and there is little chance of that changing at this point in his footballing life.

Thiago’s constant frustrating absences further highlight the need for midfield reinforcements in January and next summer, with too many current players incapable of staying fit for long periods.

Eckersley consolidates after Ingram ton

An unbeaten 70 from Ned Eckersley means Leicestershire’s acting captain could have a difficult decision to make regarding a declaration against Glamorgan

An unbeaten 70 from Ned Eckersley, his third half-century in his last four innings, means Leicestershire’s acting captain could have a difficult decision to make on the fourth day of the Championship match against Glamorgan at the Fischer County Ground.Eckersley’s unbroken partnership of 91 in 19 overs with Mark Pettini for the fourth wicket in Leicestershire’s second innings helped his side close day three leading the visitors by 194, with seven wickets remaining. It is a strong position, but the pitch is flat, the outfield fast, and with Zak Chappell, a key member of his bowling attack, unable to bowl after being hit on the right shoulder while batting in the nets before the start of the second day, Eckersley will have much to ponder should it come to setting a target.Even so, it was an impressively positive response from Leicestershire after Colin Ingram had become the second centurion of Glamorgan’s first innings. The South African was slightly fortunate to survive a caught-and-bowled opportunity given to Charlie Shreck on 92, but reached his century, from 178 balls, by hooking a Neil Dexter delivery to the midwicket boundary. It looked as though Glamorgan would go on to build a substantial first-innings lead, but they lost their last five wickets for just 42 runs, beginning with Ingram’s dismissal for 137 – his best for Glamorgan – bowled off an inside edge by Clint McKay in the over before lunch.McKay removed Kiran Carlson immediately after the break, Harry Dearden holding a fine catch at second slip, as he did when Marchant De Lange edged the same bowler soon afterwards. Lukas Carey’s attempt to hook Raine gave Dexter the simplest of catches at third slip, the ball looping off the back of the bat, and Dexter was again the grateful catcher when Michael Hogan chipped Raine gently in to the covers.Leicestershire did lose opener Dearden early, smartly caught by Nick Selman low to his right at second slip when the opener edged an attempted drive at Hogan.Dexter was run out after a poor call from Paul Horton, and Horton himself leg before wicket to a de Lange yorker that knocked the batsman off his feet, but Eckersley – dropped by David Lloyd on 48 – and Pettini scored quickly in the final hour.

Rangers: Morelos was "off the pace" again

Glasgow Rangers continued their miserable return to life in the Champions League having slipped to a fifth successive group stage defeat on Wednesday, suffering a 3-0 loss at the hands of a rampant Napoli side away in Italy.

Up against a side who had enjoyed an 11-game winning run heading into that clash, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men were simply unable to live with their imperious hosts as the Serie A side surged to a two-goal lead inside the opening 16 minutes, courtesy of a clinical Giovanni Simeone double.

Staring down the barrel of another European mauling – having only recently shipped seven away to Liverpool at Anfield – the Gers managed to avoid further embarrassment to keep the scoreline respectable, with a late Leo Ostigard header the only further goal for the home side.

While the Ibrox outfit can take heart from their second half showing up against a team who appear almost impossible to live with at present, there will likely be concern at the continued woes of a number of the Gers’ stars, with Alfredo Morelos, in particular, once again failing to deliver.

The Colombian international has so often been a deadly presence for the Old Firm giants over the years – with 114 goals in 238 games for the club to date – although is currently enjoying a miserable run at present, with just two goals to his name this season.

Having made his return from the injury which curtailed his 2021/22 campaign, the 26-year-old has since been unable to recapture his previously lethal form, with doubts still lingering over his long-term future at the club as his current deal ebbs towards its expiry.

So often the man to produce the goods on the European stage during his time with the Glasgow side – with 15 goals in 33 Europa League games – the 11-cap dud now looks a shadow over his former self, with journalist Graham Spiers describing him as a “pub amateur” following yesterday’s limp showing.

The centre-forward brute looked distinctly “off the pace” against Luciano Spalletti’s side, according to club legend Ally McCoist, having notably spurned a guilt-edged chance just before the break after producing a tame attempt at goal on the counter.

The £11.7m-rated man did then go close on the hour mark with an acrobatic volley, although then inexplicably failed to convert Ridvan Yilmaz’s delightful pull-back just moments later, with that blunder seemingly epitomising the marksman’s struggles at present.

That grim night saw the polarising forward record just 28 touches from his 68-minute outing – fewer than teammate Allan McGregor (32) – having also been somewhat wasteful with his limited involvement after losing possession nine times on the day, while making just 13 passes.

On the evidence of that display, it is no surprise that Van Bronckhorst’s side having only scored once in the competition thus far, while that man Morelos is beginning to tarnish his previous cult hero status.

Liverpool struck gold on Neco Williams

Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards’ diligence in the transfer market has arguably been the club’s biggest strength since he joined Liverpool.

Signing players such as Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz for transfer fees that have since looked like incredible value is something the German is keen to repeat as he chases more glory.

His ability to get fees for underperforming or underused players should also not be ignored, with Dejan Lovren, Harry Wilson, and Takumi Minamino all being excellent examples.

However, selling Neco Williams this summer for a fee of £16m to Nottingham Forest, especially considering the lack of game time he would have received this season, has been a masterstroke by Klopp.

Klopp robbed Forest

Williams did make 33 appearances for Liverpool after emerging from the youth system but it was unlikely he was going to overtake Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back position.

He was even dubbed “out of his depth” by athlete Ryan Crouch and with Calvin Ramsey arriving at the club in the summer to provide competition for Alexander-Arnold, the German moved him on to Forest and it has turned out to be a wise move.

The 21-year-old has played in 13 Premier League matches this season, averaging a SofaScore rating of 6.85. It’s a solid if unspectacular rating but alongside the rest of the Forest side, he has again looked out of his depth at times.

The club have kept just two clean sheets while he has featured and the defender has been dribbled past on average 1.1 times per match.

Losing possession 16.5 times per match ranks him second in the Forest squad, and while he does have some solid stats such as making 0.8 key passes (second in the squad) he hasn’t quite lived up to last season’s performances for Fulham.

Indeed, the Wales international scored twice and registered five assists while on loan with the Cottagers.

Granted these numbers were in the Championship, but with his talent, Williams should have been able to make the transition with more confidence.

The full-back is still young and has time to continue his development, but by receiving £16m for the player in the summer, Klopp has performed an excellent piece of business.

Journo stunned by WBA World Cup omission

Journalist Elias Burke has been left stunned by West Bromwich Albion midfielder Tom Rogic’s omission from Australia’s squad for the 2022 World Cup.

The Lowdown: Rogic left out of Australia squad

The tournament in Qatar is almost upon us, with the Baggies hosting Stoke City in their last Championship game before the mid-season break on Saturday afternoon.

On Tuesday, Australia confirmed their squad for the World Cup, but there was no place in it for West Brom midfielder Rogic, which arguably comes as a surprise.

The 29-year-old has won 53 caps and scored 10 goals for his country, having started all three of the Socceroos’ matches at the 2018 finals in Russia, with his international experience plain to be seen.

The Latest: Burke shocked at news

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Burke couldn’t hide his shock at the former Celtic man’s omission by Graham Arnold.

He tweeted:

“Wow, no Tom Rogic! Good news for Albion as he’ll have the WC break to get up to full fitness and work with Corberan, but heartbreaking for the 53-cap intl who should be a star player for the Socceroos.”

The Verdict: Seems extremely harsh

From a personal perspective, this is a bitter blow for Rogic, who may have viewed this World Cup as his last for Australia, considering that he turns 30 next year.

Granted, it may not be a bad thing for West Brom, allowing him to get his fitness up during December, but the midfielder will surely have been hopeful of a call-up given his aforementioned tournament experience.

The hope is that this spurs on Rogic during the second half of the season as he looks to prove Arnold wrong and produce some influential Championship showings for the Baggies.
