Worcestershire have signed Nottinghamshire spinning allrounder Fateh Singh on a three-year deal after the 20-year-old impressed during a loan spell at the club over the summer. The slow left-arm spinner impressed at New Road during the One-Day Cup, taking 15 wickets at 24.13 – the second-most for the county, with a career-best 4 for 52 against Somerset. He went on to make his first-class debut at the end of the 2024 season for Northamptonshire during another stint on loan.A former England U19, Singh was part of the cohort that reached the final of the 2022 U19 ODI World Cup, though made just two appearances at the tournament. He was contracted to Nottinghamshire until the end of the 2025 season, having been a part of the county’s set-up since the age of nine. However, the club were happy to facilitate a move away from Trent Bridge for the good of his development. He made just 12 appearances for Nottinghamshire – all in the One-Day Cup – and had been usurped by 16-year-old off spinner Farhan Ahmed.Singh will get the opportunity to further his career at Worcestershire, who cemented their Division One status with an impressive sixth-place finish last season – their highest since the two-tier County Championship structure was introduced in 2000.”I’m absolutely thrilled to sign this contract and be back with Worcestershire long term, I had such a great experience with the Club last summer,” said Singh, in a statement released by Worcestershire on Wednesday.”Playing regularly and contributing with wickets as part of a young attack was very rewarding. I was made to feel so welcome, and I found a strong rhythm with the ball. With several players out injured, everyone stepped up, which was brilliant to see.”I’m excited to be back at a club known for nurturing young talent, and I hope to follow in the footsteps of players like Jake Libby, who has thrived since joining from Nottinghamshire.”I’m committed to continuing my development and aiming to make an impact.”Worcestershire chief executive Ashley Giles said: “We’re delighted to secure Fateh’s signing, which is a crucial step as we continue to build our squad.”Fateh demonstrated his potential last summer in the One Day Cup, and strengthening our spin department has been a priority.”We are putting together a team capable of competing at the highest level and building on last season’s successes.”The move reinforces Worcestershire’s spin stocks after they were rocked by the tragic passing of left-arm spinner Josh Baker at the start of the summer. The club opted not to secure the services of Amar Virdi following his release from Surrey despite the off-spinner undertaking two loan spells at the club.

£40m star drops Chelsea transfer hint on Instagram amid Xavi Simons talks

Chelsea are making a serious statement this summer in terms of both incomings and outgoings, with BlueCo sealing some very impressive deals so far and more expected to follow before the transfer deadline on September 1.

Chelsea now pushing to seal £100m double signing with talks ongoing

They’re actively pursuing both men.

2 ByEmilio Galantini Aug 5, 2025

To balance out their £277 million expenditure on transfers this summer, Chelsea are poised to bank well over £200 million in sales.

From a PSR standpoint, Enzo Maresca’s side appear to be comfortably sailing above the threshold of a £105 million loss over a rolling three-year period. Their £87.5m winnings from the Club World Cup and qualification for the Champions League, combined with player sales, means Chelsea have very few worries when it comes to PSR compliance, but it is a different story when it comes to UEFA’s FFP rules.

After being fined and charged with breaching FFP last month, Chelsea essentially have to balance out their incomings with outgoings, or risk not being able to register new signings for the Champions League next season.

This is why their player sales are absolutely crucial, and it is why we’ve seen a flurry of exits taking place in the last week.

The departures of Lesley Ugochukwu and Armando Broja to Burnley, combined with Kieran Dewsbury-Hall’s imminent Everton move, will help to make space for the potential signings of RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons and Man United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Alejandro Garnarcho for Manchester United.

Chelsea have been in talks to sign Simons for a while, and they’re apparently making progress alongside their ongoing talks for Garnacho as well.

United may have to sell Garnacho for just £40 million too, with the Red Devils forced to drastically reduce his asking price from £70 million amid their struggles to offload the Argentine.

Alejandro Garnacho makes subtle Chelsea transfer hint on Instagram

While Chelsea and Ruben Amorim’s side negotiate a deal, the player himself has made a subtle hint on Instagram that Stamford Bridge is his preferred destination.

As relayed by journalist Simon Phillips, Garnacho liked a post from Fabrizio Romano linking him with a move to Chelsea – so it appears the 21-year-old may in fact be pretty keen on joining Maresca in the coming weeks.

There is an argument to be made about the lack of professionalism on display here, and whether it could be a bad sign from Chelsea’s perspective about the winger’s attitude, especially after Garnacho’s Old Trafford fallout.

However, according to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, Chelsea have conducted extensive background checks into Garnacho’s character and are satisfied by what they’ve found. As the clock ticks towards deadline day, this is definitely one to watch.

Shades of Barkley: Big-money "magician" now "in agreement" to join Everton

A new era awaits Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this forthcoming Premier League campaign.

Thankfully, despite season after season of relegation panic, their swansong offering at Goodison Park wasn’t drenched in the worry of Championship football potentially coming to the Toffees’ new state-of-the-art home, as Everton finished in a comfortable 13th final spot under David Moyes.

Everton manager DavidMoyesreacts

Now, it’s up to the Scotsman to deliver more success to the blue half of Merseyside, with more signings presumably in the works to ensure they improve on their 13th position this time around.

Everton in talks to sign £300k p/w ace

Everton have been busy in the transfer department so far this summer.

Indeed, the Toffees have managed to welcome in five new faces ahead of their upcoming adventure into fresh surroundings, with both Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall sticking out as notable purchases up top and through the middle.

Dewsbury-Hall

While Dewsbury-Hall offers plenty of Premier League experience, the top-flight side might well venture down the more untested route when recruiting other midfield assets, with Sunderland’s 18-year-old gem Chris Rigg reportedly on their shopping list.

However, much in the same ilk as the former Chelsea man, Everton could also offer an escape route to another outcast struggling towards the top end of the Premier League, as talks continue to occur between the Toffees and Manchester City reserve star Jack Grealish.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Journalist Dominic King has taken to X to suggest that Grealish would be receptive to the idea of moving to Moyes’ outfit, with talks also ramping up – as per football journalist Mike Joyce writing for the Times – as Everton attempt to bring the £300k-per-week midfielder in on loan, despite those wild wage costs.

Further reports from one Toffees insider note that Grealish is “in agreement” to join Everton on loan.

How Grealish is shades of Barkley

The Birmingham-born 29-year-old won’t be viewed as a complete lost cause, with the idea of Grealish getting back to his prior best enabling Everton to win a temporary star who possesses shades of Ross Barkley’s game when he was at his peak at his boyhood club.

Before finding out the hard way how unforgiving football can be – with a limp 12 goals and 11 assists coming his way for Chelsea from a century of appearances – Barkley was a rip-roaring success story at his boyhood employers with runaway efforts like this one against Newcastle United.

In total, the 33-time England international would power home a respectable 27 efforts from 179 Toffees outings, on top of also picking up 25 assists, leading to one of his former Everton bosses in Roberto Martinez, heralding his overall ability as “incredible.”

Grealish would be showered with the same adoration when he was still pulling on Villa claret and blue, as seen in Brendan Rodgers branding him as “marvellous” to watch when situated in the Leicester City dug-out.

All this lavish praise was warranted, too, as the ex-Villans captain bettered Barkley’s Everton tally by amassing a bumper tally of 32 goals and 43 assists in the West Midlands, leading to the Citizens splashing out an excessive £100m on the attacking menace’s services.

Unfortunately for Grealish, this dive into the unknown at the Etihad backfired, leaving the 29-year-old now in a position where he needs to breathe life back into his faltering playing days, off the back of a 2024/25 campaign where a middle-of-the-road seven-goal contributions were averaged.

Often chucked out to the left wing under Guardiola, it could well be a masterstroke to come by Moyes if he places Grealish back into his preferred number ten spot, with that freedom perhaps reawakening his Villa best, gifting the much-loved Toffees boss his new Barkley in the process.

After all, Barkley managed to recover his career from the brink when he joined Luton Town in 2023.

The same could soon happen for Grealish, therefore, who was once even labelled as a “magician” when strutting his stuff for his hometown side by ex-Premier League regular Ashley Cole.

Manchester City's JackGrealishduring the warm up before the match

It will be up to Moyes and Co. to get this magic back out of him after an underwhelming stint in Manchester, with a version of Grealish back at his very best, an unbelievable weapon to possess.

Just imagine him & Ndiaye: Everton aiming to sign PL star alongside Dibling

As Everton chase Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, David Moyes also wants the Toffees to sign a “magic” Premier League winner who was once worth £100m.

Debutant Tinotenda Maposa's last-over heroics wins thriller for Zimbabwe

It was a low-scoring roller-coaster of a game to close out the T20I series, which Pakistan had already sealed

Danyal Rasool05-Dec-2024

Ryan Burl finished with figures of 3-0-15-1, including the wicket of Qasim Akram•Associated Press

On Tuesday, the Zimbabwean cricket team let Bulawayo’s exhilarating crowd down, but today, they picked them right back up. In a nerve-shredding encounter, Zimbabwe controlled, won, threw away and eventually stole a roller-coaster of a game off the penultimate delivery. A slap from Richard Ngarava that thudded into the stumps at the non-striker’s end, a hesitant jitter, and a scampered single was what it took to seal a two-wicket win that will feel much more significant than the mere consolation it will be recorded as in a 2-1 series defeat against Pakistan. In pursuit of 133 after a insipid batting performance from Pakistan, Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani appeared to have made this game routine when Zimbabwe blazed to 50 in five overs. But with a middle order as fragile as Zimbabwe’s no game is truly done, and even when the hosts sat pretty at 73 for 1 with more than half the overs the spare, Pakistan knew they were in with a shot, not least because of a Sufiyan Muqeem-shaped trump card who ran rampant through the middle overs once more. Within a five-over spell, 73 for 1 became 94 for 5, with Muqeem piling on the pressure as Abbas Afridi cleaned up from the other end. With four overs to go, the run rate was pushing 12.Pakistan believed Sikandar Raza stood between them and victory, and when Zimbabwe’s talisman miscued tamely to long-on off Jahandad Khan, the game looked as good as gone for Zimbabwe. Needing 12 off the final over with 21-year-old Tinotenda Maposa – on T20 debut – on strike, things appeared bleak. But a squirted boundary was followed up by a monstrous hoick over square leg for six that brought Zimbabwe to within two runs of victory. There was time for more drama when Tashinga Musekiwa went for a glory shot and miscued, but a Bulawayo crowd full of soulful singing was not to be denied this time.Tidy Zimbabwe leave Pakistan in a messStung by heavy criticism after an embarrassing collapse in the second T20I, Zimbabwe came out with a much greater intensity. Blessing Muzarabani had Omair Yousuf hole out for a duck, before Wellington Masakadza, who was accurate throughout, outwitted Sahibzada Farhan. A tentative little dab from Usman Khan off Muzarabani brought the third wicket, and Zimbabwe had the better of the powerplay by a distance.Qasim Akram made 20 off 15 to give Pakistan something to bowl at•Associated Press

Raza realized Pakistan were struggling against spin, and brought himself, Ryan Burl and Brian Bennett on at various stages through the middle overs. Pakistan were batting with a rather long tail, which necessitated a rebuild through the middle overs. Salman Agha struck up handy partnerships with Tayyab Tahir and Qasim Akram to keep the visitors ticking over, before useful cameos from Arafat Minhas and Abbas Afridi got Pakistan beyond three figures. It was only an untidy 13-run final over from Muzarabani that got Pakistan past 130 against a bowling attack that offered them very little throughout the innings. It was so very nearly enough.Bennett and Marumani scorch PakistanPakistan were defending a low total, and Zimbabwe’s openers essentially broke the back of it. The intent was clear when Bennett whipped Mohammad Hasnain to the square leg boundary off the first ball of the innings. Marumani, who has had the better of Jahandad for much of this series, whipped him through the offside for a pair of boundaries in the second over, and from thereon Zimbabwe were flying. But when Hasnain lined up for his second over, he was in for a flaying at Bennett’s hands. His line and length was all over the place and the batter was only too happy to take advantage with a pair of boundaries on each side of the wicket, plundering 19 off the errant over. Salman hastily brought himself into the attack, and Marumani insolently reverse swept him on the first-ball. It had taken them just 19 balls to get to 40, and the required rate was now under five.Muqeem’s magic nearly derails ZimbabweThere’s no better indicator of the start Muqeem has made in T20I cricket that Pakistan turned to him for a miracle when they needed wickets and a reining in of the run rate. No batter could truly pick out his wrong-un, and his figures of 4-1-19-1 did not do justice to the full breadth of his wizardry. There were multiple pokes that barely missed the outside edge, and a couple of top edges that might so easily have gone straight to slip. It culminated in a beguiling final over to Musekiwa, who desperately tried to see him off, willing to play out a maiden as the asking rate spiked after every ball.On any other day, Muqeem would have wrapped the game up before his spell ended, and on the evidence of this series, there will be many more such days.

T20 heavyweights look to draw first blood ahead of five-round bout

The two teams are in transition, but there’s plenty of firepower in both sides for what should be a high-scoring series

‘Gambhir will be judged on CT and England tour’

Big picture: Teams in transitionGautam Gambhir and Brendon McCullum have many things in common. They were both stellar openers, they were both captain and coach of Kolkata Knight Riders at different times, they’re both known for their “aggressive” mindsets when it comes to approaching the game from the dugout, and, now, they both find themselves trying to shepherd teams in transition.India’s has been easier, at least in this format, with three superstars calling time on their careers with T20 World Cup medals around their neck, and others fitting in smoothly over the course of wins against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa. England’s has been trickier, with one of the most exciting white-ball teams in world cricket struggling in ICC tournaments since their T20 World Cup win in 2022.This has meant McCullum enters the India T20I series as England’s white-ball coach for the first time, with ambitions of maximising the team’s unfulfilled potential. And for Gambhir, the aim is to show that the T20I team remains unaffected by the poor Test results that have shaken the establishment.Related

In the spotlight: Bethell and ShamiVery few youngsters right now have the aura of Jacob Bethell. He made blistering international debuts in all three formats at the back end of 2024. He has had a stint with Melbourne Renegades in the BBL, and has an IPL contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru without playing a single game in India. The left-hand batter has developed a reputation of smacking spinners for fun, is a handy left-arm spinner himself, and is considered an electric fielder in the ring and on the boundary line. Could there be a more perfect T20 cricketer in this era? Slotted in at No. 6 for the first T20I against India, Bethell’s stocks have never been higher. England see him as one of their future superstars. Now all he has to do is ace the India challenge. On the other hand, Mohammed Shami, at age 34, is making an international comeback after an ankle surgery and a knee niggle. He hasn’t played international cricket since India’s loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and despite India trying other fast bowlers in the interim, there’s a feeling that Shami remains India’s second-best seamer behind Jasprit Bumrah. India have gambled by selecting him for next month’s Champions Trophy, and the focus in the T20Is and ODIs against England will be on how his body holds up. It’s also the perfect way for him to come back, at his domestic-cricket home ground.Team news: Archer, Wood combine, but what of Bishnoi?England captain Jos Buttler said he was especially pleased at having every first-choice T20I player available for this series. They have named their XI already, with Phil Salt taking the gloves and Ben Duckett opening alongside him. Buttler himself will be at No. 3, with England also having the searing pace and fit bodies of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood to attack India. England’s deep line-up makes them one of the most dangerous batting outfits at the moment.England: 1 Phil Salt (wk), 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Jos Buttler (capt), 4 Harry Brook, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jacob Bethell, 7 Jamie Overton, 8 Gus Atkinson, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark WoodIndia have two major decisions to make: how many spinners to play, and how deep their batting should look. Arshdeep Singh, Shami and Hardik Pandya should be be the seamers, while Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel could be the two spin options. That probably leaves India deciding between seam-bowling allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, spin-bowling allrounder Washington Sundar, and an outright wristspinner in Ravi Bishnoi. England are right-hander-heavy, and struggle against fingerspinners, two factors that could decide India’s eventual choice.India (probable): 1 Sanju Samson (wk), 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Rinku Singh, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Nitish Kumar Reddy/Washington Sundar/Ravi Bishnoi, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Varun Chakravarthy.Brendon McCullum and Jos Buttler oversee England’s training session•Getty Images

Pitch and conditions: Dew and runs aplentyKolkata is going to offer a hard deck with true bounce. The boundaries are small, and the ball in January will get wet very quickly. That means Eden Gardens should be a paradise for batting. Suryakumar and Buttler both felt conditions would be the same irrespective of the toss result, so expect a belter with dew around.Stats and trivia: Arshdeep closes in on Chahal Among Full Members, England have the second-worst batting average against fingerspin since the start of 2024: 26.8. Against top sides like Australia, South Africa and India, it drops to 13.88 at a run rate of only 6.74. With 95 wickets in 60 T20Is, Arshdeep is only one wicket behind Yuzvendra Chahal, who leads the pack for India in the format. If Arshdeep gets to the landmark of 100 wickets in this five-match series, he’ll become the quickest fast bowler to get there. Currently, Haris Rauf holds that record, having achieved it in 71 games. Also, since Arshdeep’s T20I debut, no bowler has taken more wickets in the powerplay (40) or in the last five overs (46). India have not lost a bilateral T20I series at home in the last six years. Their last defeat was against Australia in February 2019. In the 16 series since, India have won 14 and drawn two. Since the T20 World Cup 2024, India have scored at 9.2 runs per over in the powerplay, an astonishing 10.3 from overs 7-15 and 10.9 in the last five overs. In this period, no team has had a better run rate between overs 7-15 or a better ball-per-boundary ratio (4.7). Archer has the wood over both Suryakumar and Hardik, with both batters striking at only 116 against him while averaging 14.5 and 19 runs, respectively.Quotes”It’s a really exciting tour coming to India with what I’d say is a full line-up for us. Sometimes there’s so much cricket that certain players have to be rested or managed. But that’s certainly not the case for us at all in in this series.”
“Eden Gardens is a special feeling, because this is where I played when I started playing regularly.”

Bad news for Ballard: Sunderland planning new bid for "unreal" £24m talent

Sunderland fans are living in a dreamland at the moment.

For so many years, the Black Cats had struggled to get back up to the Premier League, with a dire four-season stay in League One very much the Wearside outfit at their depressing worst.

Now, however, Sunderland look ready to compete with the very best in the Premier League, having spent a combined £141.5m on brand new signings this summer, with all that spending immediately paying off when the Black Cats brushed West Ham United aside on the opening day with ease in a 3-0 win.

It will be about following up that stunning victory with more and more wins, as plenty of new signings are also tipped to join Regis Le Bris’ camp before the transfer window closes.

Sunderland planning new £24m bid

12 new signings may well already be through the door on Wearside, but that number looks set to increase.

Le Bris and Co. could soon be splashing the cash even more by landing Brian Brobbey and Abdul Fatawu in quick succession, with the Ajax striker worth around the £17m mark, alongside his Leicester City counterpart’s steep valuation of £30m.

Of course, some speculative transfer talk – as we head very close to September’s early deadline – should be taken with a pinch of salt, but one rumour that kept floating about earlier in the window has come back into conversation again.

As per Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Sunderland are not giving up on acquiring the services of Bologna titan Jhon Lucumi to strengthen the centre-back department.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The site states that Sunderland is planning to lodge a new bid for the Colombian that should exceed the £24m mark, having seen their advances rejected by the Serie A outfit in the past.

If they were to finally pick up their desired centre-back target, this might well be bad news for Daniel Ballard moving forward, despite his colossal presence on the opening day against Graham Potter’s flimsy Hammers.

Why Lucumi could be bad news for Ballard

The above graphic just reinforces how stellar of an opening weekend Ballard had in the Premier League, with an imposing 16 duels won in total sticking out, away from his headed effort on the day, giving Le Bris’ men a two-goal cushion.

However, it will undoubtedly be difficult for Ballard to keep this up over a full season, which is his first ever campaign in the English top-flight, no less, when you assess his recurring injury difficulties on Wearside.

While he can boast seven goals from 90 appearances, alongside possessing a promotion up to the top-flight on his Black Cats CV, he has missed a worrying chunk of games across his three campaigns at the Stadium of Light due to injury, 65 clashes to be exact, as per Transfermarkt.

He has also shown he can struggle against Premier League opposition, away from all the glowing words surrounding his West Ham display, as the ex-Arsenal youth player inexplicably scored an own goal against Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear Derby last year to hand the Magpies a 3-0 success in the FA Cup.

Therefore, snapping up Lucumi might well be deemed a worthwhile venture to pursue at £24m, considering his Serie A expertise and his often injury-free status.

The Bologna number 26 has only been unavailable for 16 games due to injuries across his stay at the Serie A club to date, with his 2024/25 offering also seeing him pick up ten clean sheets and average an unerring 92% pass accuracy per top-flight outing.

On the contrary, Ballard – albeit from just 20 games owing to long absences out of the side – only collected a paltry two clean sheets in Championship action, with an 88% pass accuracy also paling in comparison to Lucumi’s numbers.

Jhon Lucumi for Bologna.

Heralded as being an “unreal” potential signing for Sunderland to make by journalist Ethan Todd, Lucumi does feel as if he would add significant depth to an area of the pitch that could be depleted if Ballard were to be out of action.

Even when the 25-year-old is fully at the races, the South American no doubt would keep him on his toes, as Le Bris attempts to get all his final signings over the line, just in time for September to roll around.
