Man United: Garnacho drops exciting message about Rasmus Hojlund

Manchester United ace Alejandro Garnacho has given a glimpse into the future of what he and striker Rasmus Hojlund can team up to offer at the Red Devils, in a message that will surely excite United fans.

What's the latest news involving Manchester United?

The Red Devils were on the end of a controversial 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last weekend, with late goals from Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus sealing three points for the Gunners on home turf, as per BBC Sport.

Manchester United encountered their fair share of controversy during the fixture and saw a goal from Garnacho adjudged to be offside that would've given them a 2-1 lead in the final embers of the game – the video assistant referee chalked off the strike and the Red Devils couldn't take a result from the affair, leaving them 11th in the Premier League table after four games, having taken six points from an available 12.

Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof were both withdrawn during the match and Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire finished the game as Ten Hag's central defensive pairing – the Dutchman has now explained why he had to take off both players, stating to Manchester United's official website: "Victor was ill, so he had to come off. And Licha said he had a problem on his foot. But I'm not sure if it's an injury.

We have to wait, we have to see, we have to make the diagnosis."

TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul has taken to X to confirm that Martinez has joined up with the Argentina squad for matches against Ecuador and Bolivia in the coming week, stating: "Licha Martinez is fine. The studies gave that he does not have an injury."

What has Garnacho said about Hojlund?

Writing on Instagram, via The Manchester Evening News, Hojlund took to the social media platform to post about his debut in Manchester United colours, stating: "So proud to make my debut. The dream became a reality. Unlucky with the result today… but we will bounce back after the international break."

Argentina international Garnacho replied to Hojlund's post on Instagram and simply said "we will be back, together", also adding both players' numbers as a pairing.

Of course, their debut match as a duo ended in defeat. However, Manchester United fans will be encouraged by what the future may hold with Hojlund and Garnacho being at the forefront of their play in the final third for many years to come.

What next for Manchester United?

New signing Sofyan Amrabat has arrived in the building at Old Trafford and will bear the number four shirt on his back as he gets to work as a Manchester United player.

As per The Guardian, tensions are rising between Manchester United boss Ten Hag and winger Jadon Sancho, who has issued a statement on social media outlet X claiming that he has become a "scapegoat" figure amid comments from his manager criticising his level of performance in training.

Manchester United have not commented on the matter publicly and instead, a meeting looks likely to occur between both Ten Hag and Sancho to try and find a way forward for both parties.

The Daily Mail have revealed that Chelsea considered making a move for Sancho in the summer before opting to bring in Cole Palmer from Manchester City in light of concerns over the 23-year-old's mindset.

Trent Copeland had taken four of the first seven scalps for the home side. But Cooper and Tom Andrews combined for a 96-run stand to dig the Redbacks out of the mire. Andrews made his maiden first-class half-century before falling to the legspin of Daniel Fallins.Cooper looked set to be stranded but sneaked to his 10th first-class hundred when the Redbacks were nine down.

A look at security arrangements ahead of Karachi’s biggest cricket event in nearly a decade

After nine years with no cricket of comparable magnitude, Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan, is gearing up to host the Pakistan Super League final. This is the second major venue after Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium to host a high-profile game in recent years, and it is considered a crucial step on the long road to reviving international cricket in the country. The final between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi will be played at the National Stadium and the entire route from the hotel to the stadium will be lined with guards from Pakistan’s paramilitary force, the Rangers, and the Sindh police. A full house (around 33,000) is expected, with tickets sold out hours after they were released. There is a three-tier security layer, heavily guarded by security forces. Deputy Inspector General Traffic Imran Yaqoob Minhas, while addressing a press conference, said a total of 8500 police personnel will be deployed around the stadium for the match. The landscape of the city has changed drastically over the last nine years and the law and order situation has improved significantly. Karachi still remains the venue of the last completed Test match in Pakistan, a few days before the 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore.Karachi is generally viewed as a more challenging city in terms of its law-and-order situation, and providing a complete security plan, what with the nearest hotel being at least 12 km from the National Stadium, is harder than it is in Lahore. The stadium is situated in the centre of the city, and all major routes from all four directions that connect with the stadium will be closed for the general public. The two biggest hospitals of the city, Agha Khan and Liaquat National, are located close to the stadium, but the roads leading to them will be open. A shuttle service will be in place to take fans from the parking area to the stadium gates. The flow of traffic is likely to be reduced, but a strict directive has been issued to follow the day’s plan to avoid congestion. The fact that the game will be held on Sunday will help.”It’s a big occasion for Karachi and the whole country,” said Rashid Latif, the former Pakistan wicketkeeper who is now team director at Karachi Kings. “I am very much thankful to the PCB for making this possible. This was a much-needed step because you cannot revive cricket by playing at one venue. It’s important to involve at least three or four cities to get this going. Otherwise, you cannot have a positive impact. Karachi is a huge city and I cannot explain in words how big this would be for us and for this country.”We have played a month in Dubai and Sharjah but we actually felt the intensity when cricket came to Lahore for the playoffs. We realised how people are hungry for cricket and how desperate they are to have cricket back in their stadiums. This is huge for fans; they are really passionate about the game and during isolation we have suffered a lot in world of cricket.”I think the security is somewhat overdone. I don’t want to be critical but I feel security should be given to the foreigners only, not to us. When we were in Lahore for playoffs, even local players and officials were restricted from going out freely. So this shouldn’t be the case because this will give off a bad impression among the overseas players.”The security protocols are being overseen by international security consultant Reg Dickason who has praised the “remarkably thorough” security arrangements for the final, saying they were “as good as I have seen in all my years”.The PCB plans to bring a major chunk of the next edition of the PSL to Pakistan, with at least three venues hosting more than 15 games in total. “We plan to have half of the PSL next year in Pakistan,” Najam Sethi, the PSL chairman, said on Friday. “But for that, we need four stadiums. As of now, we have Lahore, Karachi and Multan ready to host big matches, so now our focus is on preparing the stadiums of Rawalpindi and Peshawar. We’ve been working day and night to bring international cricket back to the country.”

Spurs star was compared to Walker when he signed, now he can’t get a game

While the likes of Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg remain on the books at Tottenham Hotspur, it proved to be a largely effective summer clearout for manager Ange Postecoglou, with as many as nine first-team assets moving on either permanently or on loan.

Aside from the sale of club record goalscorer, Harry Kane, the remaining departures appeared to be those who had fallen down the pecking order at N17 in recent times, with Sergio Reguilon, for instance, joining Manchester United after having spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid.

While many of those exits were also figures who had been at the club over an extended period of time – including academy graduates Harry Winks and Japhet Tanganga – in the case of Joe Rodon, the Wales international had only been signed three years ago, although has made just 24 appearances in that time.

The 25-year-old opted to make the move to Championship side Leeds United on a temporary basis, having subsequently been joined at Elland Road by Spurs colleague, Djed Spence, with the promising Englishman seeking a swift escape route from north London following a dismal debut campaign last time out.

Djed Spence enjoys rare minutes on the pitch as Antonio Conte watches on for Tottenham Hotspur.

Having been signed from Middlesbrough just last summer, big things were expected of the attacking full-back at the time, although any early excitement has quickly been shelved due to the wideman's lack of impact since then.

Why did Tottenham sign Djed Spence?

It is a reasonable question to ask considering the 23-year-old's limited involvement over the past 12 months, yet the defender had certainly warranted the interest from those at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after his prior standout performances in the second tier.

Despite falling out of favour under Neil Warnock at 'Boro, the London-born starlet was snapped up by fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest for the 2021/22 campaign, proving an instrumental part of the Tricky Trees' successful promotion charge.

As part of a side that included recent Spurs signing, Brennan Johnson, Spence scored twice and registered four assists from his 42 league appearances that season, having operated in an attacking, wing-back role down the right flank.

The 6 foot dynamo was also particularly impressive as Steve Cooper's side reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup – scoring in the 4-1 win over Leicester City – with pundit Ian Wright having been full of praise for the exciting revelation following the shock victory over Arsenal:

"But I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time. I said to him afterwards, 'whatever's happening, whatever you're doing, the level you've just shown us here is the level you have to be consistently hitting, Djed'."

While a return to the City Ground on a permanent basis was mooted that summer, it was Daniel Levy who ultimately managed to strike a deal to snap up the one-time Fulham youth ace.

How much did Tottenham pay for Djed Spence?

The talk prior to the youngster's move to N17 was that England – and Spurs – had potentially found a natural heir to Kyle Walker at right-back, with respected analyst EBL notably writing on Twitter at the time:

"Djed Spence is special. He's a ridiculous athlete who could be used like Kyle Walker in defensive transition or as a powerful runner from deep. Only question is his dedication to the sport after his run in with Neil Warnock. If that's in check, he'll be an elite right back."

That comparison was also made by fans of the Lilywhites, with the Tottenham faithful hoping to have stumbled across a dream successor to Walker, who had left for Manchester City on a £50m deal back in 2017.

To be likened to arguably the "greatest ever English right-back" – as per pundit Micah Richards – is no small feat, although Spence was the recipient of other stellar praise at the time of the move, with talkSPORT's Trevor Sinclair describing him as the "real deal" and someone who could cause a "huge problem" for other teams.

England'sKyleWalkercelebrates after the match

With that in mind, it looked as if Levy had landed something of a bargain as the player's £20m move was confirmed, although those comparisons to the experienced Walker now look rather foolish such have been Spence's woes of late.

What has gone wrong for Djed Spence at Tottenham?

It is fair to say that the former Forest loanee has not had the best of times in the capital, with the 23-year-old already on his second loan spell away from Spurs, after signing for Ligue 1 side Rennes back in January.

Prior to that mid-season escape, the 2022 signing had hardly had a look in under Antonio Conte, despite appearing well-suited as a wing-back option in the Italian's preferred 3-4-3 formation.

As Conte himself admitted, however, Spence had been more of a "club" signing rather than his own personal choice, with that playing its part in seeing the former England U21 international make just a handful of late substitute appearances in the top flight in the first half of last term.

That lack of action led Paul Robinson to suggest that the forgotten man was heading for "a downward spiral" with a January exit needed, although that temporary departure to France hardly altered his fortunes, as he has since been overlooked after returning to his parent club over the summer.

How has Djed Spence performed this season?

A change in the dugout has not brought with it a change of situation for Spence as he was deemed surplus to requirements by new boss Postecoglou, hence the full-back sealing his return to the Championship in order to join Daniel Farke's men.

Having joined late in the window, the £25k-per-week asset has made just a solitary, nine-minute appearance for the Whites thus far, albeit while having been branded "terrific" by journalist Graham Smyth for his impact in that short cameo.

Djed Spence

That could well be a sign of things to come with regard to his time in Yorkshire, with that move potentially set to be just what the Spurs man is in need of to help get his career back on track.

Whether his future can lie back in north London in the long-term remains to be seen, however, with Spence having thus far not been the Walker-esque figure that was expected.

Man Utd: Solskjaer’s "woeful" dud has seen value plummet by £64m

Manchester United’s 2023/24 season hasn’t begun in the fashion Erik ten Hag anticipated, and it could unravel into a nightmare should they fail to win against Brighton and Hove Albion tomorrow afternoon.

With just two wins from four Premier League matches, United are already six points behind leaders Manchester City and a major upturn in form will be required to see them through this blip.

The summer transfer window proved to be underwhelming to say the least and that’s despite signing Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

None of these arrivals have made an impact as yet, but the Dutchman will need them to step up sooner rather than later or else they could soon to start to feel the heat of the Old Trafford crowd.

Ten Hag did manage to ship out Fred however, although the Red Devils suffered a major loss on the Brazilian.

How much did Manchester United sell Fred for?

The midfielder cost the Old Trafford side £52m when he joined in the summer 0f 2018 and his five seasons in Manchester ended up being a major letdown.

Fred

He made over 200 appearances for the club, yet scored just 14 times and his last season saw the 30-year-old start only 23 games across all competitions, and it looked as though he wasn’t part of Ten Hag’s future.

Indeed, United accepted an offer of £12.9m for the Brazilian from Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, and he departed after five years in the Premier League.

His poor performances meant the club failed to recoup anywhere near what they spent on him in 2018, and they have another player whose value has dipped rapidly since arriving in Manchester – Harry Maguire.

How much did Manchester United sign Harry Maguire for?

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm, the Red Devils lured the Leicester City centre-back to Old Trafford for a staggering £80m fee in 2019.

The manager heaped praise on him not long after signing the player, saying: “I think he's been brilliant [since signing],” said Ole. “I think he's come into the dressing room and been a leader. He’s also obviously a leader on the pitch, you can see that.

“He is definitely a character and a personality that can be a captain of a big club, yeah, and he's a leader in the dressing room – by performances, presence, stature, and behaviour.

“He's a character that you'd say you'd like to follow. Some are technical leaders, some are leaders by voice and he's got the lot really.”

Despite the strong start, the massively inflated fee has hung over his head over the previous four years and his value has since dipped majorly.

What is Harry Maguire’s market value now?

According to Football Transfers, the Englishman is now only valued at €19m (£16m) and this represents a decrease of £64m – or 80% – in relation to his initial transfer fee.

It is a sharp decline and even when United signed him, Maguire’s value was only €22.7m (£19.5m), suggesting that Solskjaer clearly overpaid the Foxes in order to sign the defender.

This plummet in value has been due to a variety of reasons, but it has been his performances for United over the previous few years which have ultimately been the catalyst.

Why is Harry Maguire worth this much?

His first two seasons at the club actually saw Maguire rank in the top five for overall Sofascore rating for his performances in the Premier League, but then he soon started to decline.

During the 2021/22 campaign, he dropped to ninth in the squad for overall rating, while ranking 12th for tackles and sixth for interceptions per game, indicating that he wasn’t having a positive influence in the team.

The following season was even worse as he struggled under Ten Hag, who took over in the summer of 2022. The defender ended up making just eight league starts, and it soon became apparent that the Dutchman favoured a defensive duo of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

He was even criticised by former professional footballer Lianne Sanderson, who said: “It’s really difficult because Harry Maguire has been woeful for United for a long time. He was again last night. He will know that. He doesn’t need everyone telling him. But Gareth Southgate picking him is hanging him out to dry. Not good for the lad at all. It’s obvious to see.”

According to FBref, the 30-year-old failed to rank in the top 25% when compared to positional peers for clearances, blocks and interceptions per 90, while ranking in the lowest 22% for tackles per 90, and it goes to show just how much of a decline he has endured recently.

Harry Maguire

This season hasn’t exactly gone much better as Maguire has played just once in the league, coming on as a late substitute against Arsenal and the Gunners ended up netting twice in added time to secure a vital win.

He failed to make a tackle, interception, or clearance during those 23 minutes on the pitch, winning one of his two aerial duels while also losing possession four times and Ten Hag should keep him on the sidelines following this performance.

It’s evident that Solskjaer endured a major blunder on the defender, wasting a fee of £80m on a player who was relatively unproven at the elite level, and it will now haunt United, especially as they will get just a fraction of this fee should they sell him in the future.

The 59-cap dud still has two years left on his current contract, and it gives Ten Hag plenty of time to find a suitor for the player.

Big money mistakes will need to be avoided over the next few years, especially if the former Ajax boss wants to get United back to the top of English football, and having defenders like Maguire in the starting XI isn’t going to help his cause.

His future looks unclear, despite West Ham United showing interest during the summer transfer window, but one thing is certain, he won't be at the Old Trafford side for much longer, especially if Ten Hag has his way.
