'Best in the world' Saha replaces Pant for first South Africa Test

R Ashwin will also return for his first Test since December last year

Wriddhiman Saha will play his first international match in 22 months after India captain Virat Kohli confirmed that young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was being dropped for the first Test of India’s home season.”Yes, Saha is fit and fine to go, and he’s going to start for us, this series, and his keeping credentials are there for everyone to see,” Kohli said at a press conference the day before the start of the first Test against South Africa, to be played in Visakhapatnam. “He’s played well for us whenever he’s got a chance, with the bat also, and it was unfortunate that he was out for such a long period because of an injury, and according to me he’s the best keeper in the world, so in these conditions, with what he’s done in the past, he starts for us.”Watch cricket on ESPN+

Pant had stepped into the breach left by unfortunate injuries to Saha, which put him out for way longer than originally anticipated. Pant took the spot with centuries in England and in Australia, the only India wicketkeeper to have done so in either of the countries. However, Pant has come in for criticism in recent times for his shot selection in limited-overs cricket. India coach Ravi Shastri has called for a “rap on the knuckles”, and batting coach Vikram Rathour has spoken about the importance of being fearless without being careless. Captain Virat Kohli has also spoken of how youngsters wouldn’t get chance after chance in the highly competitive Indian sides.Pant’s limited-overs form, however, might not be the reason for his omission after all. With Kohli saying Saha was the best pure wicketkeeper in the world, and with Indian spinners difficult to keep to on Indian pitches, the door was left open for Saha, who turns 35 this October.Kohli said Saha didn’t make it to the XI in the West Indies because they wanted to give Pant a few more opportunities while they made sure Saha was absolutely ready.”We felt like Rishabh, given the opportunities, had done well, and although Saha was almost going to start [in the West Indies], we felt it was better to just let him ease back into things rather than just forcing him into starting immediately,” Kohli said about the selection in the West Indies. “We all felt that he’s just come back, and although he’s keeping well, he’s batting well, but it’s fair to give Rishabh a few more opportunities because of what he’s done in the past season for us.”But yeah, look, Saha was always going to be someone that we would back as a pure keeper in Test cricket, and he’s done well under pressure situations also in the past. So it was just about finding the right opportunity and moment to bring him back in, and you need to be wary of those things in a team environment where you understand when to bring a player back, and when to give another guy more opportunities. I think these are very delicate things, you can always look at it in hindsight, whether the timing was right or not, but just go with your gut feel, along with the management, and then you take a call and stand by your decision.”I feel now is the right time for Saha to come back in, get into his zone, and then we know what he can do with the gloves and with the bat as well under pressure situations.”Another comeback that was confirmed by Kohli in his pre-match press conference was that of R Ashwin, who is yet to play international cricket since he injured himself during the Adelaide Test win last December. He is not part of the limited-overs teams anymore, and was left out of the Tests in the West Indies where Ravindra Jadeja was India’s only spinner.”Yes, Ashwin will start. Ashwin and Jadeja, both will start here,” Kohli said. “Look, Jaddu, we felt, was in a better zone, as far as him performing overseas and what he’s done in the past season for the team, so yeah, from that point of view, he started in West Indies. But look, wherever the conditions provide us to go ahead with two spinners, obviously Ash is going to be a threat, and in home conditions, with his batting credentials, and the way he bowls as well, he’s always going to be starting with Jadeja, so that was a no-brainer for us. But backing Jadeja to play in West Indies, the reason was the kind of season he had, and the overseas performance that he’s put in in the past as well.”India XI for first Test: Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane (vice-capt), Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami

O maior objetivo do Vasco é o acesso.

Chelsea have had a shocker on 23y/o who earns more than Caicedo

Chelsea have not been afraid to make a signing or two since the takeover of Todd Boehly in May 2022, as they have splashed the cash on a host of new additions.

The new Blues owner has spent over £1bn on transfers as they aim to close the gap to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool to fight for a first Premier League title since the 2016/2017 season.

Players such as Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo have both joined the Blues for fees, breaking the English transfer record – with the latter joining for £115m from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2023.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo

It would be harsh to question Boehly's ambition with his spending since the takeover. However, one thing that can be questioned is the erratic nature of the spending – with many players failing to match up with the hefty fees spent on them.

Mykhalio Mudryk and Roméo Lavia both joined the club for fees combining nearly £150m, with the pair unable to yet to properly showcase their talent with limited minutes and injuries affecting their start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Mudryk and Lavia's unsuccessful time at the club so far, another player has failed to live up to expectations after his big-money move to Stamford Bridge back in 2022.

Wesley Fofana's record at Chelsea

During his nearly two-year stint at Stamford Bridge, 23-year-old centre-back Wesley Fofana has only made 20 appearances for the club, after multiple injury struggles.

He made his debut in the 2-1 win against West Ham United back in September 2022, before suffering a knee injury in his second outing against Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman was out until February, with Fofana making his return during the 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton. He enjoyed a good run in the Blues side before the end of the 2022/23 campaign, before another injury setback during pre-season back in August.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana.

He didn't travel with the squad for the pre-season tour in the USA, as he underwent surgery on his ruptured ACL.

Fofana hasn't featured at all this campaign, with the defender still recovering from his latest injury setback. Boss Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that the 23-year-old won't feature between now and the end of the season, with the former Leicester City defender working to return ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season in August.

How much Wesley Fofana has cost Chelsea

The club brought Fofana from Leicester for a fee in the region of £75m back in August 2022 – with Fofana penning a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

23-year-old Fofana currently earns £200k-per-week – a figure that is £25k-per-week more than Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer combined, with the defender the third-highest-paid player in the Chelsea squad and his wages contributing to a whopping 6.8% of the club's total wage bill.

Fofana's weekly wage of £200k-p/w, sees him take home £10.4m every season, with the Frenchman set to earn another £62.4m should he finish the remaining six years on his current deal, and that is £50k more per week than Caicedo (£150k-per-week) earns.

Although he joined the club with real potential, the centre-back, unfortunately, hasn't hit the levels expected due to injury, with the 23-year-old's market value taking a huge hit, with Fofana now only valued at £30m – a decrease of 60% on the figure the club paid for him less than two years ago.

Whilst you could argue that it is harsh to blame Chelsea for his injury issues, Fofana missed a staggering 72 matches through injury during his time with Leicester, which shows that the warning signs were there.

Therefore, Boehly and the Blues had a shocker with the signing of the injury-prone defender, who has been far from value for money – given that he earns £50k more per week than Caicedo, who has already played 34 games for the club – 14 more than Fofana in 12 fewer months.

UAE's Rameez and Suri make short work of Hong Kong's 116

Hong Kong are now winless after three matches while UAE have achieved two victories in three outings

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2019

Kinchit Shah lets out an appeal•AFP

Despite a solid platform of 93 for 2 in the 16th over, Hong Kong suffered a middle-order collapse at the back-end of their first innings to finish with only 116 for 7 in their 20 overs against United Arab Emirates. In response, UAE made swift work of the target, chasing it down with 29 balls to spare and eight wickets in hand. The margin of victory lifted UAE to the top of Group B, although that may just be temporary.UAE’s chase was spearheaded by the 93-run second-wicket stand between opener Chirag Suri and No. 3 Rameez Shahzad. After their captain Rohan Mustafa fell in the fourth over, the duo combined to strike nine fours and four sixes in their 67-ball stand to sniff out any hope of victory that Hong Kong may have had. Shahzad’s 37-ball 54 was his highest T20I score, while Suri’s 43-ball 44 brought the opener back into form, something UAE were missing from him at the start of the tournament. Hong Kong pacer Kyle Christie took both UAE wickets, but his dismissal of Shahzad in the 15th over was a mere formality. Three deliveries after the dismissal, Suri found the boundary to seal their second win in three games. That UAE had to chase only 117 was thanks to their varied bowling attack. Junaid Siddique set the tone with the new ball in the first innings, conceding only nine runs in his two overs. With the run-rate hovering below six, openers Ahmad Abbasi and Nizakat Khan perished to left-arm spinner Ahmed Raza and medium-pacer Waheed Ahmed respectively inside 11 overs. A brief recovery then followed, with Kinchit Shah (30) and the captain Aizaz Khan (19) upping the scoring rate, but with both set batsmen falling in the death overs, their new batsmen failed to generate the momentum needed to put up a challenging total. Mustafa’s spell of 2 for 17, including two wickets for only two runs in the 20th over, made him the game’s second most economical bowler. The result meant that Hong Kong’s chances of qualifying for the semi-finals took a big blow while UAE’s win has only strengthened their shout for a final-four spot.

Spurs chasing top four finish in excellent Ange debut season

They seized a vital advantage in that respect last weekend with a very impressive 4-0 win away to top four rivals Aston Villa, with goals from James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min and Timo Werner capping off an excellent second half display.

It summed up just how devastating Tottenham can be when operating at their imperious attacking best, something which Postecoglou himself alluded to when reacting to the match afterwards.

“The whole game I was really pleased with,” said Postecoglou on Spurs' win over Villa. "The way we handled the whole day, to be honest. Obviously we knew it was a significant game and a tough venue, good opponent, the atmosphere here behind their team. The first half we did well to make them work hard more than anything else. They had to try and contain us and the threats they had we snuffed out.

“I got a sense towards the back end of the first half that they were beginning to already tire a little bit. That was the message at half-time – just persevere, stay calm, play our football, maintain our intensity, which was going to be important."

An intriguing aspect of the match was January signing Radu Dragusin coming in for Micky van de Ven, after the Dutchman was hauled off with a hamstring injury.

The Romania international held his own in Postecoglou's high line, coming after Spurs put pen to paper on a £25 million deal for Dragusin from Genoa.

Radu Dragusin impressing in Tottenham training

Speaking to Fanatik, agent Florin Manea has shared some interesting background on the 22-year-old's time at Tottenham so far. Indeed, as per Manea, Dragusin has been impressing in Tottenham training and treats every single session like it's a proper match.

“They had a well-laid plan," said Manea on Dragusin and the club's intention on using him.

"He had to wait his turn and help his team. It was natural, because the two centre-backs played very well together and it was hard to take them out. From one point of view, it wasn’t normal to take them out.

“I was talking to someone at the club and he told me he’s training exceptionally well. You can’t blame him. Training is like a match for Radu. That’s what we’ve been aiming for for years. The way you train is the way you play.”

Newcastle can complete their midfield by signing 3rd Brazilian superstar

Newcastle United's heavy spending under the Saudi PIF could be about to continue in the summer, with the Magpies needing to increase their squad depth.

The club will already be looking to strengthen the centre-back department after the long-term injury suffered by Sven Botman, with the Dutchman ruled out for up to nine months after his ACL surgery.

goncalo-inacio-sven-botman-newcastle-transfer-premier-league

Injuries have left Eddie Howe's side depleted in multiple areas, with other players such as Joelinton and Callum Wilson spending multiple months on the sidelines.

The club have often been light in midfield, with the club targeting another Brazilian to add to the duo of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton who already ply their trade at St James' Park.

Newcastle interested in another Brazilian midfielder

According to Italian outlet Tutto Atalanta, the Magpies are interested in signing 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Serie A outfit Atalanta.

The youngster has made 27 appearances in the league this season, scoring on five occasions, including a brilliant header in the 3-2 defeat against Lazio earlier this campaign.

The former Salernitana midfielder has emerged as a potential option for Howe's side this summer, but any deal would be a costly one for the Magpies.

Indeed, it's thought that the Toon are willing to bid £34m to secure the services of one of the Italian club's star performers from this campaign.

Atalanta midfielder Ederson

It's not just the price Howe's side needs to worry about, with multiple other sides such as Atlético Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur also credited with an interest in the Atalanta sensation.

Despite any price tag and competition from elsewhere, the Brazilian would be an unbelievable piece of business for the Magpies, with his stats this season better than current Newcastle midfielders Joelinton and Guimaraes.

How Ederson compares to Guimaraes and Joelinton

When delving into the trio's stats, they all complement each other well – with Ederson potentially being the perfect fit alongside his compatriots in the centre of the Magpies' midfield.

The three Brazilians all have very similar playstyles, all of them enjoying the attacking and defensive side of the game as reflected by their stats per 90 in the Serie A and Premier League this season.

As seen in the table above, all three of the players are effective at both ends of the pitch, with a midfield trio of Joelinton, Guimaraes and Ederson a very exciting prospect.

The current Atalanta man comes out on top for most blocks and tackles per 90, but whilst trailing Joelinton for most shots per game, he has the highest goal tally of the players – with Ederson more clinical than the one-time centre-forward.

Ederson in action.

Although the club may face stiff competition from sides all over Europe for his signature, the Magpies must work tirelessly to convince the 24-year-old to move to St James' Park this summer. Indeed his array of progressive and passing makes him seem like a player who is simply tailor-made for Premier League life.

He would be the missing piece in Howe's midfield puzzle, with Ederson potentially allowing the club to edge closer to a European push whilst also providing needed depth in the centre of the field.
