Debatable selections, 'unfair practices', 10 for 7 – Delhi cricket is in a mess, again

Even as Delhi struggled to stay afloat against Saurashtra, selectors Khoda and Sidhana had a war of words, which ended with Sidhana walking out of the meeting

Delhi’s 2022-23 Ranji Trophy campaign has suffered one blow after another. They lost one match against Maharashtra outright, conceded the first-innings lead in two others, and are now staring down the barrel against Saurashtra in the ongoing fourth round of matches. Against Saurashtra, in fact, they had slumped to 10 for 7 before recovering to post 133 on the opening day in Rajkot.Currently seventh in an eight-team pool, their hopes of making the knockouts are fading fast.Off the field, not unusually, trouble has been brewing, with the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) yet again in the midst of a controversy. On Tuesday, Gagan Khoda and Mayank Sidhana, part of the selection committee that picks the senior and Under-25 men’s teams, had a heated exchange during a meeting.Related

Delhi out of pace-bowling options as injury list grows

While the selection of the U-25 team for the next round of CK Nayudu Trophy matches is believed to have been at the centre of the argument, there have been rumblings over inconsistent selections in the Ranji squad too. There are also allegations against DDCA secretary Siddharth Verma, that he had prevented U-25 coach – and former India fast bowler – Pankaj Singh from sitting in the selection meeting. On Wednesday, Khoda, the former India batter and a national selector during MSK Prasad’s tenure as selection chief, alleged that Sidhana had tried to push for “dubious candidates” in the U-25 team.Sidhana walked out in protest, saying that he had done so because of “certain selections” made by Khoda and Anil Bhardwaj, the third member of the selection panel. “Even secretary Siddharth Verma didn’t pay heed to my objections,” Sidhana, a former Punjab player, told PTI. “Mr Khoda didn’t watch any of the Under-25 trial games and the other selector Mr Bhardwaj only wants one player in the team, Vikas Solanki.”My contention was his performance when given a chance earlier in BCCI Under-25 tournaments hadn’t been great, but they insisted on going by trial-game results. I can’t support unfair practices.”Badoni opens, while frontline openers sit outWithin the Ranji set-up, a number of questions have now been raised over Delhi coach Abhay Sharma’s preference for handing the opener’s role to debutant Ayush Badoni, normally a middle-order batter, against Saurashtra’s top-notch attack. Dhruv Shorey has been one of the openers, while murmurs are that the two other openers, Vaibhav Sharma and Salil Malhotra, have been kept out because of internal team politics. The two have been in the team hotel in Rajkot, and not with the team at the ground, since BCCI rules permit only 15 squad members in the dressing room.Prior to the fourth round of matches, Badoni was slotted in as an opener, even as designated vice-captain Himmat Singh was dropped. Senior batter Nitish Rana, too, has been out of favour, while regular wicketkeeper Anuj Rawat has been relegated to the U-25 team.”Look, we select a team and the coach selects the playing XI. We don’t interfere,” Khoda said when asked about the selection shuffle.Injuries haven’t helped Delhi eitherSelection issues aside, Delhi have also had to grapple with injuries to key players. They are already without six first-choice fast bowlers, and have had to dig into the reserves to field a pace attack.Ishant Sharma is recovering from a side strain, while Simarjeet Singh is suffering from a heel injury. Mayank Yadav has a torn hamstring, while Navdeep Saini is rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy after an injury he picked up on the Test tour of Bangladesh, and Harshit Rana is nursing a toe injury. Pradeep Sangwan, who was captain until the previous season, hasn’t been considered.”You had no pre-season camp, no proper training session and fast bowlers were highly under-cooked,” a senior DDCA official had lamented to PTI as the slew of injuries surfaced. “There was no planning, no vision and what has now happened is exactly what was supposed to happen without systems in place. Some of the pacers were unfit before the season.”

Saved by Salah: Slot must axe 5/10 Liverpool star who blew his big chance

Liverpool do like to make things hard for themselves, ay.

But it didn’t matter in the end, with brave Southampton defeated at Anfield after a second-half turnaround, Will Smallbone’s opening goal negated by a crisp Darwin Nunez finish and Mohamed Salah’s brace.

Darwin Nunez celebrates for Liverpool

He silenced in midweek, but Salah returned to form ahead of Tuesday’s crunch Champions League second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. The unflappable talisman truly is a special player.

Mohamed Salah keeps on firing

Liverpool now command a 16-point lead at the top of the Premier League, albeit having played two more games than second-placed Arsenal. Still, it’s quite the gap with the final stretch up ahead.

Liverpool players celebrate Mo Salah's goal

As in Paris, Salah struggled to make his mark for the opening half, but came up with the goods when it mattered here, taking his seasonal total to a rather extraordinary 32 goals and 22 assists from 41 matches.

He lost four of his five duels and ceded possession 21 times, but the 32-year-old also provided underpar Liverpool with an inimitable attacking outlet, hailed by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano for his “unstoppable” efforts this season.

While Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai’s half-time withdrawals were perhaps preordained with PSG looming large, Tsimikas was skating on thin ice and might have originally been slated for the full 90.

But he failed his big chance.

Kostas Tsimikas failed his big chance

Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League this season, but the left side of Slot’s backline has left something to be desired.

Andy Robertson has faced his fair share of detractors this season and you’d think Tsimikas might use his counterpart’s woes to elevate his standing in Slot’s reckoning. But despite a combative display against Southampton, he still flattered to deceive.

Kostas Tsimikas for Liverpool

The Liverpool Echo branded the 28-year-old with a 5/10 match rating after his meek showing, noting that he wasn’t ‘on the same wavelength’ as his peers while also struggling to contain Tyler Dibling.

That said, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Greece international. He won six of his ten contested duels and made five tackles, as per Sofascore, but he also committed a series of fouls and skirted close to the line of a dismissal. Tsimikas left at the interval with a booking to his name.

Ultimately, Tsimikas’ booking and indeed Slot’s decision to bring him back to the bench at half-time makes a firm comment on his standing in the squad. He’s never quite nailed down a starting berth and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change.

With reputable sources such as Romano confirming FSG’s interest in bringing Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez to the club this summer, it feels like the Greek defender’s day might be done on Merseyside.

Chalkboard

He’s been a fantastic servant but this could be a move to further enhance Slot’s project – and after such an electric start to life in the big seat, he deserves backing.

Gill and Shami seal top-two finish for Titans

Mohit Sharma also took four wickets to knock Sunrisers out of the playoffs race

Srinidhi Ramanujam15-May-20232:47

Should Gill have paced his innings better?

Gujarat Titans stormed to a top-two finish for the second time in a row with a 34-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Ahmedabad on Monday. With 18 points from 13 matches, the defending champions are the first team to seal a playoff berth, en route knocking Sunrisers out of the contention.Shubman Gill’s maiden IPL hundred and Sai Sudharsan’s 47 propelled Titans to 188 for 9 after being put into bat. That set the stage for Mohammed Shami, Yash Dayal and Mohit Sharma to trigger a Sunrisers collapse very early in the chase and that was basically that. Despite Heinrich Klaasen’s fighting fifty, too much was left too late to chase down.It was also a night when pacers called the shots, accounting for 17 of the 18 wickets to fall on the red-soil pitch at Motera Stadium. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was one among them, who shone the brightest by taking a five-wicket haul, however, it wasn’t enough for Sunrisers who now have nothing to play for but their own wounded pride. Gill and Sudharsan turn it onWriddhiman Saha’s stay was short-lived as he nicked an outswinger from Bhuvneshwar to be out for a duck off the third ball of the innings. From there on, it was the Gill-Sudharsan show as the duo put on 149 runs for the second wicket. Barring them, none of the Titans’ batters even touched double-figures.Both Gill and Sudharsan’s innings were filled with fours – 13 to the centurion and six to the almost half-centurion. They hit ten fours in the powerplay with four of them coming back-to-back in the fourth over bowled by left-arm quick Fazalhaq Farooqi. A pull, a short-arm jab, a cover drive, a scoop, you name it, Gill played it.From 65 for 1 after six overs, the total touched 100 in the next four as the Titans kept accelerating. Interestingly, the first six of the innings came only in the 11th over, off Sudharsan’s bat when he scooped left-arm seamer Marco Jansen over fine leg.Having reached his first fifty, with nine fours and no sixes, in 22 balls, Gill slowed down a bit, needing 34 more to bring up his hundred.Sudharsan, who replaced Vijay Shankar to play his first match in almost a month, looked solid in terms of technique, finding gaps and putting away loose balls. He did, however, benefit from two dropped catches.Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up three wickets in the final over•BCCI

Five-star BhuvneshwarIt all began in the 15th over bowled by Jansen, who had missed Sunrisers’ last few games. By that time, the left-arm pacer had conceded 32 runs in his three overs and had bowled four wides and two no-balls. Yet Aiden Markram backed him and the bowler repaid that faith. He dismissed Sudharsan with his first delivery of the over when Natarajan ran from backward point and took an excellent catch. In the next over, Bhuvneshwar had Hardik Pandya caught at backward point. Natarajan came on for the 17th over and he picked up the wicket of David Miller. It was then Farooqi’s turn to dismiss the IPL debutant Dasun Shanaka. Then came the final over where Bhuvneshwar went W, W, W, 1, W, 1b to close things out. He scalped three wickets and effected a run-out to finish with an excellent figure of 5 for 30.Three four-wicket hauls in GT vs SRH•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Titans strangle SRH upfrontSunrisers couldn’t handle the pace of Shami, Dayal and Mohit, who combined to take all nine wickets that fell in the chase. In the first over, Anmolpreet Singh top-edged a back-of-the-length ball and was caught by Rashid Khan, running across from deep third. In the second, Dayal induced an outside edge to send Abhishek Sharma back. Then came steaming hot Shami who was too good for both Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram. At that stage, he seemed almost unplayable – three wickets for five runs in 10 balls.Sunrisers’ 29 for 4 became 59 for 7 when Mohit picked up three wickets in his first two overs. Klaasen, the lone warriorLosing regular wickets at the other end didn’t stop Klaasen from looking for quick runs. In an otherwise forgettable season for Sunrisers’ batters, the South African was the only one to cross the 300-run mark this season. On Monday, though he started patiently by scoring 23 off his first 18 deliveries, he took the attack against Noor Ahmad, smashing two sixes and a boundary off his bowling to up the ante. He got to his second fifty of the season in 35 balls. The only notable partnership for the visitors was the one for the eighth wicket between Klaasen (64) and Bhuvneshwar (27) as they stitched 68 runs off 47 deliveries.

Even better than Isak: Arsenal struck gold with "unbelievable" £3m signing

Arsenal’s summer goal is clear. Forget everything else, Andrea Berta, you need a striker.

It’s been a problem for a number of years now and for some reason, it’s been ignored by the Gunners’ recruitment team in the last two transfer windows.

Last summer, they looked at RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, only for the Slovenian powerhouse to sign a new deal in Germany. That move could be back on the table in 2025, however.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskobefore taking a penalty

In January, there were a number of links. Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic looked to be on the market but did not move. Manchester City signed Omar Marmoush, too. There were players available.

That said, it looks like Arsenal are waiting for Alexander Isak. Sadly, they might be waiting a long old time…

The latest on Alexander Isak's future

Back in the summer of 2022, Swedish centre-forward moved from Real Socided, joining Newcastle United in a deal worth £63m. Given his form since, it’s safe to say he’s been worth every penny and then some.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsak

Well, as it happens, the Gunners swerved on the chance to sign him in the January of the same year. A report from the Athletic at the time suggested that Arsenal weren’t prepared to pay Isak’s then £75m release clause, deeming it too high.

Doesn’t that look rather foolish now?

Reports emerged this week suggesting that the North Londoners were set to launch a £101m bid for the Toon star but that is unlikely to be accepted. Claims over the winter suggested that it may take as much as £150m for the Magpies to sell.

Isak appears happy at St James’ Park and is riding the crest of a wave right now having scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final last Sunday.

If Newcastle don’t secure Champions League football then it might persuade the striker to move elsewhere but it would still take a colossal fee.

As a result, Arsenal may have to turn their attenion back to the aforementioned Sesko. He’s got a thunderous shot on him which reminds us…the Gunners have had some brilliant strikers throughout the years, some even better than Isak.

The £3m Arsenal signing who was better than Isak

While Arsene Wenger’s time at Arsenal ended without much success, there was always one certainty; he had a mighty fine centre-forward leading the line.

Whether it was Ian Wright, Thierry Henry, Alexis Sanchez and to a lesser extent, Olivier Giroud, the pedigree of striker was impressive.

While Henry – certainly Isak-esque in his movements and finishing ability – is the club’s greatest-ever player – we want to talk about a certain Robin van Persie here.

As it happens, the Dutchman found himself in a similar situation to Isak when he moved to Manchester United.

Van Persie wasn’t happy the direction the club were travelling in and after getting fed up of not competing for major honours, he moved to the biggest club in the country at the time, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils.

While Isak isn’t unhappy in the north east, he will eventually want to challenge for titles like the Premier League and Champions League. He may now be a Carabao Cup winner but as Mikel Arteta’s side have proven over the last three seasons, they are closer to winning the league than Newcastle are. That’s a fact.

That’s precisely why the Flying Dutchman decided to leave Wenger and the Emirates behind in 2012, signing for United in a £24m deal. It’s safe to say his switch was a roaring success, winning the league title in his debut campaign at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex subsequently waxed lyrical over the attacker:

While Van Persie was sensational in United red, scoring 58 goals in 105 outings, it was in Arsenal red where he learned the arts of being a striker, ultimately becoming a Premier League icon.

Signed for a measly £3m from Feyenoord 2004, the 20-year-old arrived as more of a natural winger. However, like Henry, Wenger transformed him into one of the deadliest players we’ve seen in England’s top-flight.

To put things simply, he was even more lethal in front of goal than Isak. In total, Van Persie scored 132 times in 278 appearances for the Gunners, with his best campaign in front of goal that remarkable 2011/12 season where he netted 30 goals in 38 Premier League games and added another seven in cup competitions.

He won the top-flight Golden Boot that year and won it again with United the following season, bagging 26 in 38.

While Isak is still in the infancy of his career, he is yet to win a Premier League Golden Boot and unlike Van Persie, has not yet won a PFA Premier League Player of the Year award either. He will surely get there but there will be no topping Liverpool’s Mo Salah in 2024/25.

Former Manchester United forward Robin van Persie.

Speaking of this season, how Arteta must long for a striker of Van Persie’s calibre. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are both out with season-ending injuries and they’re having to rely on midfielder Mikel Merino to score the goals.

How times change, eh?

Ashleigh Gardner eight-for, 12 in the match, as Australia claim Ashes advantage

Victory on fifth day puts tourists 4-0 in multi-format series against England

Ashleigh Gardner became only the second woman to pick eight wickets in a Test innings•Getty Images

Ashleigh Gardner sent down her arm ball, Amy Jones charged past and the ball bounced off Alyssa Healy’s battered hands, onto her chest then into the gloves, Australia’s tough-as-nails wicketkeeper whipping off the bails with a millimetre or two to spare as Jones was sent trudging back to the changing room. It handed Gardner her fifth of a stunning eight wickets for the innings after she had been pivotal in putting the tourists on top at Trent Bridge heading into the fifth and final day of an enthralling Women’s Ashes Test. It was also a turning point in this match which Australia won by 89 runs to claim four crucial points for the series.Healy pulled off the dismissal despite fractures to her left index finger and right ring finger, suffered during Australia’s warm-up match, and Gardner didn’t stop there, claiming 8 for 66 in the innings to end with 12 wickets for the match, the best Women’s Test return for Australia and second-best overall.Related

Jones’s dismissal, for just 4, left Danni Wyatt as England’s only recognised batter, at the crease opposite Sophie Ecclestone with 117 runs still needed if they were to pull off the highest successful run chase in Women’s Test history. And while Wyatt reached her half-century on debut, it was not enough as she was the last wicket to fall – to none other than Gardner, lbw for 54. England may now have to win as many as five of the remaining six white-ball games if they are to claim the Ashes for the first time since 2013-14.Wyatt had kept the runs flowing steadily after resuming on 20 with England 116 for 5 and needing 152 more. She pounced on some width offered by Tahlia McGrath, driving to the rope through cover and punching Kim Garth past gully, then brought up her fifty whipping Gardner’s shorter delivery away for a single.Gardner had removed the threat of first-innings double-cenuturion Tammy Beaumont, captain Heather Knight and the dangerous Nat Sciver Brunt on Sunday evening in a stunning spell which yielded three wickets for nine runs in the space of 17 balls. And it was her impeccable lengths and line outside off stump that proved devastating on the last morning. She invited Kate Cross, the nightwatcher unbeaten on 5 overnight, to drive and she obliged but managed only to edge to Healy.Ecclestone, who had kept England in the contest with her 10 wickets for the match – made up of twin five-wicket hauls – fell lbw as Gardner switched to bowling round the wicket. The Australia allrounder then removed Lauren Filer for a duck with one that crashed into off stump before rapping Wyatt on the pad as she attempted to sweep. Gardner had taken 4 for 99 in England’s first innings, in which they conceded a lead of just 10 runs to Australia. The Australians had set England 268 to win – helped by half-centuries to Beth Mooney and Healy, who broke a string of three Test ducks – which would have surpassed England’s own record for the highest fourth-innings total of 245 for 9 during last year’s dramatic draw in Canberra. But Gardner ensured that wasn’t to be, as Australia broke a run of six draws in women’s Tests going back to 2015 in an excellent advertisement for playing over five days as opposed to four.

Ornstein: Chelsea now want to sign £50m star scouted in international break

Chelsea aren’t the type of club to mess about when it comes to transfer interest, and it will come as no surprise to hear they are now hot on the trail of one of Europe’s rising commodities ahead of the summer window, per reports.

Chelsea are already making moves ahead of the summer

Enzo Maresca has endured a mixed spell in charge of Chelsea, but may finish the campaign with a top-four finish and silverware in the form of the Conference League should all go to plan.

Taking into account that he is still fairly new to senior management, any such outcome would have to go down as a success story at Stamford Bridge. Looking to build on solid foundations, the Blues boss has already sealed deals to bring Dario Essugo and Geovany Quenda to west London from Sporting Clube de Portugal for a fee in excess of £60m.

Sporting CP's GeovanyQuendain action

Unlikely to stop there, Chelsea are ready to sell Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix to fund their striker pursuit, potentially freeing up £345,000 per week in wage expenditure to hone in on improving other areas of the squad.

Finding a balance that adheres to PSR regulations will be a challenge. Still, Todd Boehly and company are well-versed in the art of the deal, so expect plenty of incomings from start to finish in the upcoming window.

While their strategy of stockpiling young talent has its critics, they aren’t the only club in the world keen to amass an empire of assets, either at first-team level or for trade on the market.

Continuing the theme of pushing towards a younger squad profile, Maresca has now put his hat in the ring for one of Europe’s most promising defenders, according to recent developments.

Chelsea 'looking closely' at Bournemouth breakout star Dean Huijsen

According to David Ornstein (as per by CaughtOffside), Chelsea are ‘looking closely’ at Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen and may look to trigger his £50m release clause, which is active from this summer.

He stated: “He is expected to move for that £50m clause, which is active in the summer, and I’m sure Bournemouth, the player and his suitors would ideally like some clarity sooner rather than later so they can plan accordingly.

“We know Chelsea have been looking closely at him, Newcastle have been heavily linked but not sure I see that one materialising and even massive clubs on the continent like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are being mentioned in certain quarters.”

Reports in Spain lay out that Chelsea watched Huijsen in action for Spain against the Netherlands in the Nations League, lending credence to the notion that they could strike to bring the Amsterdam-born man to west London. In light of his potential, he has been labelled “excellent” by prominent X personality Jacek Kulig.

Real Madrid have also run checks on the defender and could offer some serious competition in the battle for his signature. They won’t be the only ones judging his recent form.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will firm up their initial admiration for the defender by making an approach once the summer window gets underway.
