Crystal Palace could land Eze replacement in PL ace who’s a "joy to watch"

Crystal Palace became one of the most entertaining teams to watch anywhere in the country towards the end of the Premier League season this year, scoring for fun and punishing the 'big six' home and away.

Under new boss Oliver Glasner, the South Londoners looked as if they would have reached the European places if the season hadn't come to an end, and while the Austrian deserves plenty of credit, his ideas were executed by a squad full of brilliant talents.

Players like Adam Wharton, Michael Olise, and Eberechi Eze have been spectacular under the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss, although their impressive performances have led to stories about their potential departure, especially in the latter's case.

That said, if the Eagles do lose the former Queens Park Rangers star this summer, they could quickly replace him with another serious talent, according to recent murmurings.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to reports from Spain earlier this week, Crystal Palace are one of several clubs interested in signing Arsenal's highly regarded midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.

Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal

Alongside Palace, the story names Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Everton and Nottingham Forest as the teams keen to land the Englishman.

While this extra competition is far from ideal, the good news is that the story claims the Hale End graduate is available for as little as €25m, which converts to just £21m.

It might be a challenging transfer to get over the line, but if the South Londoners are set to lose Eze in the summer, they could do a lot worse than replacing him with the Gunners ace.

How Smith Rowe compares to Eze

Now, it's not really possible to compare Smith Rowe to Eze this season, nor is it really fair, as a couple of years' worth of injuries have seen him lose his place in the Arsenal team, meaning he's played just 474 minutes of first-team football this season – in which he's provided two assists – while the Palace man has played 2284 minutes.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.

However, as the Eagles' dynamic midfielder has enjoyed his best season at Selhurst Park this year, we can compare that to the Gunners ace's best season in red and white, which came back in 2021/22.

During that campaign, the "special talent," as Jamie Carragher described him, scored 11 goals and provided two assists in just 2176 first-team minutes. This means he managed to maintain an average of a goal involvement every 167 minutes, which is genuinely impressive for someone who was 21 years old at the time.

In comparison, the Eagles' Greenwich-born star scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 2284 minutes this season, giving him a slightly better average of a goal involvement every 134 minutes – but he's four years older.

Moreover, they're pretty close again when comparing some of the Croydon-born gem's underlying numbers from that season to Eze's from this year.

Ultimately, if Glasner is set to lose Eze in the summer, signing Smith Rowe for £21m as a replacement wouldn't be the worst idea. In fact, it might be a rather good one.

He hasn't been able to play a full season of football for some time, but the last time he did, he was a "joy to watch", per Mikel Arteta, and if there is anyone who could bring that joy back out of him, it's the Austrian who has already transformed Selhurst Park this year.

Indian government set to give BCCI green signal to move IPL to UAE

It is understood a formal letter from the government is expected on Friday

IPL 2020 is set to take place in the UAE from September 19 to November 10•BCCI

The Indian government is set to give the BCCI permission to move the 2020 IPL to the UAE. ESPNcricinfo understands that different wings of the government, including Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs, have given the nod for the tournament to be shifted outside India as the country is coping with a high surge of Covid-19 cases that have crossed the 2-million mark.Although both BCCI and IPL have not made a comment yet, it is understood a formal letter from the government is expected to be sent on Friday.ALSO READ: Rigorous testing, restricted movement, one team per hotel, in IPL SOPsOn Wednesday, the IPL conducted a meeting with the franchises to seek their views on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) along with questions, including the travel arrangements for players and support staff, the necessary testing protocols and the quarantine process before and after the teams land in the UAE.Breach the bubble and face the penaltyThe IPL made it absolutely clear to franchises that any stake holder – be it a team member or owner – breaching the biosecure bubble would be penalised as per the tournament’s code of conduct although it did not exactly specify the penalty itself.”Breach of any Bio-Secure Environment protocols by players and team support staff will be punishable under the IPL Code of Conduct Rules,” the IPL said in the draft SOP document spanning 16 pages, titled “Overview of Health & Safety Protocols during IPL 2020 Season”.According to the protocols, team members can leave the bubble only “under exceptional circumstances, e.g. hospital visits for scans,” but with “prior” permission from the IPL Medical Manager, a new position created due to the pandemic. “In such cases, special arrangements will be made to ensure minimal contact with other personnel outside the Bio-Secure Environment,” the document said.Franchises to appoint a team doctorEvery franchise would need to appoint a team doctor, who would be responsible for implementing all medical guidelines. The IPL has also recommended the franchises get the “medical and travel history” of every team member since March 1, information it has said should be obtained two weeks before flying out to the UAE. “This will be done via an online questionnaire along with a daily temperature logging and symptom checker going live 2 weeks before the team’s assembly,” it said in the SOP document. The IPL has also proposed teams should only depart for the UAE from August 20 with minimum squads and ideally on charter flights. Another thing that will be compulsory for team members is wearing a “triple layered mask” in public places. The IPL has already put up a rigorous testing process in place with mandatory multiple tests before they start training. This would also include having a six-day quarantine period upon landing in the UAE. In addition to the test upon landing at the airport in the UAE, all team members would undergo three further tests – on days one, three and six after arriving. Only once the results of all tests come out negative can team members meet within the bubble, but would need to wear masks while following social-distancing norms.Enter ShycocanAll eight teams would also need to stay separately. “Team members must be allotted rooms in a separate wing of the hotel that has a separate centralised air conditioning (AC) unit than the rest of the hotel,” the IPL said.Teams meetings, the IPL has said, should be conducted in open spaces as far as possible. Considering spectators would not be allowed for the matches, the IPL has said teams should not be confined in the designated dressing rooms and can spread across “vacant areas” in the ground. To mitigate the risk of Covid-19 at the venue, the IPL has recommended the use of Scalene Hypercharge Corona Canon (Shycocan), “a device that has the ability to neutralise 99.9% of the coronavirus that might be floating in the air in closed spaces.”On match days, team members would need to have their temperature checked, and during and after the game team members have been discouraged to engage in celebrations involving any body contact including “handshakes.”Owners/families to undergo seven-day quarantine if protocol breachedAs far as team owners and families of team members are concerned, the IPL has said the medical guidelines would apply to them, too, including the testing and social-distancing protocols. Owners and family members who are not part of the team bubble would not be allowed on the team bus to the ground.Owners and families who will be inside the team bubble from the beginning are also “not permitted” to meet people outside the bubble. Failing to follow the protocol would mean a week-long quarantine. They will also have to “return two negative PCR tests on Day 6 and Day 7, to be allowed to re-enter the Bio-Secure Environment.”

Shane Watson lauds Chennai Super Kings' 'world-class leaders' for backing him during IPL 2019

“In every other team that I’ve been in, I may have been dropped a couple of games before I got the runs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad”

Shane Watson flays a shot through the off side•BCCI

Shane Watson has praised the Chennai Super Kings’ “world-class leaders” for showing faith in him through a difficult IPL season in 2019, saying the franchise stuck by him and showed confidence when his batting form was a far cry from the highs of the 2018 season.Watson was one of five Super Kings players to feature in each of their 17 matches last season, eventually ending up with 398 runs at an average of 23.41 and a strike rate of 127.56. After his first ten innings, Watson had made only two 30-plus scores, until he made a 53-ball 96 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad for his first half-century of the tournament. It was still an up-and-down season, though, as in the next four innings, he couldn’t get past 10 before ending the season with two more fifties, including an 80 in the final against the Mumbai Indians where he nearly won the Super Kings the title.”The 2018 season was one of my better seasons, it wasn’t just the final [where Watson made a match-winning century],” Watson said on Nabeel Hashmi’s YouTube show, in reference to his 555 runs in 15 innings in 2018. Hashmi is the head of player acquisitions at the Quetta Gladiators, Watson’s team in the Pakistan Super League.”But last year, certainly CSK stuck with me through thick and thin. In every other team that I’ve been in, I may have been dropped a couple of games before I got the runs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Just them backing me, knowing my next few good innings were around the corner, [was amazing]. Only world-class leaders will really stick by and have the confidence to do that, given the calibre of the players we’ve got.”That was a great learning for me as well, to be honest, to show that if you believe in someone, you believe in their ability, because you’ve seen what they’ve been able to do time and time again and that they will come good at some stage. It worked out well as I was able to contribute, not in the final (laughs), I got run out in the last over (laughs), but up until then, I got as close.”Watson has been among the most prolific T20 cricketers in the world, and arguably one of the all-time IPL greats. Having started off as the Rajasthan Royals’ talisman, he then had a stint with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, before being picked up by the Super Kings as 36-year-old in 2018.”CSK had full faith in me, they’re an incredible franchise to play against,” Watson said. “When I played for Royals against Chennai, I always admired Stephen Fleming, and MS [Dhoni] as well, the way he carried himself on and off the field. To be able to play at CSK and experience the way the franchise is run incredibly well from top-down was a very special experience. I do feel fortunate to have this part of my career of the IPL in the last few years, to play for a franchise that looks after everyone so unbelievably well.” The Super Kings have had to deal with various issues in the lead up to this IPL. Thirteen members of their contingent, including two cricketers, were tested positive for Covid-19, which resulted in an extended quarantine period. But as one of the world’s foremost T20 freelancers, Watson feels his experience in switching on after not playing regularly, and the overall experience other squad members, will come handy in dealing with a sudden restart.”I’ve sort of been away playing T20 tournaments on and off for the last four years or so,” he said. “I have more of an understanding [now] but still it’s a challenge to be able to get your skills up. Having an experienced team means your players have more understanding of being able to get their skills to execute under pressure from game one. That is why we believe we’ve got a great chance of having a great year because of the quality of players and the experience we’ve got. We’ve got more chance of not making many mistakes trying to get up to speed as quickly as we possibly can.”

Celtic keen on signing "clinical" star in possible Idah repeat

Celtic have just under three months left to improve their squad before the summer transfer window, which officially opens on Friday, slams shut at the end of August.

The Hoops ended the 2023/24 campaign with two pieces of silverware added to the cabinet as they won the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup.

It was a solid return to the dugout at Parkhead for Brendan Rodgers, who replaced Ange Postecoglou last summer, as the Northern Irish boss ensured that the club's dominance in the league continued for a third straight year.

The former Leicester City boss may, however, now look to push on and achieve more in Europe after a dismal campaign in the Champions League.

Celtic finished rock bottom of their group, below Lazio, Feyenoord, and Atletico Madrid, and could hope for more success in the new structure next term, which will see them play eight games against eight different teams – half at Parkhead and half way – in the league phase to qualify for the knockouts.

Rodgers could now dip into the market to improve his squad in order to push on and achieve better results in Europe, and the Scottish giants are already reportedly looking to add a new number nine to the team.

Celtic's interest in Championship star

According to the Bristol Post, the Hoops are one of a number of teams interested in a possible swoop to sign Bristol City centre-forward Tommy Conway.

Rodgers is eyeing up a potential deal to sign the Scotland international to bolster his attacking options in the final third, but is set to face competition to land his signature.

The report claims that Glasgow rivals Rangers and Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keen on the young marksman ahead of next season.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

It does not, however, state how much the Robins are set to demand for his services this summer, with his contract currently set to expire next year.

The Bristol Post reveals that the Championship side are open to offers for the 21-year-old attacker as they do not want to risk losing him for a small compensation fee in 2025.

It states that Rangers and Celtic would only have to pay £300k in compensation if they swooped to sign Conway when his contract expires next summer.

Rodgers could now repeat the blinder he played with the signing of Adam Idah in January by securing a deal for the Bristol City ace, whether that is in the current window or for £300k next year.

Celtic's Adam Idah masterclass

The Scottish giants sealed a late swoop to snap up the Ireland international on loan from English Championship side Norwich City on deadline day at the start of February earlier this year.

Rodgers plucked the 6 foot 3 marksman up from the second tier of football in England and it turned out to be a masterclass from the Northern Irish boss.

The Canaries academy graduate hit the ground running in Scotland and proved himself to be a lethal goalscorer in the Premiership in his short time with the Bhoys.

Idah had scored six goals in 28 Championship appearances for Norwich, starting 12 of those games, during the first half of the season, and outperformed his xG (5.83) in the process.

He carried that finishing quality over to the Premiership with a return of eight goals from 6.86 xG. Of players at Celtic during the second half of the campaign, only Matt O'Riley (18 goals from 14.86 xG) overperformed his expected tally by more than the Yellows loanee.

As you can see in the table above, Idah was more prolific than Kyogo Furuhashi in the Scottish top-flight as he found the back of the net more frequently and efficiently.

These statistics show that the loan signing was a huge success for the Hoops, which was backed up by his winning goal in the SFA Cup final against Rangers at Hampden Park in his last appearance.

Rodgers could now repeat that trick by dipping back into the Championship market to seal a deal for Conway ahead of the Gers and Wolves this summer.

Why Tommy Conway could be Adam Idah 2.0

Much like Idah, Conway is a young centre-forward with room to grow and improve, which means that the Bhoys boss could work to develop him on the training ground.

At the age of 21, the Bristol City starlet, who was once dubbed "clinical" by Statman Dave, would come in as a long-term signing as well as a player who has the quality to make an immediate impact on the pitch.

Tommy Conway celebrates for Bristol City.

The big difference, however, would be that the Scottish youngster would come in on a permanent deal, rather than a loan, and this would give the boss more time to improve the right-footed ace.

The talented whiz is in the Scotland squad for Euro 2024 this summer and that could give supporters, and the club, an opportunity to see how he performs on one of the biggest stages, to see if he would be up to the task of leading the line at Parkhead.

Conway's form in the Championship for the Robins this season does, however, suggest that the potential is there for him to be even better than Idah for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, the 6 foot 1 star outperformed his xG by more than the Irishman did for the Canaries, which shows that the finishing quality is there for him to be ruthless in front of goal in a Hoops shirt.

This shows that the club could repeat the blinder they played with the Yellows forward as they could land another impressive, young, finisher from the English second tier to light up the Premiership next season.

Liverpool ready to pay £125,000-a-week to bring "quality" player to Anfield

As the Arne Slot era begins at Liverpool, it is clear that FSG are eager to give their manager significant backing in the transfer market with the Reds making moves for some of Europe's top talents.

Liverpool set for busy summer in the transfer market

As is common for any team undergoing a massive transition in the dugout, Liverpool are also set to bring a slew of fresh faces to Anfield this summer.

£27m release clause: Slot eyeing Liverpool swoop for the next Firmino

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 14, 2024

The latest rumours have seen the likes of Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo linked with a move to Merseyside. The Japanese winger is said to be available for a fee of just over £50million, a figure not unreasonable for a club of Liverpool's stature.

Also heavily linked with a transfer to Liverpool is Portuguese defender Goncalo Inacio. The 22-year-old currently plies his trade at Sporting CP, however could be set for a move to England this summer.

Goncalo Inacio in action for Sporting Lisbon

With a defender clearly high on the Reds' list of priorities this summer, the Premier League side are now stepping up their pursuit of a highly rated European centre back.

Reds set to offer bumper deal for top target

As first reported by Caught Offside, Liverpool look ready to put in a massive offer in their pursuit of Lille defender Leny Yoro. The outlet claims that the Reds are set to put a weekly wage of £125,000 per week on the table in order to secure one of their top targets this summer.

This latest development follows the previous day's news that Liverpool had seen their initial bid of £42million rejected by the French side. It is believed that an offer in the region of £50million will be required in order to tempt the 18-year-old away from his current club.

Man Utd transfer target Leny Yoro in Ligue 1 action for Lille.

The Reds are said to face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain for Yoro's signature. Putting a wage offer on the table this early into the window could be what helps the Merseyside outfit win the race for the highly coveted teenager.

Yoro made 32 league appearances for Lille last season as the French side finished fourth in Ligue 1. The defender also featured heavily during his team's Europa Conference League campaign. Whilst they were eventually knocked out by Aston Villa, Lille made a good account of themselves in the competition, taking the Midlands outfit all the way to a penalty shootout.

Speaking prior to the first leg at Villa Park, Lille boss Paulo Fonseca sang the praises of Yoro, telling the press: "I believe Leny in the next year will be at one of the best clubs in Europe. He started here at 16 with us. He is very ambitious, but very disciplined.

Lille's Leny Yoro in action

"He grew a lot but he is a kid with a big maturity, with big quality. He's very focused, very concentrated, he wants to learn every day and I have no doubt in modern football he will be one of the best central defenders in the world."

Whilst the race for Yoro's signature looks set to be one of the fiercest of the summer, Liverpool may have just edged in front of their European rivals by offering the teenager a salary that may prove too good to turn down.
