Scott Kuggeleijn breaks record for fastest fifty in NZ first-class cricket

Northern Districts’ Scott Kuggeleijn has broken the record for the fastest (known) fifty, in terms of balls, in New Zealand first-class cricket with his 19-ball effort against Otago in the final round of the 2024-25 Plunket Shield in Dunedin. Former New Zealand allrounder Andre Adams had previously hit a 20-ball half-century for Auckland on his first-class debut against Otago back in 1997-98.Promoted to open the batting alongside captain Jeet Raval – this was the first time that Kuggeleijn was batting above No.4 in first-class cricket – Kuggeleijn led ND’s push for victory, and the Plunket Shield title, with 71 off 26 balls at a strike rate of 273.07.Kuggeleijn whipped the fourth ball he had faced from Matthew Bacon for six and in the seamer’s next over, Kuggeleijn hit full tilt, taking him for two sixes and as many fours. ND headed to lunch on the third day on 38 for 3 in three overs, with a lead of 304. Upon resumption, Kuggeleijn lined up left-arm fast bowler Andrew Hazeldine, swatting him for a brace of boundaries.Kuggeleijn then charged to a sub-20-ball fifty when he launched Hazeldine for another six in the sixth over. ND were 70 for 0 at that point, with Raval on 14 off 16 balls at the other end. This was Kuggeleijn’s second half-century in the game, having already scored an unbeaten 53 off 32 balls in ND’s first-innings 411 for 7 declared.Otago made the opening breakthrough when Jarrod McKay had Raval holing out. ND then bumped Neil Wagner, who was playing his last domestic fixture in New Zealand, up to No.3 and gave him the license to have a free hit. Wagner joined the fun, cracking three sixes during his unbeaten 27 off 11 balls.Kuggeleijn had looked good for his fifth first-class hundred until Toby Hart intervened. The debutant bounced Kuggeleijn out from round the wicket, but by then ND’s lead had already crossed 350.Wagner dragged it past 400 with his blows in the company of Bharat Popli, who made an unbeaten 21 off 13 balls. Otago used four bowlers with each of them having economy rates of ten or more.ND tightened the screws on Otago when they were reduced to 103 for 3; Otago were 120 at 3 at stumps on the third day in their pursuit of 407. In his last innings in New Zealand domestic cricket, Wagner had Dale Phillips, the brother of New Zealand international Glenn, caught in the cordon with a back-of-a-length delivery that reared up and left him in the channel.Raval then bowled both opener Jacob Cumming and No.3 Luke Georgeson with his part-time legspin. Fourteen of his 40 first-class wickets have come in the last two rounds of the Plunket Shield. Midway through the 37th over, Kuggeleijn pulled up with a potential injury, with Raval calling up part-timer Robert ‘Donnell to complete the over. Thanks to Kuggeleijn’s record-breaking knock with the ball, though, ND are still ahead in the race to the Plunket title.ND have a chance to send Wagner off with the Plunket title on Tuesday. Wagner, though, will continue to remain active as a player in county cricket in England, having re-signed with Durham.Ahead of the 2024-25 domestic season, Kuggeleijn had opted for a casual contract with ND to make himself available for franchise cricket outside of New Zealand. As a result, he missed the Super Smash, New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition, and instead turned out for Dubai Capitals in the UAE’s ILT20 and won the title with them. Prior to that, he represented Sudur Paschim Royals in the Nepal Premier League. After having completed his franchise commitments, Kuggeleijn linked up with ND for the one-day Ford Trophy and four-day Plunket Shield.

Suryakumar and Bumrah dazzle in MI's fifth straight win

Pant lasted only two balls amid a batting collapse from LSG that saw them slide from 110 for 3 to 161 all out

Rapid Fire: Can MI finish in top 2?

Mumbai Indians (MI) sealed their fifth consecutive win in comfortable fashion this season to climb to 12 points in ten games. It was a near-perfect day for the hosts in front of 19,000 kids as they defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the first time in a league-stage fixture.Half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav – who also became the third-fastest to 4000 IPL runs – helped them set 215 before Jasprit Bumrah’s four-for and Trent Boult’s three-for sealed a 54-run win.Mayank Yadav was back in LSG colours for the first time this season. His pace had dropped but his slower ones were effective and took 2 for 40 in his four overs. Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran got starts but LSG’s middle order, including an out-of-sorts Rishabh Pant, crumbled again. The chase fizzled out with the their last six wickets falling for 26 runs.Mayank strikes on returnThe day began with Mayank being announced as Shardul Thakur’s replacement. He took the new ball and bowled in the mid 130-kph to early 140-kph range. The bumper he tried in the first over got spongy bounce and went above Rickelton’s head. But an overpitched ball next up was thumped down the ground. In his next over, Mayank tested the middle of the pitch. Rohit Sharma hit two sixes with the pull, one in front of square and one behind. The response was a change in line, length and pace. It worked as Rohit reached out and sliced a slower length ball to short third.Rickelton takes MI off to a flierRickelton could’ve been run-out in the second over but Aiden Markram missed a direct hit from point. Rickelton showed his trust in the pitch as he slogged and pulled balls off a length. He drove a full toss down to take 15 off Prince Yadav’s first over. There were no other chances created in the 66-run powerplay.Digvesh Rathi came in having not conceded a single six in the powerplay, but Rickelton slog swept him twice for two sixes over midwicket before reaching a 25-ball fifty. Rathi changed ends and bowled quicker and straighter on return. Rickelton’s tried to capitalise on the googly when it was tossed up outside off, but ended up slicing straight to point in the ninth over. He made 58.2:18

Jaffer: Suryakumar more dangerous when he scores all around

SKY, finishers take LSG downMayank was brought back with Suryakumar new at the crease. That didn’t work as Suryakumar launched him over his head. Jacks then got a couple of boundaries behind square both sides of the wicket. The slower balls, though, did keep the batters down and MI moved to 105 for 2 in 10 overs.Prince’s reverse-swinging yorker then knocked Jacks over for 29. Suryakumar kept MI’s tempo going by hitting Bishnoi for a four and two sixes in the 13th over, but the 16-run over also saw the dismissal of Tilak Varma.Suryakumar brought up his 4000th run in the IPL with a ramp off Avesh Khan and got another six off Prince over fine leg again. At 157 for 5 in 15 overs, MI were ready to launch but Mayank set them back when he dislodged Hardik’s leg stump and gave away just five runs in the 16th over. Suryakumar was then dismissed for 54 off 28 balls, but MI kept finding the boundaries.Rathi’s off-day continued at the death as LSG continued with just five bowlers. The over started with an edged reverse sweep that went for four. It finished with 19 runs as Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch got under the ball and launched sixes over the leg side. MI soared past 200 with an over to go. Four full tosses from Avesh in the 20th over helped MI post 215.Marsh, Pooran start wellAiden Markram was able to slash Boult, who started from around the wicket, through the off side for a couple of fours. Marsh then launched a flick over square leg off Deepak Chahar that nearly went out of the ground.Bumrah was slightly lucky to get Markram as hi middled flick went straight into the hands of deep-backward square. Pooran got hold of Chahar in his third powerplay over, scything two wide yorkers for six before pulling a short ball for one more as LSG posted to 60 for 1 in six.Jacks does it againWith Mitchell Santner out due to a finger niggle and a left-hander on the tear, Jacks was brought on ahead of Karn Sharma and he struck twice. The first ball was lobbed up in the slot but Pooran mistimed a lofted drive to long-off, where Suryakumar took a good catch.Pant was back at No. 4 but endured another short stay at the crease. He edged a cut for four through third before miscuing a premeditated reverse sweep to Karn at short third. The wicket led to the two overs following the powerplay going for just 13 runs.Trent Boult got two wickets in the middle overs•Associated Press

Boult and co. keep set batters in checkAyush Badoni got off to a watchful start. He was on seven off seven balls before making room and and slashing Karn for two fours and a six. Marsh hit two fours off Hardik Pandya’s sole over but slowed down from 31 off 17 to 34 off 24. Hardik rang in the changes as five different bowlers were used between the eighth and 13th overs. The asking rate rose close to 12 when Boult, on return, got Marsh with a slower ball and reduce LSG to 110 for 4. Badoni and David Miller continued the trend of the earlier partnership with Miller, the new batter, getting off to a quick start (21 off 13) while the set batter slowed down.Badoni got away with an undetected edge in the 14th over but fell to a slower ball from Boult to end with 35 off 22 after being 30 off 15.Bumrah brings the chase crashing downBumrah returned with LSG needing 76 off 30 balls and got three wickets, starting with Miller’s. Bumrah followed Miller with a low full toss that was flicked to Bosch at deep midwicket. A dipping slower yorker had Abdul Samad early into the shot and knocked middle stump back. A pace-on yorker smashed Avesh’s off stump. At 142 for 8, the game was effectively done.Bishnoi was able to launch a couple of sixes, the second of which was off Bumrah and brought out smiles and fist-pumps, but Bosch and Boult cleaned up the tail and completed MI’s 150th IPL win comprehensively.

Vamos entrar no 220 – ponderou.

Devemos pensar jogo a jogo.

Wolves star Munetsi reveals what they "really" worked on in training before Everton win

Midfielder Marshall Munetsi has urged Wolves to take their Carabao Cup form into the Premier League following a third-round win over Everton.

The 29-year-old opened the scoring before Tolu Arokodare made sure of victory three minutes from time to earn Vitor Pereira’s side a second win over top-flight opposition in the competition.

It has been a different story in the league, though, with Wolves having lost their opening five matches to sit rooted to the foot of the table.

Munetsi calls for Wolves to carry form into Spurs clash

Munetsi said the win over Everton was a confidence boost and wants Wolves to use it to inspire an upturn in their league form, starting against Tottenham on Saturday.

He told the club website: “It’s an amazing feeling. It’s something we have been really pushing for.

Wolves ready to pay record release clause to sign "creative" star in show of Pereira faith

The Old Gold may look to part ways with a sizeable fee to shore up their attack.

BySean Markus Clifford Sep 22, 2025

“Obviously, in the league things haven’t been going well for us, but I think (against Everton) the coach wanted us to really work on our physique, to try to dominate the game.

“We also have a big game coming up on Saturday that we need to really maximise. We need to build from this and try to work our way up the ladder in the league.

“It also builds up the confidence in the group. We have to build on this.

“We know it’s not going to be an easy game, but with the way we did (against Everton), I think it’s going to be massive for us to take maximum points there.”

Defeat for Everton left them on a run with three games without victory. James Garner came close to equalising on a couple of occasions, hitting the crossbar and having a long-range effort saved by Sam Johnstone.

He told the Everton website: “We just weren’t at the races. I think when we brought the subs on we were a much better team and we looked like we could maybe go on and get something out of the game.

“But then, obviously, the second goal goes in and then the game’s kind of closed from there. But, yes, I know we need to do better.”

João Paulo, do Santos, reclama do gramado do novo estádio do Atlético-MG: 'Horrível'

Rizvi special helps DC sign off with a win

Punjab Kings saw their hopes for a top-two finish dented

Himanshu Agrawal24-May-20251:54

Kumble: Karun-Rizvi stand the turning point

Only twice in 22 attempts before Saturday night had Delhi Capitals (DC) successfully chased down a total of 200 or more. By hunting down 207 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Jaipur, they not only saw a 21-year-old Sameer Rizvi hit his maiden IPL fifty in a winning cause but also dented PBKS’ hopes of a top-two finish this season. The defeat still leaves PBKS at No. 2 on the points table, but with every chance of them finishing third and thus having to play the Eliminator if results in the upcoming matches don’t go their way.Rizvi attacks them allDC required 91 runs to win from the last 46 balls – a required rate of nearly 12 runs an over. From then onwards, Rizvi went after all kinds of bowling PBKS threw at him – and at crunch moments. From three off four balls at that stage, he got a top-edged four off a tennis-batted swat off right-arm seamer Azmatullah Omarzai. Next ball, he went low to scoop a short ball after spotting that the fine leg fielder was brought in. The tone was set, and Rizvi kept playing his shots fearlessly.Facing the left-arm pace of Marco Jansen, Rizvi pulled him for six to end the 14th over. That shot kept DC afloat in the chase. But with the required rate once again heading towards two runs per ball, Rizvi swung left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar for a massive six over midwicket. Some luck went Rizvi’s way when an inswinging attempted yorker from Omarzai resulted in an inside-edged four in the 18th over, but he deserved it.Rizvi even heaved Arshdeep Singh for six, and finished the chase with a sweep off Marcus Stoinis, with the ball nearly gone out of the ground. His unbeaten 58* off 25 balls was his highest IPL score.Nair lays the foundationKarun Nair celebrated his recall into India’s Test side after eight years by stylishly swiping Jansen for six first ball. But he only ticked along to 11 off nine balls, until he went 4, 4, 4, 4 off legspinner Praveen Dubey in the 11th over. There was the slog sweep through square leg, the sweep behind square, the pull through midwicket, and the sweep past short fine leg. That run of boundaries got Nair going, and he launched Jansen for six over mid-off in the 14th over, and late cut Brar for four in the 15th. Nair’s stay ended when he got too across to the left-arm spinner, and saw his leg stump uprooted for 44 of 27 balls to end the over. But with Rizvi set, Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma to come, and the requirement down to 52 off 30 balls, the foundation for DC’s win had been laid.3:09

Should PBKS be concerned about their bowling?

Shreyas fifty guides PBKSPBKS were 60 for 2 after the powerplay, with the loss of wickets not preventing them from going after the bowling. The sixth over, bowled by Vipraj Nigam, went for 16 runs, with Shreyas Iyer getting off the mark with a boundary through cover. The score was 77 for 3 after eight overs – both Prabhsimran Singh and Josh Inglis fell after cameos – but Shreyas kept PBKS going. When Kuldeep Yadav floated it outside off, Shreyas twice heaved him for a six. When the length was there from Mohit Sharma to drive, he went over cover. When the length was too short, like from Mukesh Kumar, or too full, like from Vipraj Nigam, Shreyas capitalised with boundaries. He got to his fifty off 33 balls by clipping Mukesh for four to end a 25-run 17th over, but had plenty of support in the death overs.Stoinis pummels DCTwenty-six balls were left in PBKS’ innings when Stoinis arrived to bat at No. 7. He faced 16 of those, and crashed 44* with three fours and four sixes. Two leg-side sixes and a drilled drive for four to beat Faf du Plessis at long-off came off Mukesh in the 17th over. Kuldeep threatened to slow PBKS down with two wickets in the 18th, but Stoinis remained unmoved. He went after Mohit Sharma in the penultimate over of the innings. Mohit had dropped Stoinis when on 18, and paid the price for it. Stoinis went 6, 4, 4, 6 off four of the first five legal balls of the 19th over: a pull over midwicket, a flick to deep square leg, another pull to deep square, and a loft over long-off.With three balls left, Brar flung Mustafizur Rahman for six over midwicket and took PBKS past 200, their seventh such score this season. But that didn’t prove to be enough, with PBKS still left fighting to play Qualifier 1.

Moises Caicedo tells Chelsea fans where he ranks himself compared to Kante

Chelsea toppled Liverpool last weekend and Moises Caicedo was the star of the show, and he has since responded to comparisons between himself and Stamford Bridge icon N’Golo Kante.

Caicedo's excellent form continues in Chelsea's win over Liverpool

West London was home to some fantastic scenes last Saturday night as Enzo Maresca claimed a sizeable victory over Liverpool to alleviate pressure on his shoulders after a run of three Premier League matches without a win.

Estevao took the plaudits after his last-gasp winner to settle the scoring. However, there was no doubt that Moises Caicedo was the best player on the pitch against the reigning champions.

Not only did the Ecuador international deliver a stunning strike to open the scoring. His all-action display and 11 defensive contributions, per Fotmob, earned him serious praise from fans and pundits alike on a day where Chelsea moved seventh in the top-flight standings.

Speaking about his wonderstrike, Glenn Hoddle couldn’t help but wax lyrical at the former Brighton & Hove Albion man’s ‘absolutely sensational’ technique and execution.

He said: “Absolutely sensational from Caicedo. That first touch is excellent, takes [Alexis] Mac Allister out of the game, he goes to hit it, sees there’s no Liverpool player coming towards him, and what a strike to keep it in that top corner. Wonderful goal.”

Continuing his impressive start to the campaign, Caicedo has hit the goal trail for Chelsea with three strikes in his first nine encounters across all competitions, becoming the Blues’ joint-top scorer in the top-flight.

Ranking as the West Londoners’ most expensive ever signing at £115 million, there has always been a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders, but how does he feel about comparisons between himself and Stamford Bridge great N’Golo Kante? It’s time to find out.

Is Moises Caicedo better than N'Golo Kante?

Speaking in a recent interview, Caicedo admitted that he still has a long way to go to match Chelsea icons Kante and Claude Makelele, claiming that he is only striving to improve his game week by week.

Chelsea prepare £78m bid for "special" forward whose value is skyrocketing

The Blues are eyeing a free-scoring star and could go big to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

BySean Markus Clifford Oct 6, 2025

Undoubtedly, Chelsea have a rich history of midfield talent and Caicedo is another who has regularly gained rave reviews from supporters, who will make their own minds up on comparisons between some of their finest recent players.

Either way, he is certainly someone who is pulling all aspects of his game together at the right moment for Maresca, and supporters will expect plenty more where that came from as the Blues look to find the Champions League slots.
