Personal terms done: Senior Chelsea player agrees £10m-a-year deal to leave

Chelsea are set to lose one of their senior players this summer after he agreed terms on a lucrative exit from the club, it has emerged.

Chelsea busy ahead of new season

With the Premier League season kicking off in just over a week’s time, Enzo Maresca’s side is still taking shape at Stamford Bridge.

So far, the only signings over the age of 20 to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer have been Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (who joined from Leicester City in a deal worth £30m), Tosin Adarabaiyo on a free transfer and goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who signed from Villarreal.

They kick off their season against Manchester City in just under a fortnight, having fallen to a 4-2 defeat against the reigning Champions to round off a dismal pre-season tour that also included a loss to Celtic and a draw with League One side Wrexham.

The Blues are expected to be busy in the transfer market right up until the transfer deadline of August 30th, with a new striker among the positions that need filling at Stamford Bridge. However, Maresca will have to make do without one of his predecessor’s favourite players.

"Priceless" Chelsea man agrees exit

That comes as midfielder Conor Gallagher has agreed to leave Chelsea this summer, with the Cobham graduate opting to move to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid. Gallagher captained Chelsea for much of the 2023-24 season, starting 37 games for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and impressing in the process. After one particular win over Crystal Palace, the Argentine dubbed Gallagher “priceless”.

“I think he is a player with a great commitment to the team,” said the Chelsea manager. “He is always trying to compensate in every situation, in offensive and defensive situations. It’s priceless to have a player like him.”

However, he was down to the final 12 months of his deal in west London and had turned down a fresh contract from his boyhood club, which meant that the Blues decided to cash in on him rather than lose him for free.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

And Gallagher has now agreed terms with Spanish giants Atletico ahead of a 40m euro (£33.7m) move to the Spanish capital, which will see him pen a five year deal according to Fabrizio Romano.

As per The Telegraph, his new deal in Spain could see him take home £200,000 a week (£10m per year) including bonuses, which is a significant increase on his previous £50,000 a week deal at Stamford Bridge.

His departure could see Chelsea move for Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley, who is also on the wishlist of Premier League newcomers Southampton and European Champions Atalanta.

Though Chelsea fans will be disappointed to see Gallagher leave, they will be glad that it is to a club outside the Premier League, with the midfielder having previously been linked to Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Tottenham.

Tests and assessments on the cards as India and England do ODI battle in T20 World Cup year

The series isn’t without context, as there are World Cup Super League points up for grabs

Deivarayan Muthu22-Mar-20217:01

Will the toss be decisive in the ODIs? And, Rahul or Pant? Or both?

Big pictureIn the year of the T20 World Cup and the inaugural World Test Championship final, most bilateral ODI series are expected to fly under the radar and this India-England series is no different. After being close to their full-strength in the T20I leg of the India tour, England will be without three of their 2019 World Cup heroes – Joe Root (rested), Jofra Archer (injured) and Chris Woakes (rested) – for the three-ODI series. It’s not an entirely context-free series, though, with World Cup Super League points up for grabs. This is a chance for England to take their first steps towards prepping for their 50-over World Cup defence in 2023 in India and test out the likes of Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Liam Livingstone and Reece Topley, who didn’t feature in the T20I series at all. In the absence of Root, their second-highest scorer behind Eoin Morgan in ODIs, England need to choose between Ali, Billings, Livingstone and Ben Stokes for the No. 3 spot.Livingstone, who is uncapped in ODI cricket, looks a decent bet, having opened for Lancashire and more recently for the Perth Scorchers in their run to the Big Bash League final. But then again, England could bump Stokes up to No. 3 and slip in Billings as a finisher, something that Dinesh Karthik suggested on during the T20I series.Related

Matt Parkinson, Livingston’s Lancashire team-mate, has been in England’s bubble since January for the subcontinent tour of Sri Lanka and India, but hasn’t got a game yet. Sure, Parkinson is a legspinner who doesn’t have too many attacking variations like Adil Rashid, but is he good enough to be England’s second spinner?Likewise, Kuldeep Yadav has got very limited game-time since the last IPL in the UAE – eight matches to be precise, including a tour game in Sydney. Yadav hasn’t played together with fellow wristspinner Yuzvendra Chahal since Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow picked them apart when England and India last met in this format, in World Cup match at Edgbaston.Since then, MS Dhoni has retired from international cricket and Kedar Jadhav has been axed from the set-up. The absence of a Jadhav-like player – a batsman who can pitch in with the ball – proved a thorny issue for India in Australia. The selectors and the team management have addressed it by bringing Washington Sundar and Krunal Pandya into the mix. Hardik Pandya bowled short, sharp spells in the T20Is, but India may manage him more carefully as far as the longer formats are concerned in a T20 World Cup year.Suryakumar Yadav, who made stellar contributions with the bat in the T20Is and impressed Virat Kohli with his “X-factor”, could be the latest entrant in India’s middle-order roulette in ODI cricket.Form guideIndia: WLLLL

In the spotlightT Natarajan’s ability to nail yorkers, often on demand, makes him a compelling white-ball prospect, but this ODI series and the following IPL will be a test of his fitness more than anything else. Having emerged from a tennis-ball background, Natarajan hadn’t played as much with the cricket ball on the bounce as he did in 2020-21. R Ashwin revealed on his YouTube channel that the left-arm seamer had a tibia issue on his knee during the Australia tour and has since returned to the side after undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.Sam Curran batted as low as No. 9 in the T20I series decider, with Morgan putting it down to a tactical move to perhaps break up the bevy of left-handers in the England line-up. On the whole, Sam Curran was under-utilised by Morgan – both with ball and ball. He got to bat in two other innings, scoring 3 and 6* from No. 7, and got to bowl just ten overs in five outings. In the absence of Archer and Woakes, Sam – or his elder brother Tom Curran – could potentially be given greater responsibility in the ODIs.Team newsIn the deciding T20I on Sunday, India left KL Rahul out to “bring in a good balance with bat and ball”. He could miss out again if they lean towards a sixth-bowling option for the ODI series opener. Kohli has also confirmed that Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan would start the ODI series as openers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is set to lead the seam attack in what will be his fourth ODI since the 2019 World Cup.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 KL Rahul/Krunal Pandya/Washington Sundar, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal/Kuldeep Yadav, 11 T NatarajanMorgan hasn’t guaranteed a return for Ali and if he doesn’t make the cut, Livingstone may make his ODI debut on Tuesday. Billings, who has excelled as a finisher since his return to the ODI team in 2020, is likely to play his first match of the tour.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Ben Stokes, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Sam Billings, 7 Moeen Ali/Liam Livingstone, 8 Sam Curran/Tom Curran, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Reece Topley, 11 Mark WoodT Natarajan, Washington Sundar, Krunal Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav tune up for the ODI series opener•PTI

Pitch and conditionsThe MCA Stadium in Pune has traditionally rolled out pitches that favour batsmen. The venue has hosted only four ODIs so far, with 300 having been breached thrice. The last time England faced India in Pune, Jadhav and Kohli cracked centuries to hunt down 351 in January 2017. The weather is expected to be fine for the duration of the match. All three ODIs will be played behind closed doors.Stats and trivia Stokes is set to play his first ODI since his starring role in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s. Both India and England come into this series on the back of 2-1 ODI series defeats at the hands of Australia. Among teams that have played at least ten ODIs since the last World Cup, India have the poorest record in the powerplay with the ball: six wickets at an average of an average of 144.16 and economy rate of 5.76. During this period, England’s bowlers have taken 17 wickets in the powerplay at an average of just under 23 in nine games. Since 2010, India have lost only three bilateral ODI series at home. They had suffered defeats to Pakistan in 2012, South Africa in 2015 and more recently to Australia in 2019.Quotes”Even though we didn’t pick up the trophy, we learned a huge amount. It has been an extremely productive tour so far in white-ball cricket. The biggest picture always being the World Cup in both white-ball formats. You don’t always have to win every series in order to win a World Cup. You continuously need to get better, need to be tested as a side, need to fail in order to learn. That involves losing, which isn’t fun, but it is part of the journey.”
“Along the way, scheduling and workload is something everyone will have to be very aware of and keep an eye out for, especially in today’s day and age where you just don’t know where restrictions might come in.”

No rebote, a zaga afastou.

Wolves could land dream signing for Cunha in deal for "remarkable" PL star

Wolverhampton Wanderers have finally sold Pedro Neto after months and months of transfer speculation.

The Portuguese winger leaves for a fee in the region of £54m, joining fellow Premier League side Chelsea. While the loss will create a gap to be filled by Gary O’Neil, the financial injection provided by the sale will give him some flexibility when it comes to sourcing his replacement.

Could the Old Gold raid a current Premier League in order to secure his replacement? As it looks like O’Neil is targeting a swoop for a Brentford winger…

Wolves eyeing move for Premier League star

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Wolves are chasing a move for Brentford gem Yoane Wissa before the end of the current transfer window.

The 27-year-old could well be allowed to leave the Bees considering they have completed the signing of Fabio Carvalho from Liverpool, and his positional adaptability could be a bonus for O’Neil.

Yoane Wissa in action for Brentford

With just two years left on his contract, Brentford boss Thomas Frank may believe this is the best time to secure a decent fee for the player.

Will O’Neil strike? Only time will tell. If he does, Wissa could be a dream capture for someone like Matheus Cumha.

Yoane Wissa’s Brentford statistics

The DR Congo international signed for the Bees following a productive stint in France, where he registered 54 goal contributions – 37 goals and 17 assists – in 128 matches for FC Lorient.

He has managed to recapture this sort of form in the Premier League, netting seven or more top-flight goals in each of his three seasons with Brentford, achieving 12 last term.

Yoane Wissa scores late on for Brentford vs Crystal Palace.

The winger also created seven big chances, averaged 0.7 key passes per game, and grabbed three assists, showing that he is keen on creating chances for others.

This could benefit Cunha next season. The Brazilian finished as the club’s top scorer with 14 goals last term, but with some better service, this number could found the back of the net more frequently.

When compared to his peers in the Premier League last season, Wissa ranked in the top 11% for crosses into the penalty area per 90 (0.15), while also ranking in the top 13% for ball recoveries per 90 (3.53), suggesting that not only does the winger regularly deliver balls into the opposition box, but is keen on winning the ball back as often as possible.

With Wissa coming into the starting XI next season, operating on either the right or left wing, it could be a masterstroke of a signing by O’Neil.

Moving on players was always inevitable this summer, especially having to balance the books, but securing £40m for Max Kilman and now £54m for Neto is excellent business.

Former Wolves defender Max Kilman

If a deal for Wissa could be struck before the end of the month, the club might not feel the departure of Neto too hard, that’s for sure.

Hailed as “remarkable” by Frank for his displays last term, Wolves could sign a Premier League star in the 27-year-old and provide their centre-forward with more opportunities to find the back of the net.

Chelsea in talks for £162k-per-week striker after missing out on Omorodion

Chelsea are in ongoing talks over signing a £162,000-per-week striker after missing out on a deal for Atletico Madrid's Samu Omorodion.

Chelsea talks to sign Samu Omorodion collapse after deal agreed

The 20-year-old's move to Stamford Bridge looked like a foregone conclusion at one stage, with Fabrizio Romano even giving his famous "here we go" to the transfer.

Omorodion appeared all set to sign a seven-year contract at Chelsea in a deal worth around £35 million, and the striker was also set for a medical.

However, unexpected chaos then ensued. Spanish journalist Marcos Benito claimed that Chelsea attempted to buy 50 per cent of the Spaniard's image rights, an act which Omorodion took as disrespect, ultimately souring relations between both parties with there being no hope of an agreement now.

“Chelsea have attempted to buy 50% of Omorodion," said Benito.

"Option rejected by the player and this breaks any future offer. He sees it as a lack of respect. Atleti want to bring Joao Félix into the deal, but Maresca sees signing a striker as a priority.”

Following this statement, Chelsea are in fact attempting to re-sign Joao Felix and remain in talks to get a deal done. The move will also be crucial in determining Conor Gallagher's future, as the England international was meant to join Atletico Madrid after Omorodion sealed his move to Chelsea.

Chelsea are seemingly trying to resurrect the transfer domino by swapping Omorodion for Felix, and Gallagher will be hoping to have his future resolved as soon as possible after he even flew to Spain for a medical with Atletico (Fabrizio Romano).

Amid this rather dramatic turn of events, Enzo Maresca remains keen on bringing in a new number nine. One of the biggest transfer stories of this summer could still unfold at Stamford Bridge, with reports still refusing to rule out Victor Osimhen joining Chelsea and Romelu Lukaku going to Napoli.

Chelsea negotiating Victor Osimhen deal after Omorodion failure

According to HITC, Chelsea are in ongoing talks over a deal for Osimhen, which would see Lukaku reunite with Antonio Conte at Napoli.

They claim Maresca's side have turned their attention back towards Osimhen after missing out on Omorodion and Chelsea refuse to rule out signing the Nigerian striker who's been one of Serie A's most prolific goalscorers in recent years.

Thus far, Chelsea are still some way off meeting Napoli's demands for their £162,000-per-week star player, but Osimhen has made it crystal clear to Aurelio De Laurentiis and co that he wants to leave the Diego Armando Maradona stadium.

Lukaku, meanwhile, has also informed Chelsea that he's eager to join Conte back in Serie A.

Michael Neser, the Australian seamer, has signed a new two-year contract extension that will keep him at Glamorgan until at least the end of the 2023 season, joining compatriot Marnus Labuschagne as the club’s overseas players for next year.Labuschagne, Neser’s Queensland team-mate, has one year remaining on his current contract. Neser, meanwhile has been a revelation since joining the Welsh county this year after his planned stint at Surrey in 2020 was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. In just four LV= Insurance County Championship matches, Neser has taken 19 wickets at an average of 14.89, His match figures of 7 for 99, which included 4 for 53 in Lancashire’s second innings, was instrumental in Glamorgan’s six-wicket victory in Cardiff early last month. He also took a five-wicket haul in the draw with Yorkshire in May. The 31-year-old Neser has 222 career first-class wickets at an average of 24.76 and he has scored 2,010 runs at 25.12.”I’ve absolutely loved playing in Wales this season and it was a no-brainer to commit my future to the club,” Neser said. “When I was first approached by Glamorgan, Marnus said what a fantastic place this was and how welcoming the people were and that’s exactly how I’ve found it.”As a team we’ve played some really good cricket this season and there’s plenty of young talent which bodes well for the future. Hopefully, I can bring my experience to the table to help them out and continue to contribute to more wins so we can push for silverware.”Mark Wallace, director of cricket at Glamorgan – who sit fourth in Group Three of the Championship – described the signing as “fantastic news for the club”.”He is a world-class cricketer and a real role model to our younger players who will only get better with him around the dressing room,” Wallace said. “Through him and Marnus re-signing over the last year, it shows that we are not only a very welcoming club but also a very ambitious one who can attract top players.”

Head coach Mark Boucher has accepted “a massive amount of responsibility,” for South Africa losing eight out of their 11 series in his time in charge so far but believes the national men’s team is “on the right path.”Speaking after their 1-3 defeat to Pakistan in the recently concluded T20I series, their second against this opposition in this format this year, Boucher cautioned against knee-jerk reactions to South Africa’s poor form, which has seen them win only one trophy out of a possible six this summer.”I take a massive amount of responsibility and I should. I don’t shy away from it,” Boucher said. “I am hurt, I am extremely hurt at the moment, as is the rest of the management and coaching staff. We put a lot of hard work and effort into this. But there’s no panic from me yet because I do understand that we have been given some trying circumstances over the last period of time and we will continue to put in hard work.”Related

A problem of plenty at the top, and plenty of problems elsewhere

South Africa were without a core group of players for both T20I series against Pakistan for reasons beyond Boucher or anyone else in the support staff’s control. In Pakistan, South Africa had to send home members of their Test squad before the T20Is in anticipation of home Tests against Australia, which did not happen. Then, against Pakistan at home, South Africa were without five players who departed for the IPL, based on an agreement between CSA and the BCCI, and captain Temba Bavuma missed the entire series with a hamstring injury. “I am not going to make excuses,” Boucher said. “We’ve still got to try and win with whichever players we put on the park but it has been tough.”Despite that, Boucher was able to see a silver lining. “There have been a lot of positives. With the opportunities that have been given, a couple of guys have come through with flying colours,” he said. “It’s given us a better view of what our depth is like, so I’ve got a fair idea of a larger squad we can look at.”Key South Africa players were not available because of the IPL•BCCI

Now, Boucher hopes to use the winter – which will include a yet-to-be-confirmed tour to the West Indies consisting of two Tests and five T20Is (rescheduled from last year), a white-ball visit to Ireland and a possible trip to Sri Lanka ahead of the T20 World Cup – to distill the bigger group into its strongest components with a focus on major tournaments.”We have to get our squad back together, get all of our players fit and available to play. We always earmarked the West Indian trip as being when our full squad needs to be together,” Boucher said. “Going forward now we need to start looking at the World Cups and start building on a formula we want to play. It’s a matter of getting all the guys together and getting them used to each other and hopefully used to winning a couple of games together.”He acknowledged that South Africa’s results have not been good enough: “I am a guy who wants to win and we haven’t won series which is frustrating for me, the coaching staff and no doubt the public,” he said.Asked if he feels pressure from the mounting scrutiny of his time in charge, which now stands at 18 months with more than two years still to go, Boucher said he trusts in the plans he has put in place.”We’ve stuck to our guns with what we believe is the right way to go about the set-up. We’ve spoken to the players. The players were the ones who originally actually came up with the way that they want to play which is a very nice position for us to be in and we are just going to try and guide them in that direction,” he said. “As I said from the start, there’s a lot of hard work to be done and we are still working very hard in all aspects of our game as well. The pressure is going to be there no matter what. When you get to this level in international sport, you must expect the pressure. If you can’t handle it, then you need to get out of the kitchen. We understand that the public wants to win. We are sticking to our guns.”For now, that means that South Africa are not seeing the next two months as an off season, but a period in which they have to properly prepare themselves for the challenges of the season to come. “I don’t see this little break that we have as any sort of off season. It’s another opportunity for us to get stuck in and really upskill ourselves and get to where we need to be,” Boucher said.
