'My body has not let me down' – Anderson

James Anderson insists he will be fit to play a role in England’s Test tour of India next month, even though he is unlikely to start bowling again for another three weeks

Andrew Miller04-Oct-2016James Anderson insists he will be fit to play a role in England’s Test tour of India next month, even though he is unlikely to start bowling again for another three weeks as he continues his recovery from a long-term shoulder injury.Speaking at Lord’s ahead of the NatWest OSCAs, Anderson admitted his frustration at missing out on the Bangladesh leg of England’s campaign, following a stress fracture of his left shoulder blade that caused him to miss the first Test against Pakistan in July. However, he took umbrage at the suggestion that – at the age of 34 and with 463 Test wickets to his name in a 14-year England career – his body is beginning to struggle with the intensity of his international workload.”I feel fine,” Anderson told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s a frustrating injury where everything feels good, the rest of my body feels great, but as soon as I try to bowl I’ve got a bit of pain there. It’s something that’s going to take a few more weeks to rest and recover. I’ve got another scan in three weeks to see if it’s healed enough for me to start bowling.”I’m not going to miss the entire trip, no,” he said. “I’m very confident I’m going to be involved in the India series, it is a frustrating injury, something I want to get right, but it does happen in cricket, in sport, you get injured, you’ve just got to deal with it, and hopefully I can get as fit as possible as soon as possible.”Despite Anderson’s optimism, the timescale is a concern, with England facing five Tests against India in the space of six weeks, starting in Rajkot on November 9, one week after the conclusion of the Bangladesh tour.James Anderson at the NatWest OSCAs at Lord’s•ECB

Anderson has not bowled in a competitive fixture since the fourth Test against Pakistan at The Oval in August, and with no warm-up games scheduled for the early weeks of the India leg, there will be scant opportunity for him to regain his match fitness ahead of one of the toughest assignments in Test cricket. What is more, having not missed an England Test through injury since the Sri Lanka series in 2011 (at Edgbaston in 2012, he was rested alongside Stuart Broad for a dead-rubber against West Indies) Anderson has now had to sit out four of England’s last 16 Tests – two against Australia in the 2015 Ashes, and one each against South Africa and Pakistan. His situation is such that Andrew Strauss, the director of England cricket, admitted after the squad’s arrival in Bangladesh earlier this week that he “didn’t know” whether to expect Anderson’s return at any stage of the tour, adding that he may require careful management over the next 12 months if he is to survive a hectic schedule that culminates in next year’s Ashes tour of Australia.Anderson, however, disagreed vehemently with that assessment – much as he had done during the Pakistan series, when his protestations of fitness ahead of the Lord’s Test were over-ruled by England’s selectors and medical staff.”No, I don’t think like that at all,” he said. “I’ve had a couple of injuries here and there in the last 18 months, which is pretty much all I’ve had in my career. I don’t think that’s going to deter me from wanting to play in every single game that I possibly can.”I love playing the game, I love playing for England and I don’t want to miss any cricket. I’m sure that the management and medical team will have different opinions to me, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it down the line.”I don’t think my body has let me down in any shape or form,” he added. “I feel as fit as I ever have, I feel very strong, the rest of my body I’ve been working hard on, I’ve done a lot of running, and I’m confident that I can come back fit.”There’s little doubt that England would dearly love to have Anderson back for what promises to be an intense contest, as India – the newly-crowned No.1 Test team – seek to avenge their home-and-away defeats in their last two series against England. In spite of those who maintain that Anderson loses his impact away from England’s green seamers, his record in India stands up to scrutiny – 22 wickets in seven Tests at 29.81, including matchwinning spells in Mumbai in 2006 and Kolkata in 2012. He knows that his experience with the new ball could be crucial in helping to guide the fortunes of a talented but largely untested attack.”Do I have to prove myself?” he said. “I’ve enjoyed bowling out there, it’s a huge challenge as a seam bowler, and I think that gives you more fulfilment and satisfaction if you do do well.”Certainly myself and Stuart [Broad], having been there before, we’ll need that experience when it comes to playing in that series, as we’ll have plenty bowlers who won’t have been there before, so we’ll have to help the guys settle into that environment as quickly as possible.”Recent contests between England and India have been understandably feisty affairs, and Anderson – who became embroiled in an ugly row with Ravi Jadeja during the last series in 2014 – expects this next campaign to be little different.”We are two teams that play with great passion,” he said. “I watched the India-New Zealand series recently and you could see the passion the India side has got, led by Virat Kohli.”We are a very similar team in that respect. We go out there wanting to win and we play with a lot of passion. And when two teams play like that, then inevitably you are going to get some fieriness on the field.”As for the Jadeja row, he added: “That’s in the past. We shook hands at the end of the series and, for me, that was the end of it. And I think for him as well too. I’m sure there will be battles between individuals when we are out there, but hopefully it will be with bat and ball.”In the meantime, however, the focus will be on England’s fortunes in Bangladesh, and in Anderson’s absence, it may fall to the breakthrough star of the English summer, Chris Woakes, to exploit what little movement may be on offer on what are expected to be slow and low wickets at Chittagong and Dhaka.”What he brings with bat and ball is crucial to the balance of our team,” said Anderson. “He’s an amazing talent, he can swing the ball both ways, he can reverse the ball, and he’s got pace so he’s got everything you need to be successful.”And he’s been working on subtle variations – offcutters, legcutters – that you need out there. He is crucial to the balance of our team, he brings depth, and I’m sure he’ll go from strength to strength in the next few years.”James Anderson was speaking at the NatWest Outstanding Service to Cricket Awards (OSCAs), which recognise the contribution that volunteers make to the game. West Ham: Irons leading race to sign £40m speed demon

West Ham lead to the race to sign Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes this summer, but face competition for his signature from other Premier League clubs, as per Matt Law of The Telegraph.

The fire sale has begun at the Kingpower Stadium after their disastrous season ended in relegation to the Championship, and a host of Premier League clubs have lined up to attempt to sign some of the club’s best assets this summer.

West Ham transfer news – Harvey Barnes

It is set to be a busy summer at the London Stadium after West Ham owner David Sullivan confirmed that Declan Rice would be leaving West Ham during this transfer window.

According to Sam Dean and Law, the Hammers have priced Declan Rice at £92m.

Bayern Munich and Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Rice, but Arsenal are currently leading the race to sign the Europa Conference League-winning captain.

West Ham aim to spend the windfall from Rice’s transfer to acquire English winger Harvey Barnes, according to the aforementioned report.

Leicester forward Harvey Barnes.

The Irons will face Premier League competition in the fight to sign Barnes, with Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United all expected to make a run at the 25-year-old.

It is believed that the Foxes currently value Barnes at £40m, but West Ham are likely to start the bidding at around £30m.

Should West Ham sign Harvey Barnes?

Since joining the Midlands outfit from Barnsley in 2018, Barnes has been an important piece in the side – as per Transfermarkt, he has notched 45 goals and 32 appearances in 187 appearances, primarily from a left-wing position.

The tricky winger, who has one cap for England, was a key member of the Leicester side that won the FA Cup in 2021, defeating Manchester City 1-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Michael Cox of The Athletic once stated that Barnes’ game 'is almost solely based around the simplest concept in football: the give and go', arguing the Burnley native’s style is simple and direct, but effective.

Barnes, who Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp once hailed as an "unbelievable player," loves playing one-two passes with his inside forward, and this play style could work wonders in a David Moyes system where the striker often has his back to goal holding up play.

The speed of the player is also one of his greatest strengths.

His top speed of 35.44km/h ranked sixth of all Premier League midfielders last year, and this electric pace would surely be a significant upgrade on the left wing for West Ham over Said Benrahma.

Presenter: £16m-rated ace ‘doesn’t fit the system’ at Liverpool

Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho just doesn't fit the system at Anfield, claims RedMenTV host, Ste Hoare.

The 20-year-old joined the Reds last summer and after initially impressing early on this season, things haven't quite gone to plan.

In fact, he's played just eight Premier League minutes in 2023, and that could be down to Jurgen Klopp's tactics.

What's the latest on Fabio Carvalho's future at Liverpool?

The former Fulham midfielder has been linked with a move away from Anfield, but the club are only prepared to let him go out on loan, recently rejecting a £10m bid from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

With the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister, and reports suggesting Liverpool are pursuing several midfielders, there's going to be plenty of competition in the middle of the park for the club, and it seems Carvalho won't fit into plans this season.

A number of Premier League sides, including his former club Fulham are interested in taking the Portuguese youngster on loan, with several offers currently on the table, but it remains to be seen where he'll end up.

What has Ste Hoare said about Fabio Carvalho and Liverpool?

Despite Carvalho's struggles at Liverpool this season, Hoare believes it's not down to talent, but a lack of fit in Klopp's system that has caused the £16m-rated midfielder problems this year.

Speaking to Football FanCast, the RedMenTV host said:

"It's mad because Liverpool tried so hard to sign Carvalho. They beat so many teams, they paid more than they needed to make sure they got him.

"They really liked what they saw and by all accounts, he is a good player, he just doesn't fit the system."

How did Fabio Carvalho perform this season compared to last year?

While making the move from Fulham and Championship football, to one of the Premier League's biggest sides in Liverpool was always going to be tough, Carvalho's spell in Merseyside has seen his game time and output drop drastically.

Across the board, the 20-year-old's statistical numbers have all decreased this year, which is hardly a surprise given his lack of regular minutes.

Last year, the midfielder completed 1.2 dribbles per game for Fulham, seeing that number drop dramatically to 0.2 per game for Klopp's men this season, whilst his WhoScored average rating dropped from 7.11 at Fulham to 6.37 for the Reds, and he went from completing 1.7 key passes per game at Craven Cottage, to a measly 0.1 this campaign.

At 20 years old, there's still plenty of time for Carvalho, who is sponsored by Nike, to turn his Liverpool career around and a spell out on loan may be the catalyst in that, but if he doesn't fit the system now, who's to say he will when he comes back.

Mashrafe, Sabbir fined; Buttler reprimanded, following on-field row

Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s captain, and his team-mate Sabbir Rahman have been fined 20 percent of their match fees by the ICC, following their role in the on-field row with Jos Buttler

Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s captain, and his team-mate Sabbir Rahman have been fined 20 percent of their match fees by the ICC, following their role in the on-field row with Jos Buttler, England’s one-day captain, that marred the second one-day international against Bangladesh on Sunday.Buttler, who received an official reprimand for his own actions, reacted angrily to provocation from Bangladesh’s fielders after being given out for 57, via a third-umpire review, during England’s 34-run defeat at Mirpur. All three players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by the ICC match referee, Javagal Srinath, meaning there was no need for a formal hearing.”The Bangladesh players overstepped in their celebration of Jos Buttler’s wicket, which prompted an inappropriate reaction from the dismissed batsman and required the on-field umpires’ intervention,” said Srinath. “We all want to see high intensity on the field of play, but only as long as it is not provoking or antagonising or disrespecting the opponent.”The Bangladesh players were found to have violated article 2.1.7 of the ICC code of conduct which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.Buttler was found in breach of article 2.1.4, “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an international match”.All three players pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the sanctions, which also include one demerit point being added to the disciplinary records of each player. If any of the trio are given four demerit points within the next two years then that will be converted into at least two suspension points which carry a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20 internationals, depending on the fixture schedule. While it was a first offence for the two captains, Sabbir now has three demerit points on his record after being given his first two for breaching the ICC’s code of conduct against Afghanistan last month.Buttler’s run-a-ball 57 had given England renewed hope of sealing the series win after slumping to 26 for 4, but his dismissal left them 123 for 7 and facing near-certain defeat.”I was just a little bit disappointed in the fashion they celebrated,” he said afterwards. “Mainly just the way they celebrated by running towards me and giving me a bit of a send-off.”You don’t have to run up to a guy. I’m disappointed to get out, but emotions were running high, they were obviously delighted to get the wicket, maybe I should have just walked away.”There has, as yet, been no ICC investigation into another flashpoint at the end of the match – as raised by Ben Stokes on Twitter, and reportedly involving Tamim Iqbal and Jonny Bairstow.”Congrats to Bangladesh on the win tonight,” Stokes tweeted. “Outplayed us, what I won’t stand for is someone putting a shoulder to my teammate at handshakes.”

CA, CSA oppose WICB's release-fee concept

CA and CSA have voiced opposition to the WICB’s decision to levy a 20% release fee for NOCs to West Indian cricketers seeking to play in overseas T20 leagues

Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA) have strongly objected to the WICB’s decision to charge a release fee in order to provide a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) to Caribbean players participating in overseas Twenty20 tournaments. The WICB had decided to impose a levy of 20% of a player’s contract fee, which it says should be paid by the host board in order for West Indies players to participate in their T20 tournaments. The news came to light earlier this week when it was leaked that WICB informed Kieron Pollard, on November 3, that he would not be given the NOC to travel to South Africa for their domestic T20 tournament, where he plays for the Cape Cobras. In a subsequent media release on Tuesday, the WICB issued an explanation of its decision, which it said was a policy move made by its board of directors. But later in the day, WICB chief executive Michael Muirhead said Pollard had been granted the NOC without any condition. Muirhead added that the WICB would carry on the dialogue with the other boards.”While we do not wish to act in restraint of trade, we must seek a balance to ensure that there is fair and adequate compensation for the investment made in the players,” the WICB release said. “What WICB seeks is some compensation to recognise the investment made into players, an investment from which another Full Member is benefitting.”However, other boards disagreed. Both CSA and CA said they did not support the proposal and pointed out that it was recently tabled for the first time by the WICB, but not agreed upon, at the Cape Town round of ICC meetings held in October.”It was a WICB proposal, but not supported by any other member at the time,” CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat said. “It was the first time the topic was raised and it was concluded by all that we should reflect on it as a part of all of the other reforms or regulations that we are presently working on to support the primacy of international cricket.”Lorgat said the WICB decision to go solo without proper consideration and agreement with other stakeholders was inappropriate. “I was quite surprised by the approach of the WICB because we had discussed this concept in a very preliminary way at the last chief executives committee (CEC) meeting in Cape Town. As an isolated measure, we cannot support it at this stage.”Muirhead told ESPNcricinfo that WICB president Dave Cameron had said the concept was first discussed by the ICC board of directors at a meeting earlier this year. “I understand from my President that it was approved at the ICC board level, which is above the CEC. The Board agreed to the concept that [the] fee would be charged. I have not seen the minutes itself, but this is what he told me.”Haroon Lorgat said such a fee is more appropriate for a league like the IPL, which is played over two months•Getty Images

Muirhead said the ICC might have discussed the issue further on its own and perhaps pointed out some “practical” issues, which led to the discussion once again by the CEC in Cape Town in October.”It came up for discussion at the CEC [meeting] and then they took that back to the Board. But there was an initial approval at the board level earlier.”According to Lorgat, the WICB decision was surprising because the ICC members had agreed that the concept of a release fee needed more discussion to understand the full implications. He confirmed that CSA had responded to the WICB saying it would not support the payment of release fees at this stage. “We have written back saying we are not in a position to agree to pay release fees when neither our board nor the ICC members have properly considered the concept.”That opinion was supported by CA, too. “We are aware of the issues pertaining to West Indies Cricket Board releasing players for other domestic leagues and are in discussion with them on this,” a CA spokesperson said. “Cricket Australia does not support the proposal suggesting that release fees be paid by home member boards to WICB in order for West Indies players to play in their domestic leagues. This matter was briefly discussed and rejected by member board CEOs at the recent ICC Chief Executives’ meeting in Cape Town.”Administrators – in the ICC and of the Full Members – have been concerned about the rising popularity of domestic T20 tournaments, which have eaten into the viewership of the other formats of the game. What has also bothered many boards is players opting to retire from international cricket to become free agents, in order to lengthen their T20 shelf life.As such, Lorgat said a release fee was appropriate in the case of the IPL, which is played over nearly two months every year when all international cricket effectively comes to a standstill, as players from most countries participate in the lucrative tournament in India. In addition, the BCCI does not release their players to the other leagues. For these reasons the BCCI pays member boards a certain fee by way of compensation.”It should clearly apply to the BCCI because all the other countries have effectively created a window for the IPL and thus lost the opportunity to commercialise their international rights during that period,” Lorgat said. “That is why the BCCI compensates the other member boards. It is clearly very different.”But Lorgat added that the same formula could not be mechanically applied to other member boards.”Without having worked on the details and the implications, I have a feeling that the smaller boards will be disadvantaged by the payment of release fees, or it would simply end up all square between the various boards with similar amounts being paid to each other.”

Man Utd Could Sign New Rooney In £100m ‘GOAT’

Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for Harry Kane this summer but now a new update has emerged that could put a dampener on the dreams of bringing him to Old Trafford.

What's the latest on Man United's interest in Harry Kane?

According to The Times, the Red Devils are losing hope of being able to secure the signature of the Tottenham Hotspur striker this summer.

As per the report, Daniel Levy remains firm on not wanting to part ways with his biggest asset whilst Erik ten Hag remains keen to make Kane his leading man in the forward line.

It is claimed that Man United have tried to strike a deal to secure the striker's services already but Levy is adamant that he will not be sold to strengthen a Premier League rival, despite having just one year left on his contract.

Should Man United continue their pursuit of Harry Kane?

There is no doubt that the Manchester giants will be desperate to strengthen in the centre-forward role this summer after the abysmal efforts from loanee Wout Weghorst and mainstay Anthony Martial, with no time to waste in finding the perfect player to take up the role ahead of next season.

However, giving up on the signing of Kane – dubbed "exquisite" by Jamie Redknapp – should not be an option for Ten Hag as the 29-year-old would be a huge asset in the forward line and would comfortably become the club's answer to Wayne Rooney, with the now retired striker never really replaced at Old Trafford.

The compatriots boast incredible similarities as Kane replaced the Man United legend as the most trusted centre-forward for the England national team, not only following in his footsteps to captain the side but also breaking his all-time goal-scoring record on the international stage too.

harry-kane-spurs-premier-league-man-united-transfers

In terms of their style of play, the pair share even more likeness with Rooney often dropping deeper than a traditional number nine into a versatile play-making role towards the latter stages of his career.

That very much saw him trouble opponents in the same way the Spurs striker does for his team too, both comfortable, confident and prolific in a deeper role with quality wingers either side operating to provide chances for them.

Whilst taking all into consideration, the most striking and vital resemblance that the pair possess is their unrivalled finishing and ability to kill games with their vision for goal, something that would take Man United back to the elite level they were playing at when their all-time goalscorer represented the team in the final third.

Over 49 appearances in all competitions this season, the £100m-valued England captain – hailed as a "GOAT" of the Premier League by Christian Stellini – scored a whopping 32 goals and delivered five assists, as well as making up for 47% of Spurs' goal participations in the top flight and only finishing second to Erling Haaland in the race for the golden boot.

With that being said, if there is even the slightest chance that Man United could strike up a deal to sign Kane this summer they should grab the opportunity with both hands, as his leadership, style of play and hunger for goals could solve Ten Hag's biggest headache next season.

Imran's record-breaking ton gives Khulna full points

A wrap of all the first round matches of the National Cricket League held across Bangladesh

Tushar Imran’s 19 centuries is the most by a Bangladesh batsman in first-class cricket•TigerCricket.com

Khulna Division crushed Barisal Division by 10 wickets at the BKSP-3 ground to bring up the first result in Tier-1 of the 2016-17 National Cricket League. After Tushar Imran hit a record 19th hundred, debutant seamer Ashiquzzaman skittled out Barisal with a match haul of nine wickets.Barisal were bowled out for 171 runs in 60.4 overs in the first innings, with pacers Ziaur Rahman and Ashiquzzaman taking three wickets each. Fazle Mahmud’s 95 represented more than half of Barisal’s total. In reply, Khulna took a lead of exactly 200 runs, courtesy Imran, who went past Alok Kapali and Mohammad Ashraful to possess the most first-class hundreds by a Bangladeshi. He made 108 with a dozen fours and a six, and shared a 117-run third wicket stand with Anamul Haque, who top-scored with 136, his 11th first-class ton. Anamul struck eleven fours and six sixes in his 202-ball knock. Left-arm spinner Monir Hossain took six wickets and later struck a 70-ball 72 as Barisal could only muster 211 runs in the second innings.Ashiquzzaman took 6 for 57 to finish with nine wickets on first-class debut. His player-of-the-match winning efforts left Khulna with just 12 runs to chase on the third afternoon, which they completed in 1.4 overs.Dhaka Division beat Dhaka Metropolis by five wickets in a low-scoring fixture in the other Tier-1 game in Fatullah. This was the first time in five years that no half-century was recorded in a first-class fixture in Bangladesh.Batting first, Dhaka Metro were bowled out for 166 runs with veteran paceman Mohammad Sharif taking four wickets. In reply, Dhaka could manage just a 21-run lead as Mohammad Ashraful starred with his part-time offspin to take three wickets alongside seamer Shahidul Islam.Dhaka Metro, handed a lifeline, had an opportunity to pull away with a better batting effort in the second dig. But that wasn’t to be as Sharif picked up three wickets; Dhaka metro hurtled to 125 all out in 55.5 overs.Dhaka nearly made heavy weather of their 105-run target. They slipped to 63 for 5, thereby raising possibility of an unlikely win for Metro. But Taibur and Zahiduzzaman put on an unbroken 43-run stand for the sixth wicket to complete a nervy win.
