Texas Super Kings’ (TSK) South Africans came to the fore as they thumped MI New York (MINY) by 39 runs to qualify for the knockout stage of MLC 2025. Faf du Plessis led the charge with his second century of the season and Donovan Ferreira provided the firepower at the back end of the innings with a 20-ball 53 to take TSK to 223 for 4. Akeal Hosein then starred with the ball to restrict MINY to 184 for 9 as TSK stayed within two points of the top two teams, with Kieron Pollard’s 39-ball 70 going in vain.TSK did not get off to a good start as George Linde trapped Smit Patel in front with just three runs on the board. Du Plessis – who scored 11 runs off 12 balls after reaching his fifty – helped swing the momentum, with two more sixes off Linde’s final over. Marcus Stoinis then fell to Ugarkar as MINY looked to slow TSK down, but du Plessis and Ferreira had other ideas.Du Plessis pulled Pollard for a six over midwicket before Ferreira drove him for a couple of fours. Du Plessis then picked up a boundary off Boult to set up a thrilling last three overs that saw TSK rack up 56 runs.Ferreira tore into Adil for 20 runs off the 18th over before du Plessis reached his century with a swivel-pull off Boult, even as the penultimate over only cost eight runs. MINY had a tentative start to the chase and soon Nandre Burger picked up the big early wicket of Nicholas Pooran, who opened the innings. Hosein then bowled a wicket-maiden in the powerplay to put MINY under further pressure. He then dismissed de Kock and Tajinder Singh in consecutive overs to complete a masterful spell and leave MINY on 75 for 4 in the 11th over.The late assault from Pollard came a little too late, even as he thrashed Noor Ahmad for three consecutive sixes in the 14th over, followed by a boundary thanks to Mukkamalla letting the ball slip out of his hands and over the rope after he collected it at long-off and was trying to throw it back to the middle.The next three overs brought 37 runs, but a brilliant effort from Ferreira at long-off broke the 88-run stand.By the time Burger cleaned up Pollard in the penultimate over, the chase was already out of MINY’s hands.

Just five days after the transfer window slammed shut the shock news emerged from Tottenham Hotspur that Daniel Levy would be leaving the club.

It’s the end of an era and whatever you say about the former chairman’s stint at Spurs, he did deliver success. Under his watch, a remarkably impressive new stadium was built, they reached a Champions League final and won the Europa League. Not bad, really, eh?

Sadly, the Lilywhites have largely always been the bridesmaid rather than the bride. They’ve failed to soar to the next level but under Thomas Frank they will hope things change.

Perhaps a big £100m investment could help? Last week, it was announced that ENIC, which, before this transaction, owned nearly 86.91% of Spurs, have provided £100m in new funding to Spurs. The sum has been provided to ENIC via the Lewis family trust which did own 70% of ENIC and 61% of Spurs.

Essentially, ENIC have provided the cash in exchange for shares, increasing its ownership stake in the club, increasing its percentage in Tottenham Hotspur to 87.62%.

The Athletic understand that the £100m may not be added to a transfer war chest, but extra investment can’t he a hindrance. Perhaps there will be some extra room for manoeuvre in the transfer window anyway.

Since heading to Germany, he has taken his game to a whole new level and is now in the conversation to win the Ballon d’Or next year, currently ranking as the fourth favourite to take home the award.

Why? Well, the England skipper has been in remarkable form during 2025/26. He has scored a mind-boggling 18 goals in just ten fixtures, cementing himself as the most prolific forward on the planet.

Despite that, there is a hope that one day he will return to Spurs. Reports in recent months have suggested that they were ready to launch a bid to re-sign their former striker if given encouragement by the player.

Kane’s currrent deal in Germany ends in 2027 and there is a release clause of £56.7m that could reportedly be activated next summer.

Sadly for Spurs supporters, the player could look to extend his terms. Speaking to the press last week, the centre forward commented: “In terms of staying longer I could definitely see that. I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet but if they were to arise I would be willing to talk and have an honest conversation.”

It’s safe to say Frank could certainly do with Kane. While the former Brentford boss has made Spurs look like a more organised and defensively sound outfit, they are struggling to score goals.

Four players hold the honour of being the club’s top scorer this term, with Joao Palhinha, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Micky van de Ven all level on three. That rather says it all, really.

That being said, by the time Kane’s deal at Bayern ends, he will be 34. Younger legs will be required.

The Harry Kane alternative Spurs must sign

Bringing back their record scorer to the club would be an incredible way for ENIC to begin the post-Levy era but it’s perhaps not the smartest use of their funds.

A striker will likely be signed within the next year but they must not neglect the flanks either. That’s where Bournemouth talisman, Antoine Semenyo, comes in.

Far-fetched? Quite possibly, but reports emerged last week indicating that Spurs were preparing a move to sign the winger in January, with Frank allegedly making it clear that he is “the perfect fit” for his team.

Few would find a reason not to sign Semenyo in 2026. Erling Haaland aside, he has been the best player in the Premier League this season, scoring six goals and registering three assists in his seven outings to date.

The wide forward has taken his game to a whole new level. In 2024/25, he exited the campaign having scored 13, 11 of which came in the league. He’s currently on course to obliterate that record, rubberstamping precisely why every top side in the division, Spurs included, should be looking to sign him next year.

In the words of former Spurs and England star, Chris Waddle, Semenyo is now “definitely the best winger in England right now”.

Predominantly preferred off the right flank, Mohammed Kudus may not be too pleased about this signing but the summer arrival has the skillset to play off the left and through the middle too.

One has to say; the thought of Kudus, Spurs’ “player of the season” in the words of reporter Alasdair Gold, linking up with Semenyo is a scary thought indeed.

It would, of course, be scary to see him linking up with Kane but that feels like a pipe dream right now. Semenyo is certainly more realistic and he could use Kudus’ marvellous creativity to take him to even greater heights.

Both representing Ghana at international level, there is a pre-existing relationship there both on and off the field.

Kane is every supporter’s dream but Semenyo would be an incredible signing. There is a reason both Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly interested in his services.

It’s a rotten case of de ja vu for Man United, but the reality is that one of their struggling players is once again thriving at Napoli.

Last season, it was Scott McTominay, who even earned himself a Ballon d’Or nomination, and this time around it’s Rasmus Hojlund, who’s found his golden touch away from Manchester.

The Dane has been in electric form since joining Napoli, whilst United’s big-money signing Benjamin Sesko is only gradually beginning to find his feet after scoring two goals in his last two games.

Although Hojlund’s sudden burst of form may look frustrating from afar, United should be more than happy with Sesko’s start. Napoli, meanwhile, don’t look likely to go away anytime soon. Reports are now suggesting that the Italian giants are already working on a 2026 deal to sign another Man United star.

Napoli already working on Mainoo deal

According to Italian journalist Emanuele Cammaroto, Napoli are already working on signing Mainoo in the January transfer window and are waiting to see if the midfielder is available to complete a loan move.

“The strong temptation is to sign Mainoo,” the reporter told Napolimagazine live on Radio Punto Zero, via Area Napoli.

“But there we need to understand whether United are open to a loan with an option to buy. The parties are working on it.”

The Carrington graduate was very open about his desire to leave on loan in the summer, only for Amorim to deny him that chance and instead tell him to fight for his place. Since then, though, Mainoo has not started a single Premier League game.

Previously dubbed “special” by Paul Scholes, the 20-year-old will be desperate for the game time that Napoli could offer him. He, like everyone else, would have noticed their impact on Hojlund and McTominay and may want to follow suit in the new year.

That said, former Man United scout Mick Brown still has faith that Mainoo is being readied to replace Bruno Fernandes if he leaves for Saudi Arabia in the near future.

He told Football Insider: “It seems to me like Mainoo is being lined up as the perfect choice to step into his place, because the manager has been clear that he sees them as competition for the same role.”

New Zealand’s most successful national coach, Gary Stead, will bow of the role at the end of the month after a seven-year tenure that included a World Test Championship (WTC) title, three global limited-overs final appearances, and a historic 3-0 Test series win in India.Stead, 53, had already stood down from the white-ball role and was given some time to consider his future with the Test side, but New Zealand Cricket (NZC) appear set to appoint one coach for all formats with Stead standing down when his contract finishes at the end of the month.He has left a huge imprint on New Zealand cricket after taking the role from Mike Hesson in 2018. Stead coached New Zealand to the ODI World Cup final in 2019 where they lost on a heartbreaking boundary countback. Yes, it’s certainly the case that the Swedish international’s presence on the pitch has at times helped to create space for others, but what he is ultimately in the team to do is score goals, and he hasn’t done that anywhere near enough this season.

For example, in 11 games across all competitions, the 27-year-old has scored just three goals, all three of which have come in the league, two against Leeds United and one against Nottingham Forest.

Simply put, with him not doing his primary job to the standard expected of him, it makes sense to see him dropped for the game against Atlético.

However, a possible reason why he is struggling in front of goal could be the fact he’s been thrown into the deep end by Kai Havertz’s injury and is currently in need of a proper rest.

Doing this would not only take some of the heat off him, but it might also allow him to come back into the side firing for the home game against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Finally, the unfortunate reality is that Arteta does not have many options to play up top at the moment, so it might make sense to rest the former Sporting CP star to protect the makeup of the squad.

Fortunately, while the options to replace Gyokeres in the team are limited, they aren’t nonexistent.

The Arsenal star who should replace Gyokeres

While there isn’t an out-and-out striker to start ahead of Gyokeres, there are a few Arsenal players who could do a job up-top, like Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli.

However, after the last year of football, there is, of course, only one player Arteta should be considering to replace the Swede: Mikel Merino.

The Spanish international may be a central midfielder by trade, but he has been incredibly prolific for club and country in 2025, and as things stand, remains the Gunners’ top scorer for the calander year.

For example, he ended last season with a tally of nine goals and five assists in 44 games, but eight of those goals and all five assists came in the new-year.

So far this season he only has one goal to his name, but it was a hugely important one away to Newcastle United.

As if that wasn’t enough, the 29-year-old monster, who Arsenal writer Adam Keys has dubbed “a magnet in the box,” has also found the back of the net eight times on international duty this year and provided one assist for good measure.

Moreover, he actually scored a hat-trick against Turkey in September, so there really cannot be any doubt over his outrageous goalscoring abilities anymore.

Ultimately, Merino is not going to become Arsenal’s starting striker, but with Gyokeres out of form, and likely in need of a rest, he could be the perfect solution for the game against Atlético.
