Liverpool’s amazing teen could become even bigger than Trent & Bradley

Back in February, Virgil van Dijk couldn’t help but smirk. “They thought I was finished,” he said, Carabao Cup winners medal hung from his neck.

The all-inspiring leader scored the winning goal that ensured Jurgen Klopp tasted silverware in his final season at the helm for Liverpool. It was brilliant, for the Reds had been decimated by injuries and were forced to call upon a host of academy members to help them over the line.

Conor Bradley, Jarell Quansah, Bobby Clark, Jayden Danns and James McConnell all featured. ‘Klopp’s Kids’, as the range of youth talent became known, showcased a new level to the Anfield side’s production line.

It’s changed somewhat now that Arne Slot’s in charge, but hardly to the detriment of Liverpool’s exploits in 2024/25. The Dutch coach promotes a close-knit, immensely talented set-up, and it’s paying dividends.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

And anyway, it’s not like Slot isn’t making good use of some homegrown superstars over on Merseyside.

Liverpool's academy success

Throughout the opening couple of months this season, Slot was loath to tweak his starting line-up, even banishing Quansah to the bench after the first half of Liverpool’s Premier League opener at Ipswich Town. Ibrahima Konate replaced him and remained moveless next to Van Dijk until picking up an injury last week.

Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah

Even so, Quansah is joined by the electric right-back Bradley in cementing themselves as the latest academy sensations to be rising to the fore.

Liverpool’s squad is already woven with high-class quality from the level below. Indeed, Harvey Elliott made his anticipated return on Sunday, having been ruled out for most of the campaign with a fractured foot. The 21-year-old playmaker has been praised for his “sensational” passing by journalist Nizaar Kinsella and will be a big plus across the wintry period.

We’ve mentioned Bradley, but not dug into his budding brilliance. The Northern Irish right-back went from strength to strength in a wonderful breakout year before Klopp departed but has played a reduced role under Slot.

Even so, with Trent Alexander-Arnold sidelined last week, he stepped up against Real Madrid in the Champions League and played an instrumental part in securing a huge victory, notably dispatching Kylian Mbappe as though he were a child.

Speaking of Alexander-Arnold, he’s undoubtedly the cream of the academy crop, breaking to the surface just before Curtis Jones and establishing himself as Liverpool’s biggest talent since Steven Gerrard stepped onto the major stage and became one of the greatest midfielders in football history.

Now, it’s Ben Doak’s turn, and he might just prove to outstrip the current members of Liverpool’s first team.

Ben Doak is Liverpool's next big thing

Doak’s causing quite the stir in the Championship. Slot ruthlessly cut out a host of Klopp’s Kids but the likes of Doak and Stefan Bajcetic have been told to foster their talents elsewhere before returning with the requisite vim and vigour.

Ben Doak for Liverpool

Plying his trade with Middlesbrough, the 19-year-old winger has been hailed as “one of the biggest Scottish talents of the 21st century” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, proving to be every bit the superstar in the making.

Having grown into a prominent role with Boro, under the stewardship of Michael Carrick, Doak will be hoping to establish himself as a first-team regular on Merseyside, demonstrating the physicality and the playmaking prowess to cause a frenzy in England’s top flight.

His bull-like charges down the right flank have allowed him to weather the physicality of England’s second tier and then some. There’s a distinct combativeness to the Scotland international that offers hints of another former prodigy: Wayne Rooney.

The Athletic’s Tim Spiers claimed in a recent interview that Doak has “got a bit of Rooney about him” while the teenager’s agent, Jackie McNamara, has also made the bold statement: “He’s a Scottish Rooney. That’s what I said to Ange at Celtic, I told him I’ve never seen anything like Ben.”

He notched two assists and was crowned the Player of the Match in Middlesbrough’s most recent contest, against Hull City, and it’s becoming pretty clear that he could be tailor-made for prosperity in the Premier League.

His explosiveness and ability to drop the shoulder and tear through opponents is almost uncanny; he really could be the latest version of the Manchester United legend, albeit bursting onto the Premier League scene with Liverpool.

Ben Doak in action for Middlesbrough

He did earn his stripes with the Reds last term, though saw his breakthrough campaign cruelly cut short in December with an injury that froze the gains that had been made across the opening months of the year.

Liverpool fans have been granted a taste of this wondrous youngster’s qualities, and given that he’s being placed in the same bracket as Rooney, it’s fair to suggest that he has the precocity to become a true superstar.

Former Scotland manager Craig Levein said “this kid could be a world-class player” after he ripped Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol to shreds during the November international break.

The Tartan Army have got some talent on their hands, and do you know what? So have Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley and Co have reached some varying heights this term, but Doak could trump the lot. Keep an eye on him.

Centuries from David Bedingham and Sean Dickson provided Durham with a great start to their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two home opener against Leicestershire at the Riverside.Scott Borthwick’s men were reduced to 34 for 3 after an accurate start from the visitors, but Bedingham and Dickson stabilised the innings with a brilliant partnership worth 231 for the fourth wicket.Bedingham continued his imperious form from the 2021 campaign with a flawless hundred displaying incredible array of strokes. He was supported by the determined Dickson, who replaced the injured Alex Lees at the top of the order and scored his first Durham century in red-ball cricket. Shan Masood's unbeaten double century dominates first day in Derby

Durham were put in to bat first without the services of their centurion from Glamorgan, Lees, due to a back injury. Leicestershire made an early breakthrough to capitalise with the new ball as Chris Wright removed opener Michael Jones for 5.Keegan Petersen was thrust into the Durham line-up after arriving in the North East on Wednesday. However, the South African’s debut lasted only 15 deliveries after he played-on with a loose drive from Will Davis’ third ball of the day. Borthwick endured a torrid 27-ball knock that was ended by a quality spell of bowling from Ed Barnes, reducing the hosts to 34 for 3.In need of a partnership, Dickson stemmed the tide alongside Bedingham to steer the home side into the lunch break. Bedingham pressed the accelerator after the interval with a string of boundaries, including a pristine straight drive against Wright. Both players passed fifty within the space of an over as Dickson notched his first half-century of the campaign before Bedingham followed, cutting Barnes to the fence. The visitors struggled throughout the afternoon to make a breakthrough, while matters were made tougher after losing Wright to injury in the middle of his 10th over. Bedingham kept the pressure on the Leicestershire attack, dispatching Davis for two sixes, the second of which found the second row of boxes of the Don Robson Pavilion. The right-hander brought up a deserved century with another sublime drive down the ground, passing the milestone for the first time of the campaign in 144 balls.Dickson faced a nervous wait after reaching 99 before tea, but he got over the line in the first ball after the break to secure his first first-class ton since July 2019. Barnes finally ended a brilliant 231-run partnership between Dickson and Bedingham, pinning the former lbw for 120 with a sharp inswinger. Despite the loss of Dickson, Ned Eckersley and Liam Trevaskis, Bedingham pressed on to his 150 with a sumptuous cut to the fence, piling on the agony for his compatriot Beuran Hendricks and his team-mates.

Injuries mount for Ange with £150m Tottenham star also out for weeks

Under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou is already dealing with an injury-hit Tottenham Hotspur squad right now, but it is now rumoured that another star player in their squad is set to be sidelined for weeks.

Tottenham injuries and suspensions

Spurs currently have as many as eight first team players suffering with one issue or another in terms of fitness, while both Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are currently suspended from action.

Shortlisted: Tottenham looking at "sensational" Postecoglou replacement

The promising managerial talent could be the answer to Spurs’ problems.

Bentancur is in the midst of a domestic ban from the FA, while Bissouma is set to be ineligible until their clash against Liverpool on December 22 after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in their 4-3 defeat at home to Chelsea on Sunday.

It is unclear whether Mikey Moore will finally return from his illness to face Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, with star winger Brennan Johnson in the same boat after Postecoglou hauled the in-form Welshman off against Chelsea.

“Brennan just didn’t feel well,” said Postecoglou on Johnson’s substitution against Chelsea.

“He didn’t feel well at half-time, but he wanted to give it a go. He just wasn’t feeling 100 per cent, so I had to take him off.”

Left-back Ben Davies missed Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea with a thigh injury, while striker Richarlison, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and summer signing Wilson Odobert are all sidelined with long-term injuries and won’t be back until the new year.

Postecoglou was gifted a reprieve when star centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven returned to the starting line-up on Sunday, but the former was replaced after just 15 minutes.

Van de Ven was taken off later in the 90 after feeling tightness (Postecoglou), but it is far more worrying for Romero, who apparently picked up a fresh injury around his quadriceps.

“Romero is just obviously hugely disappointing,” said Postecoglou on Romero’s injury against Chelsea.

“He felt something in his quad. He trained really well. He wasn’t the one I was worried about, to be honest, but, you know, it’s just like I said, the way the season’s going for us unfortunately. So we just have to wait and see.”

Tottenham set to be without Romero for six weeks after fresh injury

The Argentina international had been sidelined with a toe injury, but this instance is a completely separate problem, with TyC Sports reporter Gaston Edul providing an update on the £150 million defender’s condition.

Edu, taking to X, writes that Romero will be sidelined for six weeks at Tottenham after his fresh muscle injury, dealing a major blow to Postecoglou, who must now contend without his “unbelievable” player yet again.

As a result, the former Atalanta star won’t return to the field until 2025, and he is set to miss crucial games against Liverpool and in the Europa League.

Leeds struck gold selling a star who Bielsa said would be an "elite player"

Leeds United fans will be somewhat frustrated with their team’s efforts near the top of the Championship, with the Whites very rarely blowing teams away in the second tier even when more and more victories are tallied up.

Daniel Farke’s men are also heavily reliant on their golden form at Elland Road in keeping their automatic promotion dreams ticking over, having won nine out of 11 games on their own patch this season in the league, compared to their struggles away from the comforts of West Yorkshire.

In stark contrast, the promotion chasers have only three of their ten away contests, with a last-minute own goal salvaging a draw last time out on the road away at Preston North End.

Mateo Joseph had a big part to play in that Jack Whatmough own goal finding the back of the net, as his effort went off the unfortunate Lilywhites man, with the Spanish hotshot another that the Whites will be proud of coming from their own production line.

Leeds' best modern youngsters

Leeds have produced some top-quality talent through their own academy in recent times, with the aforementioned Joseph the next star the Whites will hope can go on to achieve bigger and better things away from the Championship.

He hasn’t quite developed into a potent striker in the first team as of yet – with just two strikes coming his way so far this season in the second tier – but the 21-year-old’s goalscoring antics at youth level mean he could explode into life if given time, considering he has a healthy goal return of 20 playing for the U18s and U21s.

Farke’s promotion candidates will be well aware that if this does occur, many a higher-up suitor will be interested in their top asset, having had to sell a whole host of homegrown gems over the years when a mammoth bid has come in.

The most obvious name that springs to mind here is Kalvin Phillips, who left West Yorkshire behind in 2022 for Manchester City, after Pep Guardiola’s men had snapped up his services for a bumper £45m.

After all, the former Whites number 23 had become an icon at his hometown employers, with a promotion under his belt up to the Premier League making him a much-adored figure, alongside the fact he would amass 234 appearances before the grandeur of City proved too tempting.

There are other faces that graced Elland Road as a youngster and are also now very capable of playing at the top of the English game, with Lewis Cook one that is potentially dismissed as being an original Thorp Arch creation, having gone on to impressively notch up 150 appearances in the Premier League for AFC Bournemouth.

Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook

Leeds fans won’t have forgotten about another homegrown star yet, however, with the ace in question initially garnering hype in West Yorkshire when Marcelo Bielsa occupied the hot seat.

Archie Gray's rise at Leeds

Archie Gray is the player in question here, who is now on the books of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur despite still only being 18 years of age.

Age has always just been a number in Gray’s situation, however, as the teenager was amazingly warming the substitutes bench of the men’s team during Bielsa’s reign, even when Leeds were competing in the top-flight.

Gray would make up the numbers on the bench for Leeds when he was only the tender age of 15, with the Argentinian having to resort to throwing the versatile starlet in at the deep end for contests against Arsenal and West Ham United at the start of 2022, owing to a backlog of injury issues.

Whilst Bielsa was vocal in the fact he didn’t want to fast-track Gray into the intense spotlight of the first team so soon, he also waxed lyrical about what the youngster could go on the achieve, even labelling him as a potential “elite player.”

These were glowing words indeed from a man who is still revered at Elland Road to this day, with Gray going on to live up to the South American’s hype a matter of years after his departure.

Last campaign, the bold Leeds number 22 proved that he can play in many different areas on the pitch by lining up in the right-back spot 30 times under Farke, helping to address that problem area of the pitch well.

As well as excelling in defence, the table above also shows off his assuredness on the ball that made him another body Farke could rely on in midfield, with these top-notch performances in such a demanding division not going unnoticed.

Noted as being “superb” by former Leeds player Jon Newsome during his breakthrough campaign, promotion agonisingly passing Leeds by would ultimately lead to Gray upping and leaving his boyhood employers to the widespread dismay of the Elland Road masses.

Spurs would pick up the Leeds boy wonder for a hefty £40m, with Leeds then going after Jayden Bogle to fill the Gray-shaped hole at right-back, whilst also shrewdly acquiring Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell to boost numbers centrally.

Therefore, Farke and Co will feel pleased that they managed to play a starting role in Gray’s upward trajectory – alongside also gaining £40m for an academy-produced talent – as the 18-year-old now impresses Postecoglou in his new surroundings.

First Impressions

Archie Gray's time at Spurs so far

Despite only starting two games to date in the Premier League so far, the 6 foot 2 starlet is still managing to leave his impression on his new fanbase.

He is again showing off his likeable versatility that made him a first-team regular for the Whites, with Gray surprisingly thrown in at centre-back last time out versus Southampton.

He would walk off the St. Mary’s turf at the end happy with his individual showing, even if it was a quiet night for him at the back in the 5-0 win, with only three of his passes misplaced in what was a comfortable and composed display from him in an unfamiliar position.

If he can continue to impress when given chances in the senior mix at Spurs, the sky does really feel like it could be the limit for Gray as he goes about living up to Bielsa’s previous elite billing.

Leeds would have loved to have had Gray around for far longer, but this sale hasn’t derailed their promotion chances thankfully, as Farke and Co strive to jump up to the Premier League to face off against their ex-star in 2025.

Graham Thorpe has been named as the new head coach of the Afghanistan men’s team, following his departure from the England Test set-up in the wake of this winter’s Ashes.Thorpe, who played 100 Tests for England between 1993 and 2005, was announced by the Afghanistan Cricket Board as the full-time replacement for Lance Klusener, who stood down in November after a two-year tenure.Stuart Law, the former Bangladesh, West Indies and Middlesex coach, had been in charge of the national set-up in an interim capacity, while other names in the frame for the role had included Misbah-ul-Haq and Azhar Mahmood.”The ACB had launched the recruitment process for hiring a new head coach, through which Graham Thorpe was selected as the best available nominee for the position,” the board said in a press release. The appointment completes a rapid return to international coaching for Thorpe, who had also been in line for Law’s vacant role at Middlesex, which was eventually filled by the former England seamer Richard Johnson.Thorpe had been involved in the England set-up for more than a decade but his role as assistant coach ended in controversial circumstances earlier this year, when he was sacked alongside the head coach, Chris Silverwood, and the director of cricket, Ashley Giles, following England’s 4-0 Ashes defeat. In the aftermath of England’s defeat in the fifth and final Test at Hobart, Thorpe caused controversy by filming the arrival of police officers to break up an early-morning drinking session involving several England and Australia players. The police had allegedly been called due to Thorpe lighting a cigar in an indoor space, which is against the law in Tasmania.

Quinton de Kock and Mohsin Khan knock KKR out in last-ball thriller

Super Giants move into plsyoffs after Rinku and Narine’s sixer storm ends agonisingly short of victory

Shastri: The way de Kock played spin was fabulous to watch

So there was this dude who scored an unbeaten 140, and yet the match-winning knock have been 40 off 15This is the magic of T20. Lucknow Super Giants batted their entire innings without losing a single wicket, with Quinton de Kock scoring his second IPL century, but it could have become a footnote because Rinku Singh, with 21 to get in the last over, went 4, 6, 6, against Marcus Stoinis.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Kolkata Knight Riders were having a day, picking up no wickets but losing two in their first three overs, their chances of victory see-sawing between 96.03% and 0.35%.Rinku took them to the brink of a truly ridiculous result. But, in the middle of a game that should have been Super Giants’ but now slipping away rapidly, which is right up there as the worst kind of pressure, Stoinis defended 4 off 3 by picking up two wickets in two balls. One of them was a barely believable catch from Evin Lewis that will go down in IPL folklore. What a way to seal your place in the playoffs. The takedown
de Kock decimated Knight Riders’ mystery spinners, striking at a rate of 183 against Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. The trick – and such a simple one it was too – was his ability to sweep the ball. Wary of bowling too full and playing into that strength, both bowlers pulled their lengths back. But that was the whole point of de Kock’s plan because if there is one shot he plays even better than the sweep it is the pull.de Kock toyed with the mystery spinners the way they usually toy with opposition batters, sowing doubt in their minds and making them second-guess themselves.Rinku Singh’s 40 off 15 brought Knight Riders to the brink of victory•BCCI

The acceleration
On the occasion of de Kock playing his 50th Test match, his coach Mark Boucher said he would go on to play 100 more. As it turned out, he retired after just four more. Test cricket’s loss has been franchise cricket’s gain as de Kock exhibited that most coveted of all batting skills: the ability to take down the opposition’s best bowlers. He was particularly brutal on KKR’s designated death bowler Andre Russell, carving him up for 42 runs in only 15 balls, including five fours and two sixes.Upon getting his century, de Kock crumpled to his knees, first holding his head in his hands and then punching the DY Patil Stadium turf. But he still wasn’t done. From 60 off 44, he ransacked 80 off 26. Nobody could stop him. Not until he’d made his highest score in T20 cricket, set the record for the highest opening partnership in IPL history, and ensured for only the fourth time that a team batting first had completed its full quota of overs without losing a single wicket.Batting in de Kock’s slipstream, KL Rahul made his 34th fifty-plus score in 99 IPL innings and completed 500 runs in a season for the fifth successive time. The rookie
For all the uproar around Umran Malik, there is another uncapped Indian fast bowler who has been just as good. Perhaps even better.Mohsin Khan’s success proves that even the most in-your-face format of our game has plenty of room for subtlety. Line and length and a hint of seam movement into the left-hander brought him his first wicket. A crafty little slower ball brought him his second. Pure steel brought his team a third. Mohsin didn’t bowl the ball that claimed the wicket, but that just made it all the more special.Knight Riders were 125 for 3 after 12 overs. Nitish Rana had smacked 42 off 22 balls. Shreyas Iyer and Sam Billings were going from both ends. Rahul knew it was now or never and went to his gun bowler, and he delivered a near-perfect 13th over that cost just two runs. The previous three had cost 46.Super Giants had an opening and Rahul gambled once more, bringing on the batting allrounder Stoinis to tempt the opposition. Shreyas had no choice. He went for the big shot and was caught on the boundary.Super Giants scored 210, but even that needed defending, and Mohsin Khan stepped up•BCCI

Avesh’s genius
This is how you construct an over against Andre Russell.Hard length first ball. Nearly ends up as a catch at long-on. Then, with Russell back on strike, fast and short and out of his reach, twice. Then the yorker, tailing in at the last second, very nearly toppling him off his feet. Then the wide yorker.Russell is among the scariest six-hitters on the planet. The only way to get the better of him is to be unpredictable. Avesh Khan knew this. A lot of bowlers know this. But pulling it off in a live match with everything on the line is a whole other thing. And then…When Russell fell in the 17th over, to another slower one from Mohsin, Knight Riders’ chances of victory were less than 1%. They needed 61 off 20 balls.Rinku and Narine are an unlikely power-hitting pair but they can still power-hit. Enabled by a steady diet of length balls and yorkers turning into full-tosses, the two left-handers clobbered 40 off 14 deliveries and took us straight into the twilight zone.Anything could happen. And so it did. Rinku smoked Stoinis all over the park. Lewis pulled off a breathtaking one-handed catch, sprinting in full tilt off the cover boundary and then diving to his left. Finally, with 3 needed off the last ball, Stoinis demolished Umesh Yadav’s stumps.
