Afghanistan's status as ICC Full Member unlikely to be affected

Despite dim prospects for an Afghanistan women’s team being formed so long as the Taliban remain in power, Afghanistan’s status as an ICC Full Member is unlikely to be affected. The matter is set for wider discussion at the next ICC board meetings in Dubai in March, when the ICC’s working group on Afghanistan will provide an update on progress in the country. ESPNcricinfo understands that the group, headed by the ICC’s deputy chair Imran Khwaja, will push for not penalising Afghanistan’s status and shed greater light on the difficulties the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) faces in pushing to develop the women’s game.Khwaja has met with ACB officials and government representatives in Doha twice in recent months, to get a clearer handle on the broader situation for cricket since the Taliban took over, as well as how women can be helped to play cricket. Those meetings are believed to have been “productive”, according to one official who attended.Related

Afghanistan Cricket Board urges patience with women's initiatives

At the second meeting, in February, the ACB assured the ICC’s working group that the board remains supportive of women’s cricket, but the political reality meant that an overt push for it could still prove dangerous for those involved.”Afghanistan is a delicate situation,” Ross McCollum, an ICC board member (Ireland) and member of the working group, told ESPNcricinfo. “The guys from ACB do want to see things happen with women’s cricket. But it’s not down to them, it’s down to the people in charge.”Forcing women to play cricket could lead to serious repercussions. We have to tread carefully, it will be a slow process. In December the Taliban banned secondary and higher education for females through the country, the latest manifestation of their repressive policies against women. The ICC working group was told, however, that there are differences in opinion within the Taliban about the role of women in society and that there exist exemptions which allow women to work in the medical sectors. That has not yet come through for any sports.Even before the Taliban takeover, little progress had been made on women’s cricket in the country. In October 2020, the ACB had held a national team trial camp and announced their intention to award 25 central contracts for women. Cultural sensitivities, officials pointed out at the time, were such that quicker, deeper progress was proving difficult and Afghanistan had been a Full Member for three years then. The working group has been told that the Taliban are not interfering otherwise in the running of the ACB. The government has apparently provided some funding to a board that had been hit hard after the Taliban took over, as international sanctions made it difficult to send money into the country.Changes to status for Full Members, in any case, are rare and none other than Zimbabwe have ever been suspended or had membership downgraded. But the fact that Afghanistan continues to be the only Full Member without a women’s team, or even a set-up in place – otherwise part of the ICC’s membership criteria – has been persistently highlighted in recent months.Australia cancelled an ODI series against Afghanistan in response to the education ban imposed on females•IDI via Getty Images

They were the only member to not have a presence at the pathbreaking U19 T20 Women’s World Cup in January and then at the T20 Women’s World Cup right after. That point was not lost on the ICC CEO, Geoff Allardice, who said ahead of the U19 tournament that it was concerning no progress had been made on the matter.FICA, the global players’ body, has also called the ban on women’s sport a “significant blow” and pointed out that Afghanistan is “in breach” of its Full Member requirements. But it did not call for a ban on Afghanistan, instead calling on the ICC to “embed its human rights responsibilities as a business in its governance and regulatory frameworks.”A number of Afghan women cricketers have also been very clear in calling for the ICC to play a more proactive role. According to ABC Radio’s , 22 of the 25 cricketers who were part of that original pool have left the country and resettled in Australia. Speaking on the show in January, several of the players asked why the ICC had not been in touch to offer support since they fled.”If we have the support of the ACB, the ICC, the people of Afghanistan and other countries that play cricket, then it is possible for us to keep playing,” one of the players, Firooza Afghan said on the show.”In Australia we have a lot of support – lots of equipment and facilities. But my question is, women have been playing cricket in Afghanistan since 2010 … why did the ICC not send anyone to check on us?”The players wrote to the ICC a couple of months ago, asking for ways in which the global body could help the women form a team. The ICC pointed out that constitutionally any such help would have to go through the member – the ACB – but intend to keep the dialogue open with the cricketers. And considerable thought has been given to the matter within ICC management as it stands, including the idea of funding a women’s team outside of Afghanistan, and one that runs outside of ACB approval. That only represents initial exploratory thinking on the subject and actioning it would require buy-in from the ICC board. On that platform, support and understanding for the ACB remains. At a recent Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, members reiterated their support. Pakistan, in fact, have agreed to play a three-match T20I series with Afghanistan, to fill the hole left by Australia’s cancellation of an ODI series.Cricket Australia is the only board to have publicly acted in response to the Taliban’s policies. They first postponed a one-off Test they were to host Afghanistan in – the first the two countries would have played – and more recently cancelled the ODI series, in response to the education ban imposed on females. Most other ICC Full Members have remained silent on the matter so far, though the majority still see the rise of Afghanistan’s men’s team as a fairytale that should be allowed to continue and grow, rather than be curtailed.”It needs to be discussed seriously (at board level),” McCollum said. “Each Full Member will have their own interpretation. I don’t think it’s a straightforward decision because it’s complex and there are ramifications.”

Brook in focus as SRH take on Royals in a bid to stay alive

Both teams are coming off four defeats in their last five matches and are in desperate need of a win

Tait: Brook should sit out and take a breather for a bit

Big picture: Brook in the spotlight
In the days leading up to December’s IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals’ think-tank assembled at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Kochi. After falling just short of the title in 2022, they retained the majority of their squad but had INR 13.2 crore left. During their meetings, they decided that they were prepared to spend almost all of that sum on one player: Harry Brook. They anticipated fierce competition. “If you look at the South Africa auction and the IPL one before that,” Jake Lush McCrum, their chief executive, said in one meeting shown in a two-part series on Royals’ YouTube channel, “Sunrisers had that one target and they didn’t want to risk anything to go for it, even though they had so much money… logically, they would go for him.”The series also shows footage of a conversation between Sanju Samson, Royals’ captain, and Giles Lindsay, their head of analytics. “So we are very much keen on having Brook with us? Where are we planning to bat him, No. 4?” Samson asks. “No, we’re thinking lower,” Lindsay responds. If they had been successful, Royals would likely have fielded a team featuring three overseas batters in Brook, Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer; instead, after taking the bidding up to INR 13 crore, Sunrisers got their man. “He’s a rare talent, and he’s going to do very well in the IPL,” Manoj Badale, Royals’ chief executive, said. “Let’s just hope he remembers that we bid him all the way up, so he doesn’t score too many against us.”As fate would have it, Brook made his IPL debut against Royals last month, making a scratchy 13 off 21 balls. He will come up against them once more on Sunday night – that is, if he keeps his place after a lean run of scores since his brilliant hundred against Kolkata Knight Riders three weeks ago. Both sides go into this game with four defeats in their last five games, and in desperate need of a win on Sunday night. Sunrisers are mathematically still in contention for the playoffs, but will realistically need to win every game; for Royals, three wins in four should be enough to qualify.2:34

Should Royals bring in Joe Root to sort their batting issues?

Team news: Will Zampa keep his spot?
Adam Zampa replaced Jason Holder as Royals’ fourth overseas player in their heavy home defeat to Gujarat Titans on Friday night, but his three wicketless overs cost 40 runs thanks to Hardik Pandya’s boundary blitz. Royals have confirmed that Obed McCoy is fit and available for selection, while they could also consider bringing Joe Root into their middle order. For Sunrisers, the main question is around Brook’s spot. They have invested heavily in him, and he is clearly a player of huge potential, but his recent form – and their position on the points table – makes Glenn Phillips a contender to replace him.Form guide

Cameron Green tuned up for the Test series against New Zealand with a century, while Cameron Bancroft also reached three figures to ensure Western Australia drew their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania. When Bancroft brought up his third Shield ton of the season, the Hobart match was called off early on Monday afternoon, with WA 242 for 2 in their second innings, having been set 450. Bancroft finished on 100 not out, while Green brought up his ton with a six and a three off successive balls, and was unbeaten on 103.They came together with WA 86 for 2 after losing opener Sam Whiteman and No. 3 Jayden Goodwin in quick succession. While it wasn’t quite a crisis, the visitors needed a solid partnership to stay out of trouble on the last day, and Bancroft and Green delivered. Bancroft anchored the visitors with his 205-ball innings, which featured 11 fours, while Green also hit 11 fours and a six in his 142-run knock. This was a timely innings for Green, who was lbw to debutant Kieran Elliott for 6 in the first innings, ahead of heading across to New Zealand. He played this round of Shield games to find some red-ball form as he looks to consolidate the No. 4 spot which he was recalled to against West Indies. It was his first first-class century since his maiden Test hundred in Ahmedabad last February, albeit that spans only nine matches.”He got a bit more flow into his batting the longer the innings went on, I thought,” Bancroft said of Green. “I’m sure he’ll be really pleased with that, and hopefully it’s something he can carry forward into New Zealand.”Tasmania remain top of the Shield table, and WA are third with two rounds remaining in the race for the final, which the top side will host.Caleb Jewell was named Player of the Match for his career-best 227 in Tasmania’s second innings.Bancroft, Cricket Australia’s domestic player of the year, leads the Shield scoring with 692 runs at an average of 57.66.Tasmania next host Victoria in a massive game, while WA are also at home from March 1 against second-last Queensland.

Injured Conway out of IPL, CSK add Richard Gleeson to squad

Devon Conway will not be available to CSK this IPL•BCCI

New Zealand and Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2024 with injury. CSK have added England fast bowler Richard Gleeson to their squad as his replacement.Conway had suffered a fracture in the joint of his left thumb during the second T20I against Australia in Auckland in February. He subsequently underwent surgery and CSK were originally hopeful of having Conway back in May for the second half of the IPL, but he has now been sidelined from the whole season.Conway was central to CSK winning the IPL title in 2023, scoring 672 runs in 15 innings at an average of 51.69 and strike rate of just under 140. Forty-seven of those runs came in a rain-hit three-day T20 final against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, where Conway also won the Player-of-the-Match award.Conway’s injury-enforced absence leaves Aravelly Avanish, the India Under-19 wicketkeeper, as the only back-up to MS Dhoni at CSK.

Gleeson’s addition, though, might help CSK fill the void that Mustafizur Rahman’s absence would create. The Bangladesh, left-arm seamer, who is currently CSK’s highest wicket-taker, with ten strikes, has been granted NOC by the BCB to play the IPL till May 1.Gleeson, 36, is a late bloomer, who made his first professional appearance aged 27 at Northamptonshire. He then emerged as Northamptonshire’s second-highest wicket-taker in the T20 Blast in 2016, with 14 strikes in ten games at an economy rate of under six.Gleeson made his international debut for England aged 34 in 2022, when he dismissed Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant within his first eight balls in a T20I at Edgbaston. He is set to call the ground home this summer.Gleeson hasn’t played in the IPL before but has had stints in the Hundred (Manchester Originals), BPL (Rangpur Riders), BBL (Melbourne Renegades), SA20 (Durban’s Super Giants), and ILT20 (Gulf Giants). In all, Gleeson has played 90 T20s so far, picking up 101 wickets at an economy rate of 8.18.

£60m Tottenham star "pushing" to leave as Levy cancels new contract talks

Tottenham Hotspur have shelved new contract talks with a star player in their squad, and he’s now seriously pursuing an exit from the north London club this summer, which could be seen as a concern for chairman Daniel Levy.

Postecoglou is now relying on an impressive Europa League run to convince Tottenham not to change managers, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, and Spurs are already expressing a serious interest in Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, among other high-profile alternatives like Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi and Fulham’s Marco Silva.

These next few weeks will be key in determining Postecoglou’s position at N17, and even if the 59-year-old does manage to make history in Europe and keep his job, the former Celtic boss is facing a very real prospect of losing key players this summer.

One of them, according to various reports in the last few days, could be star defender Cristian Romero.

The Argentine is wanted by Atlético Madrid, with South American media claiming that Diego Simeone has personally reached out to him (Uriel Lugt). Their arch rivals Real Madrid have also internally discussed a move for Romero, so it appears the 26-year-old has plenty of temptation away from N17.

Losing Romero would be a blow for Postecoglou and Levy, considering his status as a senior leader in the squad, and it now appears that the defender has fully made up his mind on quitting Spurs.

Cristian Romero "pushing" to leave Tottenham with contract talks cancelled

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Romero is “pushing” to leave Tottenham, and Levy has postponed talks over a new deal for the £165,000-per-week ace as a result.

The player has apparently made it clear to his circle that he’s ready to pursue a new challenge, and he’s set his sights on a move to La Liga specifically. Simeone really wants him at Atletico, as he views Romero as one of world football’s best centre-backs, but Levy won’t let him go cheaply.

The former Atalanta star’s price tag is set at around £60 million, and this could prove to be the main obstacle in place of an Atlético deal for the player. It is also worth noting that Romero is determined to leave regardless of whether Spurs win the Europa League and qualify for next season’s Champions League, so his eagerness to go may even force through a move.

One thing is certain – Tottenham would need to bring an adept replacement for the stalwart who’s been praised for his overall performances since joining in 2021.

“In Romero they have got a phenomenal defender. He makes others around him better,” said former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson to Football Insider three years ago.

“What they have got isn’t enough. They need more but he is certainly the best that they have got. He could play in any side in the top four of the Premier League. He is a Champions League player, a top player.

“If Spurs are going to go places Romero is the type of player they will need to keep and build around.”

Contact made: Wolves in talks with attacking 4-3-3 boss to replace Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly been in talks with a potential new manager to replace Vitor Pereira.

Wolves transfers ramp up with Old Gold on course to avoid relegation

The Old Gold have once again been involved in a Premier League relegation battle this season, however, following Pereira’s arrival in December, Wolves have pulled away from the bottom three.

Pereira replaced Gary O’Neil at Molineux and signed a deal until 2026 in the Midlands, and with another year in the top flight on the cards, those behind the scenes at Wolves are now working on potential signings.

High up on the to-do list could be to find a new striker to replace Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian, who recently penned a new deal with Wolves, is still wanted ahead of the summer and recently hinted he was ready to leave the club to fight for titles.

Asked for his response to Cunha’s comments this week, Pereira said: “He knows his potential as a top player and for me it’s normal that he has the ambition to fight for titles. For me, this is natural. It happens with other players at other clubs.

“The most important thing is to be committed to help the team to achieve our targets. This is the most important thing at this moment and at the end of the season we’ll see.”

In terms of attacking additions, Wolves are thought to be willing to pay more than £27m to sign Deportivo La Coruna winger Yeremay Hernandez.

Wolves are also eyeing a move to sign midfielder Sergi Altimira from Celta Vigo ahead of Manchester City, but in a surprise update, the Old Gold now appear to be looking at replacements for Pereira.

Wolves hold talks over move for Daniele De Rossi

According to reports from Italy, Wolves have held talks over a move to bring Daniele De Rossi to Molineux. It is claimed that contact was made through intermediaries as Wolves eye up a managerial change ahead of the 2025/26 season.

More than one discussion has been held between Wolves and De Rossi, who has been out of work since being sacked by AS Roma last September. De Rossi is thought to be open to a move to England and already has family connections in the country.

The 41-year-old has had two managerial jobs so far since retiring as a player, the first of which came with SPAL between October 2022 and February 2023.

Everton are not trundling but charging into the final stretch of the season, not threatened by relegation but thriving under David Moyes.

Change is afoot for the Toffees, and it’s not just the scenery that will be restyled. However, there are some players who are proving their worth, proving they can be key features over the coming years.

Jake O’Brien is very much one of them.

Jake O'Brien's emergence

Last season, O’Brien was called a “revelation in defence” for Lyon in Ligue 1 by European football expert Zach Lowy, but few of an Everton persuasion were revelling in his signing before Sean Dyche received the boot.

Indeed, the 6 foot 6 defender stood on the sidelines for the majority of his time on Merseyside before Moyes saw his worth and fashioned him into a makeshift wide man.

Now, he’s undroppable, very much starting to look like something of a revelation in the Premier League as he helps Everton toward their mid-table resurgence.

Everton's Jake O'Brien

Since continuing his dreary role as a bit-parter on Moyes’ (second) Everton debut against Aston Villa, a narrow defeat at Goodison Park, O’Brien has started invariably at right-back, something that seemed patchwork at the start but has become an increasingly comfortable and, in the best way, unnoticeable journey.

Well, largely unnoticeable, with the Irishman actually chipping in with two important goals during recent draws against Brentford and West Ham United.

The 23-year-old’s emergence has come at a cost to another, however, with Ashley Young’s services rendered… not useless, but certainly not worth renewing his current contract as he heads toward his 40th birthday.

Everton veteran is now finished

Young has been a stout presence at Goodison Park over the past few years, signing on as Dyche’s first arrival in July 2023 after his contract with Aston Villa expired.

Ashley Young looks dejected for Everton

However, the 39-year-old, who has entered the final few months of his current deal, has waned since Christmas, last starting in the Premier League during the home loss to Villa in January, a game that saw him make a direct error, cede possession 18 times despite only making one key pass and also win just one of three duels.

It’s safe to say he is not the “machine” that Antonio Conte once described him as during his stint at Inter.

The £40k-per-week veteran may not have any plans to retire just yet, but Everton run the risk of stagnating, should they not recognise the need to part ways with such ageing players at this reshaping moment. Especially, in Young’s case, since O’Brien has been in such fine form.

O’Brien excels in doing the basics well, yet to make a mistake in the Premier League while winning 54% of his duels and averaging 4.5 clearances per game, as per Sofascore.

These almost pragmatic patterns of play, carried with a central defender’s air but nuanced enough to bring his own brand to the full-back berth, suggest that Moyes may yet stick with his Irish star across the upcoming campaign, especially with Nathan Patterson there to provide support.

For Young, a somewhat sad ending given he has fallen into the darkness of the sidelines since Moyes’ return to the club, but it’s understandable that he should part ways at this watershed moment in Everton’s history.

Bramley Moore brings with it a new dawn, and O’Brien is proving himself worthy of a star spot.

Cost £4.3m, now worth less than Scales: Rodgers messed up with Celtic star

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been immensely successful throughout his time with the Scottish giants, in his second spell now with the club.

The Northern Irish boss won seven trophies in just over two-and-a-half years at Parkhead between 2016 and 2019 in his first go at it with the Hoops, before joining Premier League side Leicester City.

Celticmanager BrendanRodgerscelebrates with the trophy after winning the League Cup

Rodgers won two trophies in his first year back at Celtic last term, securing the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup, and is currently on course to land the domestic treble.

The Hoops beat Rangers on penalties to win the League Cup in the first half of the season, they are one game away from winning the league title, and they are in the SFA Cup final against Aberdeen.

This means that the former Leicester and Liverpool head coach could have won 12 trophies in his career with Celtic to date by the end of this season.

The Northern Irish tactician has clearly been hugely successful for the Scottish giants, but that does not mean he has been perfect throughout that time. In fact, there have been some question marks over his centre-back selections of late, with Liam Scales getting the nod at the weekend.

Celtic's centre-back debate

The Hoops started the 2024/25 campaign with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh as the two first-choice options in the right centre-back role and Auston Trusty and Liam Scales as the two first-choice options on the left side of the pairing.

Rodgers recently revealed that he prefers to play a left-footed player on the left side of the defence because it “allows you to get through the pitch quicker”, but he has had problems in that position this season.

Scales and Trusty have both dropped out of the team at times, with neither able to definitively say that they are the number one option, and thay may be because of the mistakes that they have made in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, they have both started a similar number of matches and have combined for five errors that led to shots, one error that led to a goal, and one penalty conceded. Trusty has also been dribbled past twice as much as the Irishman, as opposition forwards have found it too easy to get the better of him.

These statistics show that the two naturally left-footed defenders in the squad have not been particularly reliable at the back, because of the errors that they have made in the Premiership.

Scales started the 5-0 win over St. Johnstone in the SFA Cup and the 5-1 win over Kilmarnock in the Premiership, suggesting that he is currently ahead of Trusty in the pecking order.

That is despite Scales (£3m) being worth significantly less than Trusty (£6.4m), as per Transfermarkt, who joined the club from Sheffield United last summer.

The Irish defender’s value may have been higher, however, if he had more game time on the pitch because he has only started 17 times in the Premiership, which means that the centre-back has not had as many starts to showcase his quality as Trusty has had.

But Scales is not the only central defender who falls into that category. Rodgers has also messed up with Polish stopper Maik Nawrocki, whose value has plummeted during his time at Celtic.

Why Maik Nawrocki's value has plummeted at Celtic

The Hoops were in the market for a replacement for Carl Starfelt in the summer of 2023 and decided to splash a reported fee of £4.3m on the Legia Warsaw squad to bolster their options in that position.

That was a significant outlay, given it was the most expensive signing of the summer as per Transfermarkt, for Celtic and that suggests that they expected him to play a key role on the pitch.

That was not what happened, though, as Nawrocki went on to play just ten times, starting seven of those outings, in the Premiership during the 2023/24 campaign.

He won 57% of his duels and did not make a single error that led to a shot, goal, or penalty in those ten matches, but that was not enough to earn him a regular place in the team.

Carter-Vickers has nailed down the right-sided centre-back role and that has left Nawrocki fighting for a place on the left, which leaves him at an immediate disadvantage as a right-footer.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

He did not make a single appearance in the league until March of this season, when injuries to Trusty and Scales presented him with a chance to shine against Rangers and Hearts.

Nawrocki took his chance to impress in both of those matches, as you can see in the table below, by dominating opposition attackers in duels and being reliable in possession.

These performances from the £12k-per-week star were not enough to keep his place in the side, however, as he has been an unused substitute for the last two Premiership matches and did not make the matchday squad against St. Johnstone in the SFA Cup.

As a result of his lack of minutes on the pitch in the last two seasons, Nawrocki’s Transfermarkt value has plummeted millions down to just £1.7m, making him worth even less than Scales and Trusty.

This shows that Rodgers has messed up with the defender because Nawrocki was brought in for a whopping £4.3m and has rarely been used by the manager, despite his impressive performances, and the club now have a depreciating asset because of it.

It will now be interesting to see what Celtic do with Nawrocki in the summer because he is not worth anywhere near as much as the fee they paid for him due to Rodgers’ reluctance to use him, and he does not seem likely to be a key player moving forward due to his lack of minutes.

New target: Derby plotting move for "fantastic" record-breaking speedster

Derby County are now plotting a summer move for a record-breaking defender, whose contract is set to expire next month, according to a report.

Derby looking to kick on after final-day survival

After securing promotion back to the Championship in the 2023-24 campaign, Derby’s main aim last season was always likely to be avoiding the drop, and they just about managed to get the job done.

A goalless draw against Stoke City on the final day ensured the Rams will remain in the second tier for another season, with manager John Eustace taking the time to praise his players’ efforts after avoiding an instant return to League one.

“What a fantastic effort from everyone connected with the football club. The players have been outstanding every day in training they have dedicated themselves to getting to this moment and I couldn’t be any more proud of them.”

After securing their Championship status, however, Eustace’s side will be looking to kick on next season, and plans are being made for the summer, with the manager recently confirming he would like to sign loanee Nat Phillips on a permanent basis.

Alongside the centre-back, Derby could also look to make an addition at left-back, with a report from Football League World revealing they are now plotting a move for Charlton Athletic’s Thierry Small, whose contract is set to expire next month.

As such, Small could be available for a low fee, with compensation required seeing as the defender is just 20-years-old, although his current employers are still hopeful of keeping hold of him, should they secure promotion via the League One play-offs.

There is widespread interest in the youngster, with the Rams joined by Championship rivals Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers, Millwall and Oxford United in the race for his signature, having caught the eye in the third tier this season.

The 15 most expensive signings in EFL Championship history

The second tier has had its fair share of mega-money deals.

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 3, 2025 Small could be "fantastic" long-term signing

Back in 2021, the left-back broke Jose Baxter’s record by becoming Everton’s youngest-ever player, and while he didn’t manage to kick on by becoming a regular starter for the Blues, there are signs he could be capable of reaching the Premier League.

The full-back has been a vital player for promotion-chasing Charlton this season, making 39 appearances in League 1, and he has proven himself to be useful on the front foot, picking up two goals and three assists.

Not only that, but Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes the starlet has “bags of potential”, while manager Nathan Jones has described him as a “fantastic athlete”, perhaps in part due to his pace.

Small’s performances in the third tier this season indicate he could be more than capable of making the step-up to the Championship soon, so it is promising news that Derby are now plotting a summer move.

Xabi Alonso has now asked Real Madrid to sign £60m Tottenham star

As Xabi Alonso and his move to Real Madrid gains more traction, reports have emerged that the tactician is now eyeing a “world-class” Tottenham player for his potential new-look Whites side.

Tottenham looking at 'sell-to-buy' summer window

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou may not be in the dugout for much longer, with some outlets claiming that the 59-year-old could part company regardless of their success in the Europa League (The Telegraph).

The prospect of yet another new manager hunt from chairman Daniel Levy is seen as a realistic one, and Spurs must also figure out how to combat the next transfer window with fairly limited funds.

As per Matt Law, Tottenham may have to employ a ‘sell to buy’ transfer policy this summer, with Levy and the Lilywhites board set for a headache when it comes to attracting their desired targets.

Spurs could look to find a buyer for right-back Pedro Porro, as Djed Spence’s resurgence into a key first-team player hands Postecoglou or any new head coach a ready-made replacement for the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Richarlison is attracting interest from Brazilian clubs, as Tottenham consider offloading the striker following an injury-ridden campaign.

“Speculation has been that Palmeiras, Fluminense and Flamengo are preparing a proposal to buy the player in the middle of the year,” said South American journalist Jorge Nicola last month.

“The big news on this subject is that Tottenham, very bothered by the center forward’s series of injuries, are considering negotiating [selling] him permanently starting in July.”

Everton are also believed to hold a serious interest in Richarlison, according to GiveMeSport, and the prospect of him returning to Goodison Park is fairly realistic – so this could be one to watch as Levy seeks to balance the books and raise transfer funds.

However, the big name who appears more and more likely to depart N17 is star defender Cristian Romero.

The Argentine is a top target for Atlético Madrid, as per various reports, with Diego Simeone personally keen on tempting Romero with a switch to the Spanish top flight.

Xabi Alonso asks Real Madrid to sign Tottenham star Cristian Romero

Romero has reportedly informed Tottenham of his desire to leave this summer, and this has also piqued interest from Alonso, as the 43-year-old begins planning for the Real Madrid job.

That is according to reports in Spain, which state that Alonso has asked Real to consider signing Romero as part of a three-man centre-back shortlist, with the former Liverpool midfielder extremely keen to reinforce their backline.

Tottenham value the 27-year-old at around £60 million, so it won’t be a cheap operation for Florentino Perez, with Levy keen to make as much money as possible off the defender’s potential sale.

Romero formed an excellent partnership with Micky van de Ven during Postecoglou’s debut season in charge, but injuries have stopped him from making that same desired impact on a consistent enough basis this term.

Called “world-class” by van de Ven, the ex-Atalanta star could be even more tempted by a move to Spain if Real come forward with a proposal.
