Their next Lampard & Drogba: Chelsea in talks for late "monster" signing

Chelsea have shuffled their squad pack this summer and are starting to shape up nicely under Enzo Maresca, obliterating Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

Noni Madueke showed Wolves no respect after bagging an emphatic hat-trick in the 6-2 drubbing, with Cole Palmer opening his account before setting the fiery winger up for all three of his strikes.

Having lost their Premier League opener against Manchester City, Chelsea look like they could grow into a force under the Italian tactician, and while Nicolas Jackson and Joao Felix both got on the scoresheet, signing another striker wouldn't go amiss.

Chelsea eyeing one more deal

According to Sky Sports' Dharmeth Sheth, Chelsea are back in talks for Napoli's Victor Osimhen, who is at the centre of discussions with Saudi Pro League team Al Ahli.

Napoli are willing to complete the transaction but Osimhen is demanding a release clause to consider the move, evidently so that he has a clear route back into Europe in the near future.

The 25-year-old has been on Chelsea's radar throughout the summer, however, and a late-stage swoop cannot be ruled out, though the Blues would require him to lower his exorbitant £500k-per-week salary demands.

What Osimhen would bring to Chelsea

Chelsea are at the doorway of a brand new world, and while there has been a lot of noise around BlueCo's scattergun spending, it's actually more streamlined than it might seem, with the bloated squad being trimmed ahead of the transfer deadline at the end of the week.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

Jackson and 18-year-old Marc Guiu make up Maresca's established out-and-out strikers but it's hard to see a world where Osimhen doesn't insinuate himself in the starting line-up from the bat, having plundered 76 goals and 18 assists across 133 fixtures for Napoli and been hailed as "one of the best strikers in the world" by Joao Cancelo.

The Nigeria international endured an injury-affected 2023/24 season that coincided with his side, the defending Serie A champion, slumping to a bleak tenth-place finish, though he still scored 17 goals and added four assists over 32 games (27 starts).

Should the Blues get their mitts on a focal frontman of this calibre, Maresca could be set for a fruitful first year indeed, with creativity and electric players in abundance.

Jackson scored and assisted at Molineux but he is a raw and unpolished product, perhaps finding that competition with one of Europe's pre-eminent sharpshooters could lift his game.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

And anyway, Chelsea could actually find themselves sculpting a dynamic duo to go down in the history books, should Osimhen be welcomed to the fold. Yes, Palmer could turn the 25-year-old into a monster to rival that of Erling Haaland.

Palmer is rather good at football, isn't he? It could prove to be the best £42.5m ever forked out in the world of sport if he continues to thrive as Stamford Bridge's all-powerful talisman, hailed as "one of the best in the world" by Chelsea captain Reece James.

The Manchester City youth product, still only 22, has scored 26 goals from just 48 appearances for Chelsea, but his playmaking ability is equally as remarkable, evidenced by his masterclass in Wolverhampton.

It's got us thinking: could the arrival of Osimhen rebirth one of the Premier League's all-time partnerships in Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba?

Chelsea's next Lampard & Drogba

Ah, the halcyon days. Chelsea have won it all over the past few decades, with Lampard and Drogba two of the most influential players throughout the years of illustrious success.

Ivorian Legen Drogba scored 164 goals for the Londoners, perenially the man for the big occasion. Lampard, one of England's finest midfielders, posted 211 goals (making him Chelsea's record scorer) and 148 assists over 648 matches, with his potency unrivalled by but a smattering of the game's greatest.

Together, they were truly something special, meshing together to bring goals and assists down in lashings, claiming a sizeable collection of silverware on the way.

Palmer is more silky, a bit more crisp in his all-round play than Lampard, who was more versatile and influential across different phases, but both have the tag of elite-level attacking midfielder, and Palmer is only just getting started.

The England international actually ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, and the same for assists, the top 7% for shot-creating actions and the top 6% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, so Osimhen would hardly be starved for service.

To deepen the argument, the Naples-based striker is not just a one-trick pony either, with a redoubtable physical presence, prick-point sharp link-up play and a creative streak that could see him emulate the iconic Drogba.

Described as a "monster" by analyst Raj Chohan, Osimhen is truly one of the world's finest, and now that Chelsea supporters have been given a taste of the kind of frightening attacking talent at their disposal, it's hard to imagine anything other than success, should this final piece of the puzzle be completed.

Ah, the halcyon days indeed – Lampard and Drogba might be a force of the past, but it could be reborn with the signing of Osimhen, who could propel Palmer to heights unimaginable – and that's saying something.

A partida

Mas a vantagem do time maranhense durou exatos 8 minutos.

FINALMENTE SAI O GOL DO SAMPAIO CORRÊA

Southampton’s Samuel Edozie set to join Anderlecht after Rangers collapse

Despite England's transfer window slamming shut, Southampton are reportedly taking full advantage of the open transfer market around some of Europe and are set to show the door to one young player as a result.

Southampton transfer news

Saints endured a hectic end to their summer window, welcoming Maxwel Cornet on loan from West Ham United and Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal in one of their biggest deals of the window to add to the likes of Flynn Downes and Cameron Archer in the process.

Whilst Ramsdale's debut didn't end in victory as Russell Martin's side suffered a 3-1 defeat courtesy of Brentford, the goalkeeper's experience both at the top and bottom of the Premier League should prove to be invaluable.

Martin was quick to praise the arrival of his new shot-stopper too, telling Southampton's official website: “I’m delighted. Bringing in a player like Aaron is a real statement signing for us, so I’m very grateful to ownership and the board for making it happen, especially as so many other clubs were keen to get him.

"Aaron is obviously a very talented goalkeeper, but also an impressive all-round football player, which is clearly important for us with the way we play.

“His reputation speaks for itself, he brings great experience even at what is still a relatively young age at his position and he’s a fantastic character too, who I think will be a wonderful addition for us both on the pitch and in the dressing room."

Worth more than Ramsdale: Southampton missed out on magic Smallbone upgrade

Southampton could live to regret not sealing a deal for this top star.

Following a busy end to the window on the incomings front, however, those at St Mary's look set to grant one player his exit at last. According to Sacha Tavolieri, Anderlecht have reached an agreement to sign Samuel Edozie on loan from Southampton for the rest of the season. Edozie, of course, reportedly saw a deadline-day move to Rangers collapse in frustrating fashion, but now looks set to get his departure.

"Brilliant" Edozie set to get his move

Desperately in need of minutes after failing to start any of Southampton's first three Premier League games, Anderlecht represent the ideal destination for Edozie. The winger can rediscover his best form and set course to reach his potential, before returning to St Mary's with renewed hope of breaking into Martin's starting side and more next summer.

The 21-year-old certainly has his fans too, with U23 scout Antonio Mango dubbing his debut season with the Saints as "brilliant" in the Championship last season.

Despite that "brilliant" start to his debut campaign last time out though, Edozie looks set to be on the move. Still 21 years old, the former Manchester City man is one to watch at Anderlecht and potentially even Southampton, where he could still make an impact next summer and beyond.

> Veja e simule a tabela do Brasileirão

Fast bowler confirms bid for full fitness is back on track after fiery opening gambit at Hove

Paul Edwards13-May-2021

When Jofra Archer last played a first-class match at Hove he was not a World Cup winner nor had he played in an Ashes series. The game took place in September 2018 and was memorable for the final first-class centuries of both Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell. Trott’s hundred satisfied the technicians; Bell’s pleased the aesthetes and brings them comfort still. Archer had played 10 IPL games for Rajasthan Royals and was plainly England’s next big thing. But his four late wickets against Warwickshire hardly disturbed the universe and certainly nobody gave a monkey’s what he did with his fish tank apart, one assumes, from the fish. The age of aquaria had not yet dawned. That era is upon us now, though, and so Archer is perhaps fortunate that he is based in Brighton, where other-worldliness is an asset and where shredding your finger cleaning up after your piscine pets is something that could happen to anyone. Even more than Britain’s metropolises this city is a shrine to the outré and the baroque. Archer is thus an extraordinary cricketer in a city filled with extraordinary people and maybe he enjoys the camouflage, even if such concealment is not always available. The news that he had recovered sufficiently from a right-elbow injury to be named in Sussex’s squad for this game against Kent brought extra photographers and journalists to the County Ground and in the first half an hour of the day we could all see why.In Archer’s third over Daniel Bell-Drummond was beaten for pace and bounce; the catch went very fast to second slip where George Garton made it look laughably easy. Next over, though, Archer over-pitched and Zak Crawley helped himself to four runs past wide mid-on. We settled down for a duel between a couple of England’s Test cricketers, only for it to end two balls later when Crawley could do nothing with sharp lift and movement off a length except nick the ball to Ben Brown.”Usually I bowl to Zak n the [England] nets and I have done that quite a bit,” observed Archer when our day’s cricket was done. “Obviously, you’re never out in the nets so it was good to get him out here, with umpires.”Related

Thereafter, though, the bowler upon whom some Ashes strategies may rest blended into the background of what became a fine day for Sussex. He bowled two spells of four overs and then one of five that was bridged by rain. The speed and steepling bounce will have reassured the selectors but Archer bowled no better than Ollie Robinson, with whom he may yet open England’s bowling in a Test match during this most unpredictable of seasons. Robinson nags at a batsman’s technique much as an abscess might plague the nerves beneath a tooth; extraction is often the inevitable consequence.Such relentless discipline appeals to England’s selectors and Robinson was more responsible than anyone else in Brown’s attack for Sussex dismissing Kent for 145 on a cloud-strewn, shower-threatened day when the decision to bowl first cannot have required much thought. In the over after lunch he bowled Jordan Cox through the narrowest of gates for 24 and then returned in the evening to have Kent’s top scorer, Jack Leaning, taken at slip by Aaron Thomason for 63 when nibbling at a ball outside the off stump. “More of a chomp than a nibble,” observed Sam Keir, Sussex’s Media Executive, a man with a good memory for confectionery. One saw his point. It was a thickish edge.By then, though, Leaning’s studious, three-hour innings had become an exercise in damage limitation. In the morning session he and Cox had piloted their side to 68 for 2 only to see such comparative affluence frittered away by the haemorrhage of five wickets for 42 runs in the afternoon. Cox was the first to go but that misfortune was followed by the loss of three batsmen in the space of 15 balls. Garton took two of the three and may even have benefitted from his irritating habit of mixing many distinctly good balls with occasional dross. The saddest departure was that of 20-year-old Tawanda Muyeye, whose maiden first-class innings lasted just eight balls before Robinson’s third leg-before appeal against him in the same over received a grim assent from David Millns, a decision with which Muyeye could have no complaint. And the debutant had at least got a run to his name, a distinction not shared by Darren Stevens, who flashed at a wide one. The same error was committed a few overs later by Marcus O’Riordan and both edges were taken by Thomason at first slip. The showers returned and Kent took tea on 113 for 7. Jack Carson picked up a couple of cheap wickets to end the innings but even that skill adds to a spinner’s growing reputation. Adil Rashid could tell Carson that.Having been assisted by the relatively dry weather during the bulk of the day, Sussex were helped by the return of bad light when 14.3 overs remained to be bowled. At that stage Brown’s batsmen had reduced the deficit to 94 runs but only for the loss of Tom Haines who feathered a catch behind off Stevens and Thomason, whose booming drive off Nathan Gilchrist was snaffled by O’Riordan at cover point. It was a careless end to what had been a pleasing three sessions for Thomason and his team but Brown would have settled for this state of affairs this morning, when the captain of Sussex arrived at the ground on his scooter and saw a tiny murmuration of starlings feasting on grubs in the wet earth.

Arsenal make 2025 transfer plans as Arteta prepares for Tottenham

Head coach Mikel Arteta, after signing a new three-year contract and committing his future to the club, is now focusing all of his attention on Sunday’s looming North London Derby against Tottenham.

Arteta confirms "great news" for Arsenal ahead of Spurs with injury update

A key player looks ready to feature against Tottenham.

Arteta has a few selection headaches to deal with ahead of tomorrow’s 14:00 kick off, with summer signing Mikel Merino sidelined after a shoulder injury. According to reports, Merino may not return until mid-October at the earliest, so he is certain to be unavailable, while another star midfielder in Declan Rice is also absent through suspension.

Odegaard was expected to miss Tottenham too, but in some good news for Arsenal, Arteta has refused to rule completely him his captain out of their trip to Spurs. Both Gabriel Jesus and Riccardo Calafiori are racing to be fit for Sunday as well, so the Gunners’ injury crisis isn’t as bad as first feared.

However, with both Merino and Rice out, there is a major shortage in Arsenal’s midfield. This has led to suggestions that Arteta could drop Kai Havertz into midfield with new arrival Raheem Sterling potentially playing a false-nine role, so it will be interesting to see how the team is indeed set up.

Meanwhile, Edu and the club’s recruitment team are already said to be working on new signings for next year off the field. Arsenal are believed to be eyeing Benjamin Sesko ahead of 2025, and have apparently already made contact to gain a head-start on their rivals.

Arsenal have also been linked with Jonathan David this week, as one of Ligue 1’s most prolific scorers of the last few seasons will soon be up for grabs at zero cost.

Arsenal open talks with Jonathan David ahead of January swoop

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have opened talks with David’s representatives ahead of a move in January – rather than a pre-contract arrangement which would see him join for free next summer.

The Canadian international is said to have rejected two new contract offers from his current club as he seeks a move away, and it is believed Edu is set to prioritise David’s signing in the winter window.

Canadian striker Jonathan David

Other reports state that Arsenal could tempt David with an offer north of £96,000-per-week, which is surely a real incentive for them to move, considering that salary wouldn’t even put the forward in line with Arteta’s biggest earners.

Called “world class” by ex-Canada manager Iain Hume, the 24-year-old already boasts 153 senior career goals for both club and country combined.

“At his age, to have such a calmness, and a cool head like that? He is a world class player right now,” said Hume in 2022. “That’s a Canadian kid. That’s the realism now. Name more than five/six strikers in the world better than him — I think you’ll struggle.”

Over the next 30 days, Multan is expected to experience temperatures hovering well over 40 degrees, with a predicted high of 44 degrees. A 26-member Pakistan Women contingent will train in these extreme conditions from May 29 to June 22, as part of the team’s preparations for the 50-over Women’s World Cup Qualifier that is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in December. While acknowledging the severity of the conditions, the PCB has said it had few other options but to train in Multan, given numerous challenges including the need to prepare a bio-secure bubble in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic.Historically during the summer months, the PCB has mostly held its camps in the city of Abbottabad, which is located in the hilly Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and experiences relatively milder weather than the lower-altitude regions of the country where temperatures often rise above 45 degrees and occasionally touch 50 degrees. But the venue isn’t seen as being feasible for the creation of a bio-secure bubble.Karachi could have been an option too, but the city is presently facing a surge in Covid-19 cases, while grounds in Central Punjab, according to Urooj Mumtaz, the chair of the PCB’s women’s selection committee, are presently undergoing repair work.”Each venue had its own challenges around the pandemic,” Mumtaz told ESPNcricinfo. “Multan was the only feasible facility available as a package. It has the ground, gym, and accommodation within one block, and it’s easy to maintain the bio-secure bubble there.”But we are conscious and mindful of the extreme weather conditions, and that is why we have scheduled the training sessions to avoid the hottest part of the day. We are starting early in the morning and ending by midday, giving them ample rest in the day, and we’ll start again in the evening.”After the camp concludes, Pakistan Women could return to action after a five-month gap. ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB and SLC are in talks for a potential series in Sri Lanka in July.Pakistan Women’s last international fixture was in Zimbabwe, where they won the first ODI before the remainder of the series was cancelled when Emirates Airlines, the Pakistan team’s carrier, announced it would suspend its operations in the Harare-Dubai route eight days before their scheduled departure. Before that, Pakistan Women had toured South Africa, where they lost the ODI series 3-0, and won the third and final T20I to deny the hosts another series sweep.Since the aborted Zimbabwe tour, Pakistan Women haven’t played any international cricket, but a group of 26 players underwent a skills and fitness camp in Karachi, similar to the one that is being organised in Multan.”We need to understand these challenges especially given the situation with Covid, which changes dramatically every other day. But the board is determined to continue to invest in the women’s game and we make sure our girls remain connected to the game so that they don’t get rusty,” Mumtaz said. “Women’s calendar hasn’t been as busy as the men’s has been so far, so it’s important to keep the girls engaged with the elite panel of coaching staff.”The Multan camp, according to the PCB, will be held in a bio-secure environment, with the players and support staff undergoing pre-arrival Covid-19 tests on Thursday. All those who tested negative are meant to assemble at the National High-Performance Centre in Lahore today and will travel to Multan by road. The players and support staff will be tested upon arrival in Multan and will subsequently go into isolation. Those who test negative will commence training in groups from May 31. The groups will be allowed to train together as units subject to testing negative for a third time on June 4.Players called up for Multan camp: Aliya Riaz, Aiman Anwer, Anam Amin, Ayesha Naseem, Ayesha Zafar, Diana Baig, Fatima Sana, Iram Javed, Javeria Khan, Javeria Rauf, Kainat Imtiaz, Kaynat Hafeez, Maham Tariq, Muneeba Ali, Nahida Khan, Najiha Alvi, Nashra Sandhu, Natalia Pervaiz, Nida Dar, Omaima Sohail, Rameen Shamim, Saba Nazir, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra Amin, Sidra Nawaz, Syeda Aroob Shah.
