Villa wanted "monster" star when Grealish left, now he’s outshining Rogers

Aston Villa are building a squad for the future, with a whole host of talented youngsters staking their claims in the first team this season.

Jhon Duran is showing his worth as an elite goalscorer, having scored four goals already this season in only 131 Premier League minutes, whilst Jacob Ramsey, Ian Maatsen, Lamine Bogarde and Kosta Nedelijkovic all other notable names.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

But one of the best young players who is really showing his importance this season is Morgan Rogers.

The 22-year-old has impressed at the start of this campaign, most notably against Arsenal, despite losing 2-0.

Morgan Rogers vs Arsenal

Villa haven’t particularly been lacking a talisman since a certain Jack Grealish departed, but Rogers is showing shades of the tricky Manchester City star with the way he glides forward with the ball.

Jack Grealish's time at Villa

Jack Grealish left Aston Villa back in 2021 for a fee of £100m, making him the biggest transfer in British football history at the time.

The Englishman made 213 appearances for the Villans, scoring 32 goals, providing 41 assists, and totalling 15,338 minutes played for the club.

Jack Grealish for Aston Villa

His play style was described as “playing in a playground with his schoolmates” by ex-Villa manager, Dean Smith, who waxed lyrical about his balance whilst carrying the ball.

Grealish would mix agility, balance, and end product, often bailing Villa out of trouble, as teams had to double or even triple-team him to stop him.

The 29-year-old has since gone on to make 131 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 14 goals, providing 19 assists in 8,698 minutes played, winning a few Premier Leagues, and a Champions league along the way.

Despite Rogers now having arrived, they may well have missed the boat on a dream replacement for the former club captain.

Emile Smith-Rowe could have replaced Grealish

Back in 2021, when Grealish left the club, Villa were linked with a move for Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe. The Villans had two bids rejected and as a result, were forced to move on to other targets. The likes of Emiliano Buendia and Danny Ings arrived instead.

Buendia has since had cruel luck with injury – that cannot be helped of course – but one does wonder what might have happened if they got a move for Smith Rowe over the line instead.

The highly rated Hale End academy product was described as “dynamic” by one analyst on social media, who praised his technique and aggression when carrying the ball into space, certainly eye-catching qualities.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

This ability to carry the ball, progress, play, and make things happen, is exactly what Villa needed to replace to fill the void of Grealish leaving the club, but a deal did not materialise, and now Smith-Rowe has joined Fulham this summer, for a fee of £27m initial, plus add ons which could take the deal to £34m total.

Since moving to Craven Cottage, he has turned into a “monster” – as Troy Deeney described – and is now even outperforming the aforementioned Rogers.

Whilst Smith-Rowe and Rogers are performing relatively closely in their metrics, the Fulham man has shown more of a completeness to his game, notably scoring two goals and supplying one assist.

Offering progression via passing and carrying, having a high shot volume, creating for himself and others, and also doing the dirty work, winning 2.25 tackles per 90.

Rogers is a different type of player, who can link up really well in tight spaces, drive into space with his lengthy frame, and escape opposition players, but if Villa wanted someone to replace Grealish from all those years ago, Smith-Rowe definitely would have been better option over Buendia.

Jordan Clark, Rikki Clarke lift Surrey after Kyle Jamieson pulls up lame

De Grandhomme resists for Hampshire after Ian Holland top-scores with 58

Jordan Clark and Rikki Clarke stepped up in impressive fashion as Surrey’s undermanned bowling attack reduced Hampshire to 229 for 7 on day one of the LV= Insurance County Championship clash at the Ageas Bowl. The duo grabbed three wickets apiece after Kyle Jamieson was forced off the field after just six overs due to injury.Surrey were also without England batsman Ollie Pope who missed the match due to a thigh strain picked up in Friday’s Vitality Blast defeat by Kent.Rory Burns won the toss and elected to field under gloomy skies but despite the bowling friendly conditions Hampshire held firm, losing only Joe Weatherley in the first session to reach lunch on 62 for 1.But the Surrey seamers were rewarded for some tight and disciplined bowling after the restart as they ripped through the home side’s top order.Veteran former England all-rounder Clarke had bowled well without luck, seeing a regulation slip catch grassed by Jamie Overton when Tom Alsop was on 17, then having a no-ball called against him when Ian Holland was caught by Ryan Patel. But Alsop failed to take advantage of his good fortune when he edged Clark to Jamie Smith behind the stumps for 29.Alsop’s exit brought Nick Gubbins to the crease for the first time as a Hampshire player following his loan move from Middlesex. The left-hander, who will join on a permanent basis at the end of the season following the shock departure of Sam Northeast to Yorkshire on Friday, looked in fine touch with a gorgeous cut shot to the boundary early in his innings.Gubbins then brought up his new side’s hundred with a sumptuous drive down the ground, only to perish when on 17 after his attempt at a cut-shot off Overton was caught behind by Smith.James Vince produced a typically pleasing but brief innings when Clarke, who had been dispatched to the boundary three times by the home skipper, got his revenge when he trapped the elegant right-hander lbw for 16.Holland continued his fine form at the top of the order with his third 50 of the campaign, but became Clark’s third victim when he dragged onto his stumps for 58, reducing the home side to 155 for 5.A fifty-run stand from Colin de Grandhomme and Lewis McManus took Hampshire past the 200-mark before Clark struck again when McManus was caught down the leg-side by Smith for 24.Keith Barker was dismissed without scoring to hand 39-year-old Clarke his third wicket before play was called off for the day due to rain and bad light with Colin de Grandhomme unbeaten on 48 and Felix Organ on 3.

Deeney hails £60k-per-week ace who’s now a "monster" after quitting Arsenal

BBC pundit Troy Deeney has heaped praise on an ex-Gunner who left north London in the summer, with the former Arsenal ace now really impressing at his new club.

Arsenal back to winning ways after 1-0 win away to Tottenham

Manager Mikel Arteta was in spirited mood after his side came away from their trip to Tottenham with all three points on Sunday, not to mention all the North London Derby bragging rights.

£150k-per-week Arsenal star could miss Atalanta with Calafiori and Odegaard

An update has come out of London Colney.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 17, 2024

While Spurs dominated possession and created openings of their own, a resolute Arsenal thwarted Ange Postecoglou’s side, with star defender Gabriel Magalhaes making the home side pay for their lack of cutting edge in the final third.

Gabriel claimed Arsenal’s winner 64 minutes into the contest, rising above all others to thump a close-range header past Guglielmo Vicario from a corner, who was again made to pay for a lack of assurance in dealing with set pieces.

Tottenham failed to fight their way back from only goal of the game, with Arteta praising Arsenal’s derby display, which was made all the more impressive considering they were without a host of first-team players in club captain Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

“The people that we have, I think I already spoke about it during the week, people that are harder, they have thick skin, they love the game and they love winning,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Spurs.

“In order to love the game and win, you have to do a lot of things – sometimes people call them ugly. Enjoying doing those ugly things is a big compliment of this team right now, and when you’re able to normally, you get a good gift.

“We’ve won three years in a row here. I don’t know when’s the last time that this has happened, so that’s a big thing. I think they believe already, we’ve won a lot of big games. It’s a big week coming up and that’s going to give us a lot of energy and belief. Obviously, there are a lot of things to get better today. I don’t think we’ve done, especially with the ball, the simple things right at all. We will get better.”

Before Sunday, it was actually 35 years since Arsenal last beat Tottenham three times in a row away from home, so the Spaniard broke a record which spanned over three decades on a memorable afternoon.

Troy Deeney hails Emile Smith-Rowe after quitting Arsenal

Arsenal’s team were not the only players to enjoy a fruitful weekend, though, as midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe continues to shine for new club Fulham – after the Englishman joined them for a club-record £34 million in the summer window.

Reports claimed that Arteta would’ve ideally liked to keep Smith-Rowe, but the 24-year-old certainly won’t be regretting his switch across London so far. Indeed, he provided an assist for striker Raul Jimenez in their 1-1 draw at home to West Ham on Saturday, building upon his goal against Leicester City around three weeks ago.

Smith-Rowe is having a real influence at Fulham right now, starting all four of their opening Premier League matches, coming after saw his game time at Arsenal diminish in the seasons before leaving.

The £60,000-per-week Hale End academy graduate could be one of the signings of the season if he carries on this form, and pundit Deeney has showered praise on Smith-Rowe, naming the player in BBC Premier League Team of the Week.

“He’s decided to turn into an absolute monster and is just doing his thing,” said Deeney on Smith-Rowe’s performances at Craven Cottage. “He probably had to leave Arsenal to go to a smaller pond and be that big fish. Anything good that comes out of Fulham is through him. He was excellent.”

Recurrence of ACL injury rules Aneurin Donald out of another summer

The same injury made him miss the whole of Hampshire’s 2020 season

Matt Roller17-Jul-2021

Aneurin Donald has been ruled out for a second consecutive summer after a recurrence of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury which saw him miss the whole of Hampshire’s 2020 season.Donald, 24, joined Hampshire from Glamorgan in August 2018 citing his desire to play international cricket and had a strong first full season with the club, scoring 554 County Championship runs at 39.57 and making 203 T20 Blast runs while striking at 138.09.But he suffered an ACL injury in December 2019 which required surgery, ruling him out for the whole of the 2020 summer, and reported a knee twist during an intra-squad match in March which has required further reconstructive surgery. The news is a significant blow to Donald’s career. Aged 19, he equalled the record for the fastest double-hundred in first-class cricket by hitting 234 off 136 balls against Derbyshire at Colwyn Bay, and he had shown flashes of brilliance in white-ball cricket as a top-order batter. James Clegg, Hampshire’s head of sports science and medicine, said that he was “absolutely confident” that Donald would be able to resume his career in 2022 despite another setback.”Most ACL failures occur when a new unstable episode disrupts the repaired ligament graft,” Clegg said. “In Aneurin’s case, the scans showed that his repaired graft was slowly failing – ultimately you rely on the harvested graft tissue repairing and being able to withstand the demands cricket places on it.”It is really unfortunate Aneurin finds himself back in an ACL rehabilitation programme and these are inevitably long, drawn-out processes but he is the model professional and continues to go above and beyond. Whilst he now unfortunately faces a significant spell on the sidelines, we are targeting a full return to play in 2022 and are absolutely confident Aneurin will return despite this setback.””I’m devastated to be back on the sidelines following my reinjury,” Donald said. “It’s certainly a tough pill to swallow after such a long rehabilitation process that led to me being back in a position to feature on the pitch at the start of this pre-season.”Unfortunately, after trying to continue without a functioning ACL, a scan showing a tear in my meniscus a few weeks later finally led to surgery being the only remaining option. Fortunately, with thanks to Andy Williams and his team at the Fortius Clinic, my second surgery was a success, and I have already begun to dive into the rehabilitation process once again with a full recovery fully expected.”

“I’m extremely proud and grateful for the opportunity given to me to represent Sussex,” van Zyl said. “I made some great friends and memories over the years. Unfortunately, my time at Sussex didn’t end as I would’ve liked competing for a trophy, but I wish the club all the best for the rest of the season and the future.”Keith Greenfield, Sussex’s performance director, said, “Stiaan has not had the season he and we had hoped for, and the Covid-19 pandemic and his knee injury has made the last couple of years very tricky.”Despite that, he has always given his best and is a top man who has been great to have around over the last five years. We wish him well for his future back in South Africa.”After losing his spot in the Test side, van Zyl had signed a three-year Kolpak deal with Sussex ahead of the 2017 season, effectively ending his international career. He was a prolific run-scorer in his first year, compiling 1023 at 48.71 across 13 matches, and also chipped in with useful wickets bowling medium pace.He had a lean 2018 summer, which was curtailed by a serious knee injury, but returned to form the following season as he finished as Sussex’s leading County Championship run-scorer. He missed the whole of the 2020 season because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which severely limited travel options for South African players in county cricket, and has averaged just 24.82 in the Championship this summer.
