Big Luis Diaz upgrade: Liverpool plot move for "magical" £60m forward

Liverpool were supposed to collapse when Jurgen Klopp left. Like a house of cards. Rivals wanted the Reds cast back into the depths of mediocrity after their prosperous period. Liverpool had had their heyday, and it was time for some new blood to challenge indomitable Manchester City.

How wrong they were. To be fair, Liverpool’s own fanbase has been flummoxed by the ridiculous football being played under Arne Slot’s management. Four points clear at the pole of the Premier League at Christmas – and with a game in hand too.

Liverpool managerArneSlot

Tottenham Hotspur have been hailed for their entertaining football. Ange Postecoglou knows how to raise the volume from the dugout. The problem for those of a Spurs persuasion is he doesn’t really control which area of the crowd that noise will come from.

Liverpool pounced on Tottenham’s chaos and won 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. It was beautiful, beguiling, brilliant. The forwards were in full swing.

Mohamed Salah was the main man – no surprises there – but Luis Diaz returned to Premier League form brilliantly with a two-goal performance down N17.

Luis Diaz's striking success

Diaz, 27, assumed the centre-forward spot at Tottenham with Diogo Jota being managed after a long injury and Darwin Nunez’s inconsistency convincing Slot that he needed to be benched.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Diaz isn’t a natural striker but his movements and trickiness make him a slippery customer with Cody Gakpo and Salah flanking. If you can only say one thing for Slot, you’d have to praise his tactical brilliance.

As per Sofascore, Diaz complemented his two-goal return with two key passes and success in his one attempted dribble. He’s dynamic and difficult to defend against, but not the solution at number nine in the long run.

Liverpool eyeing new forward

Liverpool will need to consider a new striker in several months, for Nunez has only scored four goals across 22 outings in 2024/25 and Jota, as stated, cannot be trusted on the fitness front.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As per Football Insider, FSG have found their dream solution in Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro. The 23-year-old has been excellent since arriving on the south coast in 2023 and is also catching Arsenal’s eye.

Liverpool’s recruitment team are understood to have discussed Joao Pedro in recent transfer conversations, and it may well be that he is right at the top of the shopping list, with a bid now being plotted.

However, the Seagulls are no pushovers and will look to collect £60m for their talisman’s departure, but on the basis of the evidence, his arrival would be worth the financial blow.

Why Joao Pedro could be better than Luis Diaz

Diaz is wonderfully electric, but the problem with his energy is that it can’t be channelled into something fluent and even. Instead, it’s bumpy and slanted, leaving Liverpool with a world-class talent prone to lapses.

Before his north London brace, the Colombian had gone three months – ten fixtures – since a top-flight goal, but then with 11 strikes from 23 matches across all competitions, he’s hardly flattering to deceive.

Even so, Brighton’s South American star has the quality to take his place when the time comes. Indeed, Diaz’s tentative contract discussions with Liverpool over a new contract have reportedly provided no fruit so far, with the respective parties believed to have ‘disagreements’.

Barcelona are long-time admirers and it feels like next summer could be the perfect time to cash in while the 27-year-old’s stock is high.

Joao Pedro must be his replacement, already a potent force. As per FBref, Joao Pedro ranks among the top 11% of Premier League forwards this season for goals scored, the top 16% for assists and the top 12% for aerial battles won per 90, emphasising not only his potency but his physicality too.

He’s scored four goals and assisted three more from just 11 Premier League games (nine starts). Last season, he notched 20 strikes from 44 matches across all competitions, impressing after his £30m transfer from Watford.

Diaz is a showman, one of the league’s great entertainers, but Pedro also carries that special something that raises roofs. He has recently been described as a “really magical” player by Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard.

The fact is that Pedro is already producing performances that carry underlying data that outdoes that of Diaz. Liverpool’s winger slash forward doesn’t actually produce the highest output concerning his ball-carrying and ball-playing, hitting a similar vein of creativity and failing to match Brighton’s man in terms of combativeness and defensive strength.

Let’s not forget that the Brighton attacker is only 23, and while he would cost a pretty penny to bring to Anfield, Liverpool would be investing in a talent capable of hitting stratospheric heights across the seasons to come.

Southampton's Flynn Downes in action with Brighton & Hove Albion's Joao Pedro

Ultimately, Liverpool are going to need to address their problem at number nine, with Nunez unable to prove his composure and clinical edge thus far and Diaz probably not the long-term solution.

Diaz is a first-rate player, but he’s prone to blips and is most naturally effective as a left winger anyway.

In Pedro, Liverpool would secure an upgrade in the striker’s seat while bolstering their left flank too, given that the Brazilian has played ample football on the wing.

Slot has taken Klopp’s gifted group of players and sharpened them to a fine attacking point. Brighton’s main man would only go from strength to strength on Merseyside, and FSG need to make it happen.

Kent take 22 points and basement side Gloucestershire six.Gloucestershire started day four on 37 for 5, still 89 behind the hosts’ first-innings total of 564 but facing a Kent attack minus Matt Milnes, who was being rested as a precaution.Miles Hammond was on nought when he clipped Duffy to Linde in the first over of the day, but the chance went down and for the next 40 minutes Gloucestershire chipped away at Kent’s lead, until Chris Dent tried to drive Duffy and edged the ball to Jordan Cox at second slip. Cox could only parry the chance, but a diving Sam Billings took the rebound, removing Dent for 32.Linde then produced a violently spinning delivery to bowl Hammond for 41, the ball pitching almost a foot outside off before crashing into the stumps.Ryan Higgins took two from Jack Leaning to nudge the visitors into the lead and Linde couldn’t hold a difficult caught and bowled chance from Higgins in the final over before lunch, at which point Gloucestershire were 16 ahead.Higgins had survived half an hour of the afternoon session when he played on to Quinn and was bowled for 30 and Daniel Bell-Drummond then had Ollie Price caught by the sub fielder Will Harby for three at square leg, from just his third delivery. An elegant cover drive saw Phillips past 50, but he eventually fell to a juggling slip catch by Cox off Linde, leaving Zafar Gohar unbeaten on seven and the visitors rueing their decision to send in three nightwatchers at the end of day three, when they lost five wickets in the final session.Ollie Robinson began the run chase as if in Blast mode, cracking 20 from the first three overs, before he fell to a brilliant one-handed catch by Hammond, while attempting to drive Gohar.Compton, who needed 42 to become the first County Championship player to make 1000 runs this season, was initially more measured, taking Kent to within five runs of victory before he was lbw to Phillips.Jack Leaning finished on eight not out after driving Phillips for four to level the scores and then hitting the same bowler to the cover boundary to clinch the win, while Bell-Drummond was unbeaten on 20.

Benfica rejeita proposta do Palmeiras por Carlos Vinícius, e centroavante deve ficar para o meio do ano

Nada feito!

Bentancur upgrade: Spurs enquire to sign "one of the best CMs" for £42m

Tottenham Hotspur are entering the January transfer window in a desperate situation, with owner Daniel Levy urgently needing to open his chequebook to turn around their fortunes.

Ange Postecoglou’s side currently sit in 12th place in the Premier League table, already 12 points off a top-four place, failing to win any of the last four outings as a result of the ongoing injury crisis.

Such issues have led to first-team members having to operate in unfamiliar roles, undoubtedly contributing to the lack of form and subsequent lowly league standing.

However, the club have already completed a deal for goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague, looking to provide quality between the sticks after Fraser Forster’s unsuccessful stint in trying to fill the void left by the injured Guglielmo Vicario.

More signings are still needed in various areas of the pitch, with efforts being made in recent days to try and bolster Postecoglou’s current midfield department.

Spurs make enquiry to land £42m talent

According to TEAMtalk, Spurs have made an enquiry to land Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi in January, as the club aim to add depth to the first-team squad.

However, the Lilywhites aren’t alone in their pursuit of the Italian, with Newcastle United and Manchester United also monitoring the progress of the 25-year-old during the ongoing window.

Frattesi has found minutes hard to come by during 2024/25, starting just four times and featuring for a total of just 585 minutes in Serie A, with Simone Inzaghi’s side currently sitting in third place.

Despite his lack of minutes, Inter don’t want to part ways with the star but could be open to selling him should they receive an offer in the region of €50m (£42m), with no cash-plus-player deals expected to be accepted.

It would be another huge transfer should Spurs win the race for his signature, but he would provide a huge upgrade on one player who currently plies his trade in North London.

Why Frattesi would be an upgrade on Bentancur for Spurs

Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been a key member of Postecoglou’s side in recent times, that is when he’s been available after serving various suspensions in the last few months.

The Uruguayan was hit with a seven-game ban by the FA for using a racial slur, before picking up a suspension for the defeat against Newcastle on Saturday after collecting his fifth yellow card of the campaign.

However, he’s often been the club’s most impressive option at the heart of the side when called upon, often featuring alongside Dejan Kulusevski in the middle of the park during 2024/25.

Such a partnership could be broken up once again come the end of the month should any deal be reached for the services of Frattesi, with the Italian providing an upgrade on the 27-year-old based upon their respective figures from the ongoing season.

The Inter star, who’s previously been dubbed as “one of the best midfielders in Serie A” by journalist Fabrizio Romano, has registered more progressive carries per 90 along with more through balls providing that added attacking threat in the middle of Ange’s side.

Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr have often provided the defensive solidity in the department, opening the door to another box-to-box option in the form of Frattesi.

The Italian has also completed more take-ons than Bentancur, whilst notching more shots per 90 – showcasing the talent he could provide on transition for Postecoglou’s side should he move.

The £42m fee touted for his services would be yet another huge investment, but it’s one the club desperately need if they are to stop the current rot they find themselves in.

Frattesi would provide serious quality, with his ability to feature for a title-challenging side undoubtedly a huge bonus to help them finally end their near two-decade wait for a trophy of any form.

Newcastle chasing £50m Isak partner who’s the "perfect January signing"

Newcastle United have rode the crest of a wave over the past month, crafting a seven-game winning run that has propelled them into fifth place in the Premier League.

An emphatic 2-0 win at the Emirates on Tuesday evening has also put Eddie Howe’s side in command of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie. Arsenal are a great team but will need to claim a two-goal victory at St. James’ Park just to take the fixture to a penalty shootout.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Magpies fans are on the fringes of dreamland right now but know that football’s ebb and flow could pull their team back from the ascendency if opportunities aren’t grasped this month.

Alexander Isak has scored 14 goals from 15 games and is “the best striker in the Premier League right now,” according to pundit Jamie Carragher, but he needs more support, and Newcastle need to act.

Newcastle eyeing January signing

Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy have been excellent recently, and while the former is one of the prized wingers in the Premier League, his right-flanking peer is prone to choppy form and, at 29, needs competition.

Well, according to The i Paper, Newcastle are still monitoring Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo as sporting director Paul Mitchell weighs up a winter bid.

The Cherries hardly want to sell their deadliest attacking outlet and have priced him at £50m, but Newcastle need one more piece to complement their rich frontline and perhaps make Isak even better – imagine that.

Imagine Antoine Semenyo & Alexander Isak

Bournemouth signed Semenyo from Bristol City for a £10m fee in January 2023 and he has gone from strength to strength over the past two years, becoming a “key player” – as The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell has said – in Andoni Iraola’s thriving system.

Hailed as “almost unplayable on his day” by reporter Ed Aarons, Semenyo has been one of the main men at the Vitality Stadium this season, posting seven goal contributions from 21 Premier League matches as Bournemouth exceed expectations, currently nestled in seventh place, above Manchester City.

Murphy has been in fine fettle this term but Semenyo carries more technical quality and forward drive in the final third, ranking among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League this year for shots taken (4.24) per 90, as per FBref.

It could be just what Isak needs, for the Sweden star is much more than a simple goalscorer, perhaps the most complete forward in England.

Semenyo and Isak are both 25 and thus could forge a lasting partnership at St. James’ Park, with the electric Anthony Gordon younger still at 23.

Isak has of course been incredible this season, striking at a devastating rate over the past few months and beating Mohamed Salah to the Premier League Player of the Month award for December.

Newcastle’s talisman is perhaps not quite so devastating in front of goal as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, for example, but he definitely brings more to the table.

As per FBref, the £120k-per-week ace ranks among the top 12% of Premier League forwards in 2024/25 for assists (0.25), the top 8% for shot-creating actions (3.69) and the top 5% for successful take-ons (1.60) per 90, showcasing skills that make him the protean, slippery customer that he is.

Moreover, Isak has created seven big chances and averaged 1.7 key passes per top-flight fixture this season, as per Sofascore, also in the thick of the action with 34.8 touches on average, which is high for a centre-forward.

Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle

He drops deep, influences play and pushes forward with lightning-fast speed to create a sense of synergy that most teams can only dream of – usually after the Magpies have blown them away.

Given that Semenyo is a goalscoring winger who fires fusillade upon fusillade of barrages on his enemies, this could be the kind of dynamic duo that Howe loves – just take a look at how it’s working out with Gordon on the alternate wing.

This hasn’t been sustained throughout the campaign; Newcastle toiled through the early knockings. However, Howe’s tactical nous has presented itself once again, with the interpersonal skills to get the whole squad on board showcased too.

Murphy is industrious and talented in his own right, but Semenyo would bring something different that could work wonders as Newcastle chart a course back into European competition next season.

It’s a move that Newcastle need to make. While £50m is a massive sum, Newcastle are prepared to spend big in order to achieve their goals. Further to that point, right-winger Miguel Almiron is expected to be sold either this month or at the end of the season, easing PSR-related concerns and freeing up space in, look at that, Semenyo’s realm.

Will Newcastle get the deal done? Analyst Ben Mattinson described Semenyo as the “perfect January signing” for any top team, when discussing Arsenal’s intrigue in the Bournemouth man, but Newcastle have already stabbed a blow into the Gunners’ season on the pitch and could translate their trick in the market this month.
