Manchester United suffered a late 1-0 defeat to Brighton in the Premier League on Thursday evening.

It was nearly a repeat of the score line when Erik ten Hag’s side took on the Seagulls at Wembley a matter of weeks ago.

It took a penalty shoot out on that occasion to ensure a place in the FA Cup final but no such luck fell United’s way this week.

Instead, the good fortune went to Roberto De Zerbi as Alexis Mac Allister popped up in the 99th minute to send the home support wild.

it wasn’t a positive night for the Old Trafford outfit at all, as Ten Hag took a brunt of criticism for his behaviour on the touchline.

The German dashed down the touch line and in the process of injuring his hamstring, decided to scream in the face of the fourth official.

Ten Hag wasn’t quite a boisterous as the Liverpool boss on Thursday but he had his own encounter at the Amex.

indeed, footage has been pinpointed during the game a moment where the Dutchman had an angry exchange with the linesman.

After the way Klopp was criticised for his actions last weekend, fans were keen to ensure Ten Hag didn’t get away lightly either.

Liverpool have taken a big step towards signing Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister after holding late night talks, according to a newspaper report over the weekend.

The Reds are not wasting time in their search for new talent and could make the Argentinian their first signing of the summer when the window opens.

Jurgen Klopp has historically worked hard to ensure signings join the club before pre-season whenever possible.

Have Liverpool agreed on terms with Brighton for Mac Allister?

According to Tuttomercatoweb, via Sport Witness, Liverpool "already have an agreement" in place with Brighton over a £60m deal. The newspaper claims that Liverpool held late night talks during the weekend in an attempt to thrash out the terms Mac Allister wants included in his contract with the Merseyside club.

Reportedly, negotiations ended "late at night" in order to "balance the salary" as well as to persuade Mac Allister that moving to Anfield is his best move. This is in spite of the fact that Liverpool are likely to not have Champions League football next season, barring a massive slipup from Manchester United or Newcastle United.

Mac Allister, who has become the Seagulls' star man this season, has been offered a five-year contract until 2028 worth around €5m (£4.3m) plus bonuses. Liverpool's late night negotiations brought the club and player "much closer" to a middle ground.

Should Mac Allister choose Liverpool as his next club?

Even without European football, Liverpool have plenty to offer. For a start, Klopp is a manager that many players want to play for due to his track record of getting the most out of his players.

At 24, Mac Allister isn't under huge pressure to start playing in the Champions League. More importantly, he needs to decide on who gives him the best chance of maximising his potential in the next five years.

United may be slightly further ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League right now but Anfield may still hold more promise over the next few years than Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag is still a relatively untested manager on the elite end of the game while Klopp is tried and tested.

Liverpool are, however, in need of major investment and if they don't recruit as well as they have since Klopp joined, the Reds' fortunes may follow this season's trend as opposed to reverting to the levels displayed last season when they almost won the quadruple.

If Newcastle can secure Champions League football next term, however, this will no doubt make them a much more attractive prospect for their primary transfer targets.

While speaking on his Here We Go Podcast, the Italian journalist explained (10:50): "So around Moussa Diaby there is a lot of interest.

"I would include Newcastle and PSG, for sure, because many clubs have sent scouts to follow this boy.

"At the moment, I'm not aware of anything advanced with Real Madrid."

Will Moussa Diaby join Newcastle?

It's not hard to see why the French winger – who's been hailed a "beast" by some in the media – is attracting so much attention. After all, he has 14 goals and 11 assists while playing for Leverkusen this season.

However, this £38k-p/w star likely won't come cheap. Indeed, while his wages aren't extortionate, his transfer fee might be as €100m (£88.5m) was quoted when there was interest in Diaby last January.

By the sounds of it, though, at the moment there is no leading candidate just yet in this particular transfer race – which is certainly promising news for the Magpies.

Once the season comes to an end and Newcastle will know if they are in the Champions League, they will surely then make more of a concerted effort to push for Diaby if he is indeed viewed as a primary target.

But with the player having once played for PSG in the past, coming through the academy to make 34 senior appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, he may prefer a move back home instead of trying something new in the Premier League.

No doubt more will become clear in the coming months.

Tom Smith edged a catch to Ambrose when he drove altogether too loosely at Keith Barker’s seventh ball of the innings and Haseeb Hameed’s sometimes painful education in the wiles of Division One cricket continued when he was leg-before to a yorker from Rikki Clarke.When Peterson also departed Lancashire’s fans surely feared that their recent batting travails were about to resume and, indeed, they yet might. Liverpool are in pole position to bring Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga to the Premier League this summer, according to reports.

What's the latest on Veiga to Anfield?

The Spaniard is an academy graduate of the La Liga outfit having worked his way up through the various youth ranks to become a regular feature of Carlos Carvalhal’s first-team, making 51 senior appearances to date.

As per WhoScored, being his side’s second top-performing offensive player and third overall with a match rating of 6.77, the 20-year-old has grabbed the attention of Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside, even though his target’s contract still has another three years remaining.

Spanish outlet AS previously reported that the Reds and top-flight rivals Manchester United have already both held talks regarding a deal for the talented prospect who is open to leaving his homeland at the end of the season, and a fresh update has now emerged in favour of FSG.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are “leading the chase” to sign Veiga ahead of the 2023/24 term. West Indies have made an unpromising start to their preparations for the tri-series against Australia and South Africa, as they were beaten twice in the space of three days by a Barbados Select XI in a pair of practice matches.Thrashed by 50 runs in a day-night encounter at the Kensington Oval on Wednesday, West Indies lost again by four wickets in Cave Hill on Friday. These were the first fixtures for the team since their World T20 victory in India, with the squad comprising of some T20 players mixed with younger names.While the main priority for the team was to gain match practice in a variety of conditions ahead of the tri-series, the fact that they were unable to defeat a side composed of some players with limited international experience and Barbados’ fringe players does not bode well for harder assignments ahead.In the first match, half-centuries from Shai Hope and Omar Phillips led the way for Barbados Select in compiling a tally of 290 for 8 from 50 overs. Offspinner Hayden Walsh (3 for 17) and seamers Kevin Stoute (2 for 28), Tarik Shorey (2 for 33) and Dario Seale (2 for 50) then rounded West Indies up for 250 in 47.1 overs.Conditions were lower and slower in Cave Hill, and West Indies scrapped their way to 200 for 9 from 45 overs after choosing to bat. No player was able to make a half-century, while medium-pacer Kyle Mayers scooped 4 for 47.In reply, Barbados Select cruised to the target with seven overs to spare, helped by 49 from Aaron Jones and 48 from Hope.
